After another unsuccessful 'sunbathing' day in Ko Samui we were hoping to find better weather on the West coast of Thailand.......FAIL! We arrived in Ao Nang in an almighty downpour and were taken to the Mild Bungalows where we sought shelter before catching the most amazing punked up tricycle tuk-tuk into the town. We had dinner and failed to find any kind of nightlife but we did however spot our first monkey! Day 2 in Ao Nang and we were meant to be heading to James Bond Island, but a knock on our door at 7.50am informed us that unfortunately the boat would not be leaving due to a 'big big storm'. great. Another lie-in was therefore granted and we then decided to attend Thai Cooking School instead as this was rain friendly!! Having cooked a ... read more

This was most certainly a family holiday....grandma was coming along...the Midgit was nearing 3 years old...and i was 7 months pregnant. What a perfect time for a south east asian holiday :) I pretty much organised the holiday due to flghts and trying to get decent times and direct flights. So off we went from Perth direct to Patong on Virgin. We've had this with Virgin before and they do have most of everything for sale...but if they price is only a little different to Thai airways then just go Thai as they are full service and it cost me over $100 in food for 4 people over 6 hours!!!! We stayed at the Holiday Inn in the Busokorn Wing which was very very nice. It is brand new and has beautiful little balconies facing out ... read more

It was time to leave Phi Phi for Ao Nang. We packed our stuff and headed for the boat which took us to Krabi Port. We took a bus into Krabi town which dropped us off at some random guest house and we were off to find a way to Ao Nang. We were about to head to the main bus station, which was about a 7 km walk, when some random Aussie woman on a scooter informed us of where we needed to go to catch a ride to Ao Nang. We automatically trusted her because she didn’t seem local. The cheapest and most efficient way of getting to Ao Nang from where we were was to take a Songthaew(a pick-up truck with benches on either side of the box) for 50 Baht each. Sounded ... read more

Let me get this off the bat straight away. I very rarely disagree with the Lonely Planet, but I do have a very different view point about Ao Nang than they do. I think they have been a bit harsh on the town in their publication. To state that it is very touristy and sells alot of cheap holiday trinkets may be true, but where in Thailaind isn't that the case? And I do get their point about McDonalds etc being a major tourist point is a concern, however it does have some nice beaches nearby and the views of the limestone mountains are absolutely breath taking. So me not seeing eye to eye with the Lonely Planet Thailand guide gets a CF of 2. We stayed at the Somkiet Buri Resort and it was absolutely ... read more

It seems whenever I’m writing our blog it means there’s not a lot else to do, either we’re on a bus or train going somewhere far away, or in our room for one reason or another. This time it’s the latter and the reason; well the term “it's raining cats and dogs” does not really do the weather justice, I would possibly go for the term “someone up there has been holding it in for a long time!" Oh yeah by the way were on now phi phi island, landed via ferry yesterday (Wednesday) it’s now 11.20am and the rain started at around two o’clock this morning. The funny thing is (not ha ha funny) according to the internet, this is light rain! So we’re in our hotel, the imaginatively named Phi Phi inn, room bound ... read more

A few weeks ago we were planning a last trip in the caravan in June before putting it on the market to sell when we had a call from our very good friend Jeanette in England. Her daughter Victoria was doing a back packer trip through Asia and Australia and had invited them to join them for a tour through Thailand. Jeanette wondered if we would like to fly in and join them for some of the time. Stuart has not done any substantial flying since we left the UK but armed with his “new legs” we thought that we would give it a go. The political situation in Thailand was volatile so we took advice and found that if we flew through Bangkok airport but did not stay in Bangkok we should be ok. So ... read more

I never thought I would have so much fun in Krabi, let alone feeling as heavy hearted when it was time to say 'Good Bye'. We arrived at Krabi on 27 May. Didn't planned out any activities, and definitely had no expectation whatsoever. The first day was spent stuffing ourselves silly at the street vendors. And countless rounds of shopping at the nearby 7-eleven. Which I have to admit, the 7-eleven in Thailand never cease to amaze me - Well what can I say, Junk food IS the love of my life! And 7-eleven in Thailand is indeed a junkfood haven! The next day was spent wandering and shopping around Ao Nang town. It was low season and there was only a handful of tourist spotted. And lucky for us we managed to get better discounts. ... read more

Ao Nang - We spent about 1 week in Ao nang and spent the whole time pretty much going out, relaxing and being hungover... thats definately what the pics look like too!! However we did actually go snorkeling and kayaking too! all of the pictures from that are on a waterproof camera though, so unfortunately we cant upload them!! Anyways, i think we've already mentioned snorkeling, but kayaking was really cool. We went through the mangroves and canyons, 2 to a boat! Malve and Megan had it easy though, they both had instructors paddling with them, whereas me and Han had to slog it out on our own - by the end we were just drifting in rather than actually paddling anywhere! Monkeys swam in the mangroves, and when we got close jumped on the boat ... read more

Saturday, 27th February 2010 My quest for "adventure" continued in Krabi this morning. I had a confession to make though. My "adventure" was nothing quite like rock climbing, scuba diving and kayaking activities which the Krabi locality was well known for. Instead, armed myself with a chopping board, I proceeded to the Ao Nang Thai Cookery School for a crash course in Thai Cuisine this morning. The price tag itself was never cheap as the school fees was at a touristy price of 1,000 baht. This was the kind of prices we were expecting to pay after my market research. Without much foundation in cooking in general (mum would never like me to invade her territory at home), learning how to whip up 5 Thai dishes at one go was itself an "adventure" for me. Surprisingly, ... read more
