I realise that 2 out of the three headline words could be titles for the most recent panorama production but don't get excited. All I am discussing here is elephants. Traveling alone can make for some very strange feelings and none more so than trying to decide what to do,or where to go. Days out normally involve discussions with friends or family... Here, the closest I have to a friend is the Russian lady who was having problems with judicial happenings and tits. So, when it came to wanting to spend a day with elephants I had to try to decide myself if me visiting these elephants was going to harm them in any way. I found another traveller who had been and he described his visit as a journalist; he was encouraging,so I went. Before arriving ... read more

After a pretty full on week since arriving on the island, we decided the second week would be all about swimming, lazing on the sand, reading and just basically watching the days go by. Our days were spent with leisurely breakfasts, sun all day and then dinner from one of many restaurants on the sand or from a street side vendor. You don’t always feel like going out to eat every night, so on a Friday night we noticed a decent Matt Damon movie on TV, so it was takeaway pizza and soft drink on our bed and it was sensational. This also gave us the chance to see our first Cabaret show, which was performed at our hotels beach side restaurant. The show was made of 5 or 6 Lady Boys who put on quite ... read more

After a crazy bus ride, in which we spent very little time on our own side of the road and then a ferry we had completed our first Island hop. With no booking our first job was to get accommodation for the night, and there were plenty of choices. After just 1 night on the island we moved hotels to a place called 15 Palms and booked for 14 nights - in retrospect maybe a little bit too long in 1 place. Our plan was to stay settled and spend Songkran (Thai New Year) in Ko Chang. First impressions of the island. Mountainous, cooler climate in the hills, less dogs, cheaper laundry and loud music where we were situated on White Sands Beach. Ko Chang is the second largest island in Thailand, after Phuket, so it ... read more

Goede tijden slechte tijden...

After a 5 hour coach ride and a 1 hour rusty ferry ride we found ourselves at our first island destination, on Thailand’s second largest island, Koh Chang, which lies in the Gulf of Thailand. We headed for Lonely Beach, or to give it it’s official name Hat Tha Nam. The English version is certainly a misnomer as there is nothing at all lonely about it and in fact “Lonely” should be replaced for “lots of young backpackers”, but I admit that doesn’t roll off the tongue quite so freely. Obviously we fit right on in!!! Arriving at gone 5.00pm meant that there was no room at our preferred beach shack, so we had to settle for an overpriced one until the following morning when we could search for one more in our price range. First ... read more

Koh Chang – A perfect break on a paradise island at the white sands beach resort. Following a few days in Bangkok Maam and I headed to the Island of Koh Chang for some rest and relaxation. We took a mini-van to the nearest town called Trat and got a ferry across to the Island. Because I had a first class guide (I know you will hate me for saying this ha ha) everything was nice and simple and the journey was drama free which makes a nice change for me. I have to confess I got a bit lazy having Maam around because it meant I didn’t have to worry about anything or struggle with the Thai language. Once we reached the island we hired a moped and had the freedom to explore. Things here ... read more

Island hopping is making us get through our time here. We've spent more time at beach resorts than planned but you know, it's kinda nice. Crossing the border into Thailand from Cambodia was straight forward and took only moments. Like any border town on the Thai side it was a bustle with activity but there was only one very expensive mini-van into the closest city of Trat from which we headed to an island known as Koh Chang (Koh menas island and chang is elephant) as the island (after a few beer) looks like the shape of an elephant. It took us all day to get here and to say the least, compared to Cambodia beach resorts, this was heaven ... but very very expensive ... but so so worth it. We stayed in two areas, ... read more

So we arrived at Bangkok airport and took a taxi for a 60 mile journey, when it cost 10 pounds between us we thought okay, Thailand seems to be pretty cheap. We didn't realise the half of it. Our hotel for our first night was called the Royal Hotel, it was huge, had a pool, was right in the middle of the tourist spots and obviously it had been quite a pretty hotel although it was a tiny touch past its prime and at 20 quid a night we thought we had got a great deal, as it would turn out, there were better deals in Thailand to be had! On our first day we hit backpackers central a.k.a. Khao San Road. This place was crazy, market stalls, performers, bars etc etc etc. It was also ... read more

This will be a relatively 'short' blog for the amount of days covered as we didn't have a busy programme compared to some of our other locations, and that was our intention! We chose to head towards the beach and having heard good stories about Ko Chang and favouring a short drive over a long one we decided to go there. On our 1 day in Bangkok we attempted to pay for Jorn's KLM flight (not possible as all offices were closed and the Dutch office was unable to help) we booked a bus ride for the next morning and explored the busy streets around Khao San Road for one afternoon / evening (and that was enough for us). After driving about 4-5 hours the next day we arrived at the ferry which took us across ... read more

After a few crazy days spent in Bangkok, we made our way to the Islands! Quite a treat as we have spent little time indulging in beach life since we have been away. Again we travelled with the locals on a bus, taxi, ferry journey - at this point i might add that our £3 bus ticket provided shear luxury with snacks and cold drinks being brought to us throughout the trip, the Megabus could learn a trick or two!! On arrival the free spirited, taking each day as it comes way of thinking gave us a big smack in the puss when we couldn't find anywhere to stay on the Island. After trawling around for a while, a bar women must have seen the desperation on our faces and offered us a room - bonus!! ... read more
