30th March 2005 Koh Chang, Thailand. So today I packed up my stuff and finished up my room bill and all and took off on the dolphin package with a plan to go straight to Lonely Beach, which had been recommended to me, instead of staying longer at White Sands. I wanted to see more of the island than one beach. So I loaded up all my bags into the jeep (I was the only one booked that day for dolphin swimming - they don't have very good advertising and most people no doubt never realise it's there) and off we went. Had to go back over to Trat on the ferry and then about an hour to Chantaburri. Fell asleep a few times, and then we turned off and went in to this park-like place ... read more

29th March 2005 Koh Chang, Thailand. After a very late awakening I hung for a bit and then took off to try my hand at Elephant trekking. I ended up getting dropped off at wrong beach - did I mention that they don't have traditional taxi's here, just share-taxis which are utes with seats along the edges? Anyway, they do. So I ended up at Klong Prao, which turned out well, because it was there that I saw the sign for a 'Swimming with Dolphins' package. Worked out the details ad organised it for the next day before catching another taxi to the Chang Chutiman Elephant Trekking farm. There's about three elephant setups on the island and I'd chosen that one because they were advertised as having a baby elephant, Charlee. But when I asked to ... read more

28th March 2005 Koh Chang, Thailand. Firstly I should mention to the guys back home that most of these journals don't get written until days later - I just date them as if they were current - and so lots of the little details that I wanted to mention get forgotten. But I met up with the gils (crappy keyboard again, warning) again the next night after lazing about and doing little other than walking and sightseeing. We had a lovely dinner and drank and walked and ended up outside this adorable little bar-type-establisment down the south side of White Sands Beach called "Tantaman" or something. I'm not sure how to label this place - it's kind of like a reggae bar without being obsessively reggae. Most of the staff have dreadlocks and they're all really ... read more

March 27th 2005 Koh Chang, Thailand. Well so much happens so fast and most of it will never get recorded. Ce'st la vie. But to give you a quick refresher course, this is what my last few days were: I ended up making a very bad choice of accommodation when I got to Khao San Rd, I had known that at some point in my journeys I would be...slumming it majorly...but this was just gross, and I sincerely hope it's the worst dive I'm fated to end up in. I did actually ask to see the room and it seemed okay at first glance,I think I mentioned in previous journal, bed a little hard, but hey. But later, when I came back to sleep, oh! The smell of mold was overpowering, I don't know how I ... read more

Note - We had trouble loading pictures for this entry, more will be up in the next day or two so check back. T & J Well, the change of pace from the African cities to those of South-East Asia was great. Bangkok is very high paced, crowded, muggy and smothering hot. On the same hand, it is lively, friendly and very easy. We were told to expect a crazy and confusing place. In our experience, it was hardly that. If you can think of any service you may need, it is at your finger-tips. The airport was amazingly easy. We passed through customs, got some local money (bahts) and grabbed a cab to the city for a reasonable price. During our last week in Lushoto, Tanzania, the power was on for about 2-3 hours a ... read more

The first couple of weeks were wicked, but I didn't get any time to update my blog. Just some of the highlights for me were: My initial arrival in Bangkok, it made me feel all young, excited and giggly. That Sangsom night on Lonely Beach with Ham, Scott, Julian and Caroline - what a tit I made of myself but oh what fun it was. Getting to know Ham a bit better and meeting Scott, Julian and Caroline. School show on Koh Mak (Monkey huts were pretty special as well) Taxi drive of death from the airport back to Soi Rangnam I believe that Karaoke, aerobics & Moog already have quite a big mention... read more

So we left Siem Reap in Cambodia at 7am for Thai border. Bus eventually got going at 8am (this is Cambodia after all!). Got moving for 1 and a half hours before the bus broke down (overheating). Another bus from the same company came along and said they could take 17 of us further up the road to wait for a new bus. 22 of us duly complied to leave this new bus very full. Reached the 'new bus point' and stopped for food. 'New bus' arrived and turned out to be our original bus with some of the original people still there. Transferred bags back on. Reached border 2 hours behind schedule. Stupid Japanese clogged up Thai border queues.......GRRRRR! Got through border. Found 5 other people who wanted to go south to Ko Chang. Found ... read more

I’ve just been to Ko Chang, which means Elephant Island. Ko Chang is Thailand’s second biggest island after Phuket, and two years ago Taksin, the evil Thai Prime Minister (he's friends with little Johnny Howard and Dubya - hardly illustrious company - and boasts that he's a 'Texan Cowboy' because he studied there... *spew*), said that he wanted Ko Chang to become the next Phuket. So lots of government ministers bought land there and resorts and beach huts started going up all over the place, lagoons were filled in, forest areas were cut down. It still looks like a tropical island paradise in many places, especially the beach I was staying at, but driving along the main road, and seeing all the razed plots of land where more resorts will be built, it appears that even ... read more

Kristen and I headed to Ko Chang - as recommended by Sarah and Ann from NZ in Laos. She met up with some friends from Japan and we had a few nights up on the road before space opened up on the beach. We got a beach hut right next to the water and settled there up until two days ago. New Years was a great party on the beach at the Nature Bar. After the fire show and some dancing we went off for some peaceful time, and met a South African couple who told us there was phospherence in the sea. We jumped in and were amazed at the green glowing plankton which lights up when you move in the water! What a perfect new years eve! Lonely beach on Ko Chang was blissfull ... read more
