A good way of getting away from the ordinary life, from all the trouble on the home front, from all the pressure, is to go away. Far away. Thailand is pretty far away from Europe. It strikes me as a good place to escape the western world; on a decent distance from all the worries at home, but yet with the comforts and safety of the civilized world we’re used to, and with an attractive level of prices and a beautiful climate. Koh Chang is surprisingly unexploited by westerners. The second largest island of Thailand meets most of the requirements for a dream vacation, but is sparingly visited. A few families, a few young couples, some groups of friends, and some lonely travelers looking for some peace and quiet. The guy in the reggae bar on ... read more

At first getting to a quiet and rather remote place seemed like a good idea. Kind of burned out at work, so the contrast between Amsterdam and the island of Koh Chang seemed like the perfect remedy to recharge my batteries. Sit on the beach, read a book, drink a beer, relax. Worked for about an hour before my restlessness took its tribute. Boring. Fortunately, Thailand is an ideal place for excursions and activities in the nature. So, a snorkel tour was booked. A full day of activities, snorkeling, four islands, beautiful scenery, food and drinks included, for about 10 Euros. Turned out to be a pretty good deal. The boat was not exactly the most modern of ships, operated by a crew of a handful of teenagers. The equipment - standard snorkel and goggles - ... read more

A long 5 hour ride in the minivan, one-hour ferry ride and 20 minute saengthaew (open-air tiny truck) ride to the 2nd largest island in Thailand. A little bit unnerving when the saengthaew is packed to the brim, with some even having to stand and hang on to the roof! Imagine that, and imagine when it's going uphill. We arrived at White Sands Beach in time to witness the sunset while having dinner at the KC Restaurant. At nightfall, the beach turns into a lantern/light-strewn strip. The beach isn't as nice as Phi Phi - the sand isn't quite white, or as soft, but the lack of tourists and the fact that it isn't as popular made it more inviting to me. ... read more

Hello everybody! Me and Mandy have decided to take it turns to write our updates so for now your stuck with me! This is our second full day on the stunning island of Koh Chang. Bangkok was an exhilerating experience, although I think we both found it a bit "in the face", though our cause probably wasn't helped by our jet lag and general tiredness from a summer of hard work! Anyway we were both agreed in thinkin we needed to hit a beach ASAP, and after a few enquiries settled on Koh Chang. We got a deal for a week in a gorgeous little beach hut with A/C and all other mod cons needed to make it paradise, daily breakfast and 2 visas for Cambodia (when the real explorations/travelling begins!) all for less than one ... read more

As we approached the ferry port in Ko Chang I was pleasantly surprised not the usual concrete jungle imagine of Ko Samui, there really wasn’t much there, I was lucky to get a taxi, but soon my dream of finding an untouched piece of paradise was torn to shreds as we drove along the main road the monopoly of package tourist resorts lead the way……ok ok I may sound a bit drastic but once again fortunately for us (Michelle my fellow travel mate) we spoke to a local lady who caught the taxi with us and she recommended a far more quiet piece of town called Siam Beach, on her recommendations we asked to be dropped off. Siam Beach is on the border of being tipped over by the resorts, I can bet same time next ... read more

I know some of you might think that I don't deserve a holiday considering I've been to 10 countries in the last 3 1/2 months, but that's where you're wrong. The amount of brain power required in daily planning and watching my back, and being a tourist is bloody exhausting. Every book will tell you that you need a break every 3 months...so I've taken their advise, and I feel like a million bucks. I took a bus from Bankok, to the ferry terminal heading towards Ko Chang Island. I chose Ko Chang as it's in the right direction for Cambodia, and known to have a few beaches. Everybody seemed to be heading for White Sands Beach, which confirmed that my choice of Lonely Beach was certainly what I wanted. We piled into the back of ... read more

So we are back in the night train feeling proud that we arranged a smooth time table to be sipping a beer by noon on the beach. Overnight train, 5:50 get off the train right at the airport, catch flight at 7:30, ferry over to the island, grab a cab, easy. Four guys staring at me in that scary kind of way, (Italian guy in Eurotrip)in the train for 3 hours got us off to a strange start. We missed our stop (supposed to stop at airport at 5:55am, somehow the train was EARLY, though we were awake at 5:30) , had to catch a cab back up the line to the airport (the cab driver thought we were late for an international flight so we got to do 160km on the Bangkok freeway, cool. ... read more

We spent 2 nights on Khao San. The one full day we had there was pretty much a shop till you drop day. I ended up getting a few tshirts, a pair of boardshorts, a hat and a wallet, as well as applying for a Vietnamese Visa. We met up with Emilys friend Alyse and then got bus and boat tickets to the island of Koh Chang. Koh Chang is Thailands second largest island and is also a lot closer to Bangkok then the Koh Samui islands. It's a 5 of 6 hour bus ride followed by a short 50 minute ferry ride. We ended up arriving on Koh Chang on Sunday evening, and unfortunately, it was labour day weekend. This means all of the bungalows were full. After searching for about an hour and a ... read more
