The Beach is a Calling again. The lure of the Big Blue and palm shaded beaches meant Koh Chang was the next destination on our list. Checking weather on Tinternet during our brief visit to Bkk all we got was Rain with good chance of thunder storms!!! Omg what do we do? “Computer Says No!” all of Thailand is the same: Showers and Storms in the mid 30’s. We decided to risk it for a biscuit and get on the next bus to Koh Chang. 8am the next morning blue skies greet us. The bus is pretty empty so a comfortable journey got underway with no signs of the Red Shirts through Bangkok. A couple of hours into our journey the heavens open and a big storm is upon us. Are we doing the right thing? ... read more

We spent the last 10 days in Burma, discovering the land of another area....and visiting a lot of temples on the way. We wanted to give "some fun" to Leslie...and us, after such a culture oriented trip. There is great diving in Burma around the Mergui archipelago, but sadly enough, as of today, you can only get there through liveaboards departing from Phuket (this trip is one on our shortening wish list). If when you read this, you are aware of some proper landbase diving operating out of Mergui, I'll be very happy to hear from you. So this time, it's a short 4 days trip to Koh Chang and for us, continuing to explore our new home land in Thailand. There are few options to reach Ko Chang. The more expensive one is (from our ... read more

We arrived at Chang Cliff Resort Hotel at White Sand Beach on the Thai island of Koh Chang by tuk tuk, two mini buses, songthaew (a form of taxi/truck), boat and finally another songthaew. We had been told what a beautiful island it was and it certainly is. We were shocked though to see that the island has already taken on the worst of Thailand. The majority of ‘couples’ are western men (usually older Russian, German or British) with a beautiful young Thai girl whom they had obviously met and fallen in love with on arrival! Every bar in the town is a ‘girlie bar’ with drinks at exorbitant prices. If you are buying a drink you are also paying for the several girls in micro skirts dancing at the front of the bar. Luckily there ... read more

Hello everyone! So we have safely arrived in Thailand after countless hours of bad movies and uncomfortable sleeps. Our two hours in Taipei were thrilling and completed with a meat in a bun sandwich (which was delicious) and some soup that was truly awful. Bangkok airport is really beautiful. Next to YVR possibly the nicest I have been to. We spent about 45 minutes there clearing customs and waiting while my professor ran about doing things. Our first stop was Pattaya. For those of you who don't know, Pattaya is famous for being the "Red Light District City" of Thailand. So lady boys and hookers were everywhere. It was quite the sight for our first few hours but everyone was extremely friendly. Unlike Central America where everyone is yelling at you to buy something/move/come in their ... read more

One of the bar/restaurants on lonely beach really stood out from the others. Called the treehouse, it was built up on stilts over the ocean and featured mats next to low tables and hammocks too! The food was amazing and the vibe excellent with slow, relaxing music blending with the sound of the surf. They had a big sign near the entrance (paraphrased) "Are you tired of all the commotion on this beach? Us too! We've moved to peaceful Long Beach away from the hustle and bustle...bungalows are 250-300 baht and a bus leaves every morning at 10." I was getting a little fed up with the repetiveness of local scene and decided to give it a try. I arrived early, had a thai breakfast (sort of rice porridge), and set myself up in a hammock ... read more

Still hanging out at lonely beach. After the sun went down (it's absolutely regular at 6pm in these tropical climes), I stepped out for an evening with my pals Bidi (german) and Melina and Mike (french). We were having a lot of fun, bar-hopping along the beach. All the bars there are open-air so no excessive heat or smoke. It is customary at these bars to leave your shoes/sandals/flip-flops outside when you go in...not sure entirely why, it's a Thai custom at Buddhist temples but bars are a far cry from a temple despite whatever worship at the porcelain altar might be going on. So Bidi lost his flip-flops. Some reveller must have put them on by mistake. We had a laugh (schadenfreude, as the germans might say) and consoled him that they were cheap enough, ... read more

Got up early and went on a quest for a better bungalow. Found one down the road with air con and a real toilet. So the "village" at lonely beach is a sort of ad-hoc shantytown consisting of clusters of these bungalows, restaurant/bars, tattoo shops (oodles of these!) and the odd convenience store. The beach was nice but I was already developing a magnificant sunburn, so I rented a motor scooter for 200 baht and went for a spin around the island. They held my passport as deposit. 125cc automatic; I'm not sure what the top speed was as the speedo and odomotor were disconnected (the poor man's way of rolling back the milage.) First order of business was to fuel up. All along the main road, there are little shelves set up with old liquor ... read more

I deposited my travel funds with the Thai Farmers Bank, and it was time to go! A friendly taxi driver took me to the bus terminal where I got a ticket to Trat, 5 hours south-east of town. The bus was greyhound style with luggage underneath and passengers on top, but a bit tattier. I sat down and asked my european seatmate "do you speak english?" He did! Me too! Phillip, from Vienna, Austria, and I became friends over the course of the trip. The bus had a TV playing Thai Zombie movies. Hows that for a niche genre?? A couple of Amercian girls adjacent were doing crossword races. Each would start, pencils poised, ready-set-GO! and start scribbling away. Phillip had dozed off, (i wish I could do that on the bus..) and they asked if ... read more

We decided we were going to spend Christmas in ko chang an island about 5 hours away from Bangkok!! The. Journey there from pai was long!!! We had a four hour minibus from pai to chaing mai, where we were due to catch the overnight train to Bangkok the train left at 2.30pm as scheduled and was due to arrive in Bangkok at 5.30am...after about an hour travelling we stopped at some random train station for about an hour and a half for no aparant reason, we finaly started moving again onwards to bangkok, we arrived in bangkok at 7:30am... 2hrs late and then had to get a tuk tuk to the bus station to catch the bus to ko chang, at 7:30 am in the middle of bangkok traffic is stupidly bad so it took ... read more
