It's Christmas time and our holidays of our holidays started on the 23rd of December after a one-night stop in Bangkok. Here we are again - Bangkok!?! There are some experience with this big town, we remembered. This time we felt much better. We could relax by having an 1 hour food massage, manicure & pedicure for Steffi, haircut for Thomas (...we wanted to look nice for xmas), we also did some shopping on the night market in Silom. On the 23rd our bus to Koh Chang started, one more time, very early in the morning. We got some breakfast and then joined directly the bus to our holiday island. The bus took about 6 hours to reach the east coast of Thailand. Then we took a ferry to Koh Chang and taxi to our beautiful ... read more

We have just spent 6 days on the island of Ko Chang, a 5 hour bus ride from Bangkok. We jumped off the ferry and straight into a 'taxi' to the south of the island. We ended up in a room on stilts straight off the pier , we could see the sea through the floor boards! We spent a couple of days on the beach nearby but the sea seemed dirty so moved to a smaller island - Ko Wai. This would have been the perfect tropical island paradise but due to an exeptionally high tide there was virtually no beach, the sea was much clearer and we managed to go snorkelling at last. We spent one night in a VERY basic hut then, after a morning on the beach and in the sea we ... read more

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur jet lagged up to our eyeballs. After much discussion Nick and I have decided that flying East around the globe is definitely worse than flying West. Who knows whether its because of a change in magnetic forces, that feeling of chasing time or simply the fact that to avoid jet lag flying East you need to sleep more on your flights, and a good sleep is almost impossible to get on a plane. Who knows? But what we did know was that we were TOTALLY out of wack. The next three days consisted of sleeping deeply at 3pm in the afternoon, only to wake up and feel like cereal for dinner. By midnight we'd be buzzing with activity and forcing ourselves to lie down with the lights off, only to give ... read more

Having spent a week or so just relaxing and enjoying the comforts of our hotel, swimming in the pool and eating lots of nice Thai food, we decided that it was time to actually do something. In short order we had booked ourselves a days diving in Koh Rang National Marine Park and a day long Thai cookery course. An 8 o’clock pick up meant an early start the next day, we just managed to eat breakfast before the pickup truck came for us at the hotel. The weather was looking ominous, and sure enough, it started to rain whilst on route, causing a scramble to close the rain covering on the back of the open truck. As soon as we arrived at the dive shop we were made to feel at home, our equipment was ... read more

The Khao San Road in Bangkok is the jumping off point for budget travellers to the rest of SE Asia. It’s a road full of white or burnt backpackers wearing flip flops, using the internet cafes/drinking in one of the many bars/eating food from a street stall and just generally easing themselves in to a different way of life. By night the place turns on a million neon lights and music starts pumping from every corner of every building. We were still so jet lagged that it didn’t bother us, in fact it was quite nice waking up to a Thai rendition of Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon at 4am. After a day burning cds full of photos and sending them home, buying tickets to Koh Chang and having some more excellent food at ... read more

Finally, I got back to Thailand. I missed the food so much. Even though the food in Cambodia is similar to Thai food, it's not spicy at all, and I've grown to love spicy food. I stayed for 10 days on the biggest and most developed beach - White Sand beach. The place must be quiet happening during the high season, but during the low season it was quiet and sleepy. Which I didn't mind at all. My only beef was that the waves are huge and I hate swimming with big waves - having grown up on the calm Black Sea. I stayed in a nice room right on the water. Decided to pumper myself after all these rustic bungalows - the place had TV, AC, fridge and WiFi. It's called RockSand, at the northern ... read more

I have to write this entry more for my own memory than anything else. The journey to Koh Chang was something else and I don't want to forget all that we went through to get to this island known to most as a tropical oasis, but to us has been something quite different- but that is another entry altogether! We left Pai at 2.30pm on Wednesday afternoon. We had bought a direct ticket to Koh Chang for 1000b. Slightly overinflated but worth it for the convienience. The drive down from Pai was always going to be curvy as the hairpin bends seemed to be never ending. That wet afternoon our driver must have had a grudge against those mountains and decided to taken them on at crazy speeds. We buckled our seatbelts and held on for ... read more

Koh Chang is in the southeast of the country, close to neighbouring Cambodia, and is the second largest island in the country after Phuket. We had no intention of visiting the island but due to all the trains being booked going south and our desire to visit an island we've not been to before we found ourselves on a 6 Hour bus journey to the ferry pier. The island itself is just offshore so it's a quick car ferry across and then a taxi ride to wherever on the island you want to go. We decided to book three seats on the bus as we've taken the tourist buses out of Banglamphu before and found ourselves on a knackered old minibus with barely functioning air conditioning. I didn't want to experience that again with a toddler ... read more
