Hi guys - hope you are all OK. Well so far the trip has been fantastic and even though it's only day 4, I feel like I know Bangkok like the back of my hand!! It's an amazing city and Koh Sahn Road where I'm staying is buzzing with life 24 hours a day. The hostel is like a little oasis of calm in the middle of bedlem and the staff really go out of their way to make you feel at home which is lovely. So far, I've taken a trip to the Grand Palace, Wat Poh, the massage palour at Wat Poh (which is a must!) and the National Musuem. I've also met a whole host of people from holiday makers to hardcore travellers, some of whom are back in Bangkok for the 5th ... read more

Day 1 (20/10/05) I'm here, safe & good. I knew you would all be worrying! So my story so far... Got off the plane & headed to a taxi. Put my 36kg (overweight) suitcase in the trunk (ask KK!)...My first words to the f/ka was... "Pai Ratchada mai khab, METRE ye..." (go to 'Ratchada rd? Using the taxi metre) "ye ye" got in & I was like metre metre!!!..."awwww nooo 300 bhat & I pay highway toll." For the sake of 50 bhat I wasn't going to tell him to pull over on the highway so yer I had to agree. I only had 200 bhat on me so I slipped him 5 quid. F/k knows what that converts too, its about 300 bhat right? If not, good, the cnut. Got to my digs. Im sure ... read more

Eggs 1 & 2 We ended up staying in Bangkok for three days and 4 nights, and really enjoyed it. A number of folks go there and have not a lot of good things to say - focussing on the pollution, the noise, the traffic etc - and it's true, these exist in excess. However, being the awkward b'tards that we are, we quite took to the place. On our second day, we visited the Grand Palace ( which was under repair with lots of scaffolding unfortunately, but grand indeed nonetheless), Wat Po, and the other Wat we cant remember the name of today (duh - tongue in chin). The sun was shining with not a cloud in the sky and we had a great time, wandering and pondering the fabulous sights. We've added some of ... read more

Well, I finally made it after the longest single flight I've taken in my lifetime. Nearly 11 hours door-to-door but thankfully mostly during the night so slept a bit too. Have to say that the in-flight food was quality and the free wine didn't go to waste. Anyway, landed at Bangkok at 3.30pm local time Friday (9.30am UK) and within 50 yards of clearing customs I'd been accosted by at least 3 locals offering their taxi services. One bloke in particular offered me a cab at 600baht (about 8 quid) to my hotel but me being me I immediately said 500. Well, it turned into a classic mexican standoff and eventually we went our separate ways as neither of us was budging. Sadly for me though, I went to another bloke who said 700, so I ... read more

Visited Countries Map As some of you may know, we originally planned on going to India. We had some visa issues and couldn't go there, so we had to find somewhere east of Greece and west of Australia that didn't have any visa requirements AND that Delta or one of its partners flew AND they had seats available for us in the time frame that we needed. As I told Doug, "things happen for a reason" and we were able to find seats to Thailand, albeit in coach. We have been so spoiled flying in business class, that we considered not going, and during the third flight of the day that itself was 10.5 hours, we weren't the happiest of campers, BUT it would have been a huge mistake to skip it because we love ... read more

This is going to be quick b/c I have 3 hours left in Bangkok. Anyway, I spent 3 great days in Kanchanaburi. Met some really fun English people to hang out with - yesterday I was actually thinking with an English accent. It was awesome. Anyway, I went over the Bridge over the River Kwai, went to a great museum about the work camps in the area during WWII - a lot of Allied prisoners of war died in the construction of the Thailand - Burma railway along the River Kwai. Talked to one of the Brits about movies/music/ art in general for hours, went to a waterfall with 7 levels, the Erawan waterfall. Mainly just had a great time. Oh, also one night while we were watching a movie at the hostal, it started raining ... read more

Egg #2 We finally made it out of the UK after hanging around for weeks on end getting in everyone's way! Having travelled for about 18 hours we checked into our hotel at local time 5pm and went to sleep for 12 hours. We're staying in this place called the Royal Hotel - bit old and run down but very clean and has a nice wee pool, very close to the Grand Palace and Khao San Road where all the serious travellers hang out. Got up at 5am - breakfast buffet at 5:30am (hello - what happened there- up before 12 noon?! Call the cops!) Anyway - went for a walk about round the sights and got stopped loads by tourist touts masquerading as friendly Thai passers by - just helping us Farangs (foreigners) out. Took ... read more

After a rather quite week in Singapore (mainly because I was not feeling welll...could be because I lost my Qray bracelet which many of you know make me feel good by balancing my Chi), my first night in Bangkok involved a late night drinking with an English guy I met in the hotel (Sawadsee Smile Inn on Rambuttri street). I woke with a bit of a hang over but pushed myself to go see some sights. The first on the list was the Chatuchak Weekend Market (it covers an area of 70 rai (35 acres), contains more than 15 000 shops and stalls, has over 200 000 visitors each day, and they spend an estimated total of 30 million baht (approx US$750 000)). After bumping into Keren, my friend from Nepal (we made plans to meet ... read more

Today we do the tourist thing, as Kev is feeling a bit better so we catch the boat up the river, which is the colour of mud to the Grand Palace. On the way there, we're told by several 'helpful' people that the Grand Palace is actually closed this morning and that we should be going to the Thai Export Factory instead. We chose to ignore them and find ourselves at the Grand Palace. It's doing good business for somewhere that is closed and there are thousands of tourists milling around, looking bewildered and lost like us, it's sprawling! It's also extremely hot and you have to cover up from head to toe, no exposed arms, ankles or bellies! It is extremely beautiful though and we view the Emerald Buddah, the most important and revered Buddah ... read more

I 'VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN...........kinda how I feel about Thailand although after watching Michael Buble in Bangkok. It was an average Friday morning and I swear I'm getting old cos I felt about 50.I done some chores which always get's me going at the start of the day, then went over to the guesthouse and had a big breaky. After watching the highlight's of the England vs Poland which was pretty good I headed to work before going to Bangkok.I had some test's and progress report's to do but it didn't take long as most of the student's didn't turn up for it anyway.I'll stop boring you now with this and cut straight to point!I got to Bangkok hoping it had been replaced by an oasis of bird's and lush forest but 'No' it was still ... read more
