Once we'd decided to head back to Bangkok, we quickly made some arrangements for onward bus & catamaran travel, booked a nice hotel, and left the next morning. Typically, the weather was sunny as we left Ko Tao (however, I've checked blogs since and it started right back up again the next day). The journey North was a bit more eventful. I was quite ill on the crossing back to Chumphon. The captain of the boat was obviously in a hurry to make up time ,as the catamaran left half an hour late, and his enthusiasm knew no bounds - much to my green gilled dismay! The roads back to Bangkok were also waterlogged most of the way - the water levels hitting above the wheels of the bus as we drove through some parts. The ... read more

Grand palace attempt 1- The appointment of the Deputy Prime Minister & Public Health Minister meant the Palace was genuinely closed in the morning & not just closed because some tuk-tuk driver is after a quick buck. We walked through the outskirts of Chinatown down cloth-sellers' street, Buddha-sellers' street and the dual purpose guitar & typewriter shopping street (correlation? adept with hands..no real idea). I have no idea how one can select which retailer to go to- I must point out, that all wares seemed identical. On our return, we detoured past the giant swing- doesn't every capital need one? Apparently it was used by the Emperor for specific ceremonies. We also past the impressive democracy monument- surrounded by several lanes of honking traffic acting rather undemocratically really. Dinner was at the fabulous Tuptims which became ... read more

A lot seems to have happened since our Phuket trip. First, Jim and I have now driven our car twice, although it is still very stressful to drive here. We are contemplating hiring a driver - maybe sharing one part-time with another family in the building. It's very cheap and saves on stress of potentially hitting a motorcycle taxi - if it weren't for the multiple motorcycle taxis that zoom in and out around the car, it would be much easier to drive in Bangkok. Second, we got to celebrate Halloween three times - at our building, at Max's school, and at the U.S. Embassy. Max was happy to have multiple occasions to wear his "Eyeore" costume (actually, it was just a donkey costume I found here, but was the closest thing I could find that ... read more

I arrived in Bangkok yesterday afternoon after bidding farewell to the friendly city of Chiang Mai in the north. Bangkok is a bit crazy. It's hot, humid, busy, smoggy, huge, and impossible to navigate by foot. Right after dropping my stuff off at my guest house, I walked to the nearby road where I was greeted by a friendly tuk-tuk (pronounced took took) driver. Now for a quick introduction to tuk-tuk's. These are the small beasts that roam the streets of the large cities of Thailand. Part motorcycle, Part car, Totally Thai. These three wheeled machine are powered by small (80 or 150cc) motorcycle engines, and have two compartments- one for the driver, and the other for the passenger. It operates like a motorcycle except for a stick shift that sits between the drivers legs (which ... read more

Just a quick post to keep y'all updated! The last week has been kind-of hectic. Being a student and all that, I left two assignments untill the last day. Managed to get them both done in a few hours & handed them in the next day. I now have a lesson plan to complete by Saturday (sh!te). Not only that but I must present my lesson to the class. The lesson & plan must reflect 'first conditional' statements, the level aimed at will be intermediate. I'm fuked already! The plan was to atleast start the lesson plan & course journal today but I forgot my data stick so that plan is out the window. Life here so far has consisted of drinking Thai whisky (sam song/song sam)?..& eating. I enjoy both so it's all good! Both ... read more

The trip back to Bangkok was very efficient and comfortable. I caught the "fast" catamaran from the island back to the mainland and from there was herded onto a large, air conditioned bus. I was able to lay down on the area under the television and catch a few "zzz" before we hit Bangkok 8 hours later (8pm). Having been here before was helpful in that I new a good guest house on Rambuttri (Rambuttri Villiage Inn). It is a bit expensive at $11 per day but I get hot water! I have not had hot water for over two weeks. It is amazing the little things you miss. I stood in the show for about an hour letting the hot water fall on me and smiling/laughing. I met up with my friend Tamar (we met ... read more

our plane ride was painless esp with the wine and pad thai to hold us over. it was the best plane meal ever. goodbye Vietnam and hello Thailand!! we took a local bus straight into the mecca of backpackers. it was getting dark and places were filling up so we opted for this one bungaloo for 200 baht = $5. we thought we were getting hooked up with a sweet deal since it is an alley off the main drag. we took the key and headed to our room, which only partly closed with a pad lock, was infested with mosquitos and the window screens (instead of glass windows) were barely attached. good thing stace was able to duct tape us in. we swear it was a room straight out of a horror movie with the ... read more

After a long day of exploring the wonders of Thailand, it is quite natural for the traveler to sit down in a nice bar and have a drink. The second day of my Thai adventure was no exception to this behavior. Now, despite the popularity of Thailand among Westerners, as a European you quite stand out from the local crowd. For whatever reason - for your good looks, for your wallet, for your charisma, for your fertility - you attract attention from the locals. Walking past a bar in certain areas result in unison “Welcome!!!” from a number of girls sitting in the bar. Usually it is a handful of young women sitting in the bar who when they see a potential guest drop everything at hand, smile, and produce this one word in a loud ... read more

Hi everyone, We flew up to Bangkok from Phuket and made our way straight to its backpacking center, Khao San Road. Khao San is crowded with backpackers from all over the world, a string of pubs and cheap guesthouses and stalls that sell pretty much everything! On our first day we took a boat trip along the river to get to the Vietnamese Embassy to to sort out our visas, then we took a trip to the huge MBK shopping center and strolled around the maze of shops. The next day we dedicated to sightseeing, we saw the Grand Palace, the standing Buddah and the Vimanmek Teak Mansion, lots of walking but well worth it, some of the temples were amazing. From there we went to a nearby stadium for the night to watch some Muay ... read more

Khao San Road - Bankok Flew from Kathmandu to Bankok (superb views of the Himalayas when leaving Kathmandu from the left side of the plane!). Absolutely stinking hot in Bankok. Stayed on Khao San Road (thankfully we were able to eventually find a room that didn't look like a prison cell, wasn't bug infested and didn't smell like marijuana. At 10.30 pm when we arrived the street was swarming with people, food vendours and people selling fake ID's/degrees etc. (anything you requested really!). It was a little disturbing to see a Victorian heavy vehicle drivers licence pinned to their sample board! Lots of people drinking cocktails (from small buckets!). There was certainly lots of good people watching to be done when you combine all these things. Great phad thai noodles (20 bhat a plate or 70cents) ... read more
