Got a phonecall at 7.10am to say our minibus was here to take us to the floating market. Having had the minibus turn up the day before as there had been a mistake in the booking & resulting in a telephone conversation with the tour operator hanging up on us, we weren't expecting the bus to turn up today. Anyway we rushed around & fifteen minutes later we had arranged a late checkout, were dressed & in the bus apologising to the other tour members for the delay. An hour later we stopped at a plantation that made sugar from coconut flowers & an orchid farm that grew orchids funnily enough. The minibus dropped us off by the water (supposedly as no road vehicles can get to the market) & we took a long tailed motor ... read more

arrived in bangkok after seeing danny in singapore. singapore was good but it was quite expensive except for the taxi's they seemed to be very cheap. alcohol is very very expensive we bought 2 jugs of beer for $45.00. somehow though i seemed to get very drunk & don't remember half of friday night & spent most/all of saturday with a massive hangover. won't be doing that again for awhile. bangkok however is very cheap although san would like it to be cheaper. we went in a tuk tuk for an hours ride & it cost us $5.00. how cheap is that. we had a meal & a long neck for $8.00 yet san still wanted it cheaper. i think he is getting spoilt over here. he will start bargaining everyone when he gets back. ... read more

We had now been joined by Rachel and Marie so we had all booked to go to the floating market on Monday morning. However, our tour booker was concentrating her efforts on eating crackers and booked us on it a day early (and had closed when we realised this error). So I was in the lobby at 7am to attempt to explain this to our guide. After a Thai/English discussion that got us nowhere, he phoned his boss and I had to speak to him via mobile. The result of the conversation was ambiguous, but the indication was that we wouldn't be going anywhere on Monday (since our tour agent was handily closed all of Sunday). This mini-saga over we headed for the famous Chatuchak weekend market as planned. We took the cheap as chips canal ... read more

After a goodbye meal with Alexey and Irena - our Muscovite friends who we met via a motorbike chat room - another story - (big thanks guys for showing us a great time) we hopped on our home for the next four and a half days as the wheels were almost rolling. Imagine our surprise as the train was not the sumptuous beast that transported us to the Capital, but perhaps a reject from BR’s 70’s rolling stock. Post steam. Just. The next few days were spent mimicking Anne Frank (we stayed in quite a lot) and an average speed of 70 km/h ensured our window on the ever-changing scenery (actually not much) was not too blurred. The riotous scenes at the infrequent station stops as our carriage companions peddled their clothing wares to local punters ... read more

Hello all! We arrived in Bangkok on Tuesday after a remarkably comfortable journey across the pacific (well, as comfortable as an 18 or so hour journey can be- thanks Singapore Air!). The metropolis of Bangkok dwarfs any city we have previously visited- the city seems to stretch forever in all directions. The air is just like you've heard- absolutely digusting. Buses, cars and tuk-tuks spew fumes into the air that fill the city with a thick blanket of smog. We'd been told to avoid walking around the city, but we've enjoyed going places on foot. The city is filled with life- street vendors selling crafts, clothes and food food food! The street food is fantastic- we've had several delicious, fiery green papaya salads, terrific noodles and plenty of fresh tropical fruit. Dishes are usually in the ... read more

Sunday we took a quick trip to the beach. We drove southeast about 180 km from Bangkok. The trip was via expressway so traffic going there was fairly light. Rayong is also where the ferrys for Koh Samet start. This was a rather spur of the moment trip so we didn't have time to go to Koh Samet. We plan to go there pretty soon though. To get there requires a ferry ride of about 40 minutes or 10 minutes via speedboat. We stopped for a bite to eat along the main beaches in Rayong Town, Laem Charoen and Saeng Chan Beaches. Honestly, we were underwhelmed by them and the place was just dead. There seemed to be a lot of nightlife in the area and it was only 1 in the afternoon on Sunday, so ... read more

Howdy, So, some of you haven't heard from me in a while, and maybe wondering why i've sent you this long, or what i anticipate to be long-ish email. some of you from home, some friends from australia. I'm on the road again after 3 months of being at home, and quite enjoying it. Where? Thailand and beyond! So, i'm going to keep sending out these emails to you unless you let me know you don't want to get them, which'd be pretty mean. also, if i'm somewhere that you've been, feel free to give me some tips or something. Other than that, hopefully it'll just be a bit entertaining for you. So, Bangkok Thailand. So far so good. The plane ride went well, 14 hours of dozing from vancouver to shang-hai (sp?), 4 hours in ... read more

Finally back in Bangkok. What a flight! After I unwrinkled myself I took my taxi to the We-Train International House for my 3-day stay. The We-Train is an inexpensive, safe and clean place to stay when you arrive after a long flight. It's not your typical accomodation. In fact, it is part of the Association for the Promotion of the Status of Women and was constructed under the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Soamsawali. (Her Royal Highness). We-Train accomodates up to 300 people offers 27 guest rooms at a mere 400BHT ($10USD). Its only 10 minutes from the airport. Aside from the fact its so close and clean, its not the most comfortable. So if you're used to the Holiday Inn, go somewhere else. But if you are in need of a budget room and want to ... read more

Finally, having walked around the perimeter to find the entrance, past the entrance criteria (stricter dress codes than a Friday night out in Solihull) and paying the vast sum of 250B each (about $8), we got into the Grand Palace. First the Coin Museum, much more interesting than it sounds due to the inclusion of lots of very sparkly royal jewellery and the Emerald Buddha's alternative golden ensembles for Winter and Dry seasons. Then we entered the actual palace and the Emerald Buddha's Wat. It was absolutely beautiful and demanded heaps of photos to be taken. Buddha was in his Rainy season, off the shoulder, number-but obviously no shots can be taken inside the Wat-so I bought the postcard (he sits on a huge golden pedestal and is actually only about 3 feet tall, and is ... read more
