So, we received a few comments from readers disappointed about the content of the blog. Apparently you wanted to read about this, and we posted something about that. You expected yin, and we gave you yang. Well, all I have to say about that is phooey on you! Just kidding of course, but in all seriousness (not that you can see me), but writing this blog is well, harder than it looks. I apologize, but sometimes I'll either purposefully or accidentally leave things hanging. For example, long-time readers are probably still expecting me to post a list of the contents of each of our bags. Well, that's probably not going to happen, though at the end Sherry and I thought it would be fun to look at our bags and figure out just how many things ... read more

If you're backpacking, the only place to stay in Bangkok is around Khao San Road. It's the backpackers quarters, there's a sense of belonging because everyone else looks out of place too - there are practically more tourists than there are locals in that area. The famous Chantuchak market supposedly has 10,000 stalls - the humidity was quite intolerable. I know some girls would do anything for a bargain but I'm not one of them. Still, we hung around for 5 hours which was pretty good work, I reckon. We took a river cruise along Chao Phraya River on this really skinny, flimsy, sorry excuse for a boat. Jess was worried about dying, I was worried about getting dirty. Hey, mud is probably cleaner than what's in the river. What can I say? I'm all about ... read more

Hello everyone. First off, any one who ever tells you that Thailand is a backpackers paradise is absolutely telling the truth. I love it here. It is by far the friendliest place I have been on this trip, friendly for meeting other people I mean. I arrived about 9 am to the hostel and the first thing I notice is 3 guys sitting outside drinking beer, they hadn't been to bed yet. Crazy. I met a Canadian guy within an hour, we headed to Khaosan Road to sort out a visa for me and to just look around. Khaosan Road is this area of Bangkok thats just full of guesthouses and hotels, bars and restaurants, travel and tour agents, vendors selling anything and everything, street vendors selling all kinds of food from spring rolls and pad ... read more

Dog Days “There are a lot of three-legged dogs around here.” I remarked as we all sat on the bed of our hotel room in Pattaya. This comment likely seemed no stranger than the décor of the room. All the walls were a shining white, accented with black and purple zebra-striped trim. At the head of each bed there was a beach sunset painted in purple and pink. The rooms even had little balconies that looked out onto the beach, or road in front of the beach as it were, which had the same magnificent zebra-stripes painted on railing. The stripes gave the rooms a kind of cheap and trashy feel, which is exactly how I might describe Pattaya. Pattaya is a city known for vice. It is the sex trade capital of Thailand and ... read more

Hello everyone! Well I have reached the islands after a few days in the rain forest so I can finally update you all. I was very pleased to have the greatest emails to read, and I have already been here for half an hour reading them all... The internet here is double the price in Bankok ($2 instead of $1 per hour) but you get a bit stingy when it costs twice the price of dinner for an hour on the internet! So my adventures began when I arrived in Bangkok LATE on Saturday night... The next day I went with Constanza (also on the tour) to Ko Stan Road which is a big shopping area. I looked at HEAPS of stuff that I wanted! There was heaps of Catseye jewellery like what I have, but ... read more

Today, I had a mission. Jeffrey's class has been studying the country of India since the beginning of the term. This study will end with India Day in their classroom next week. They will perform an play about India, they have chosen Indian names (Jeffrey has chosen "Kartikeya" which means "God of War") and they are going to wear Indian clothes. Which presented a slight problem, since India-wear hasn't been a normal part of Jeffrey's wardrobe. So, today I went to India town (next to Chinatown) and went on a shopping expedition while the boys were at school. First, I took a taxi to the skytrain. Then, I took the skytrain to the river Chayo Praya. Then, I took a water taxi on the river (11 bht, about a quarter). Then, I got off the water ... read more

Left Heathrow last night after lots of goodbyes to both families, everyone was really sad so we had to contain our excitement til we'd passed through the gates...finally through we were on our way and on our own, so excited and abit scared but it was what we'd been waiting for! Killed abit of time shopping (or should i say looking ) around the airport until it was finally time to board the plane. Before we knew it 11hrs had passed and we were landing in Bangkok-watching Tom Cruise for 11hrs definitly helps pass the time! Got talking to the girl next to us called Lynsey, she was only 18 and very 'blonde'....she thought Bangkok was in Japan-ah bless! Once outside the airport things were easier than we thought-jumped on the shuttle which dropped us ... read more

So Lou finally got his first taste of Southeast Asia. With the smells and sights, Buddhist monks, tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaws), long-tailed speedboats, and 13 year old prostitutes in Bangkok (only lookie....no touchie), it was quite an initiation. We spent the day taking a tour of the Bangkok Canal, the Grand Palace, and the Emerald Buddha Temple. After resting for an hour (FYI, it is about 95 degrees and 100% humidity), we went to a Thai Tailor to be fitted for new suits. You can get a couple handmade wool suits, shirts, and silk ties for around $175 and they are finished within 24 hours. Of course Peter opted for the cashmere blend suits and Egyptian cotton shirts, but still very much a bargain. Leaving tomorrow for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and will send the next blog entry ... read more

This Sunday morning we spent time walking through Hyde Park in Sydney and exercising at the hotel facilities. After packing and checking out of the hotel, we walked to the harbour for lunch and then left for the airport. Currently we are on the long flight from Sydney to Bangkok, Thailand. Lou is being pampered in business class as I am “roughing” it in economy class. As we are traveling in a large Boeing 747, Lou is experiencing being seated on the upper deck of the aircraft. As we are in the last hour of this flight, I am looking out the window on Phnom Penh, Cambodia lit up at night. This flight has taken us over a major section of Australia (about 6 hours of the flight) over, Brunei, Indonesia, Vietnam (saw Ho Chi Minh ... read more
