Predictably we were very tired this morning, being woken up by a loud humming noise and vibrations in the building. Apparently a big truck with a septic tank is drilling for leftovers in the sewage pipes just outside. Good morning to you too. Back to sleep. Around noon we are finally outside, walking the beat in Chinatown. The early blue sky has turned gray and we're just waiting for the inevitable shower. Singapore sitting so close to the equator gives it a pretty much same-same weather every day, hot and cloudy with frequent quick showers being what I remember from last time I visited. Walking around a bit at random we decide to have lunch at a Cantonese style restaurant which surprises us with some really good steamed chicken feet. The meat just peels off the ... read more

Visiting Singapore once again.. it reminded me about last trip here, same view, neat and clean city... mm.. Johan and I started the first day in China Town where we had room here. Nice pick! Great food and Chinese environment.. heading for Dim Sum place, then we decided to go to centre where most tourists go first.. Waiting for bus for quite long time then we decided we should go by train. Hanged around area, took boat cruise just like tourists do.. took pictures.. In the late afternoon we met Jason, my good friend, so nice to see him again, then we had Indonesian dinner around Boat Quay.. similar to Thai food but not spicy at all.. after dinner walked around area.. not bad for the first day.. ... read more

Today we moved to The Prince of Wales 'Hostel' in Little India. This trip was ok as I have now cheated and bought a little trolley to assist me with my bag! (Melissa that is). We settled into our cheap double with nice air con.. Eventually we ventured out to the Tekka centre for some lunch. Hoping to have a bit more luck with my selection. I had Hokkien Noodles, which looked nothing like the picture! Andy had sweet and sour pork. Again Andy finished mine. (at this rate I will loose this extra weight I have got travelling!) We went upstairs and looked around the stalls selling hundreds of sarees. There are so pretty and colourful. I would really like to have one, but don't think it would go down too well. Even though they ... read more

Try saying that after a beer! Anyway we were up early for our second day in the big city of Singapore. Did you know it's the same size as the Isle of Wight. WELL NOW YOU DO! It's such a big change from Australia, much more character and culture, just what we need for our last leg of our trip. Today was about more temples and more walking. We set off through Chinatown to a small Chinese temple called Siang cho keong, it was very nice, there were people lighting candles outside and burning joss papers that they had bought, that represents money, to give to the gods. We spent about fifteen minutes here in the soaring heat before heading down to ANOTHER temple and this time it was the Thian Hock Keng temple, the oldest ... read more

Can't believe we are here and on our final stretch of our round the world trip! It has gone so quick, for us at least. We intend on enjoying Asia as much as we can as we have sooooooooooo been looking forward to this. So today we were up early and off for a day of sight seeing. First stop on the MRT (we have learnt, pretty quick, that when you have used your ticket for your journey you put it back in the machine and you get $1 back! Great!) for us is Little India and the Abdul Gaffor Mosque (Islam). We took off our shoes and quietly went inside. It was so quiet in there. There was one man praying on his knees at the front and several people 'sleeping' around the mosque. We ... read more

With the great collage photos courtesy of Michelle, all that is to be said about my week in Singapore is: thank you to one of my most lurvely friends Mich, who has been a great host, and made my week in Singapore a truely memorable one (though it must be said, your accountability for having gained me an extra few pounds is not something to be proud of)! Memorable moments: Dancing the night, and the morning away at the Butter Factory (and the recuperations required thereafter)!, shopping in China town. And eating. Lots of eating! Memorable phrase: "Are you kidding me?!" Memorable food: Cold sweet longhans by the poolside at night. Mm, yum! Memorable daily pastime: Swimming (when the skies weren't conspiring against me)! Hoping our next rendez-vous is in the not too distant future. Merci ... read more

We have now arrived in Singapore! Our flight was wicked (not used this word for a while, or cool). We flew for 2 hours where we were given a nice hot lunch and a couple of beers. We then had a half hour stop in Darwin, so we can now say we have been in the Northern Territory. Back on the flight for a movie and more food and beer. Andy had 5 free beers in total We caught the MRT (massive rapid transport) to China Town where we then walked to our hostel where we got booked in at 8.30pm to a 6 bed dorm. We were tired so relaxed in the reception area/lounge planning our next few days, then went to bed.... read more

So Singapore....arrived 5am after another terrible night on the bus, only upside was i met a lady from KL who was quite interesting..talked about a few politics and cities and stuff, she was cool, and i guess i got a couple of hours sleep so not completely hopeless.. immigration was pretty intimidating in singapore, lots of questions, few smiles, they seem to suspect every single person of trying to bring tonnes of explosives, weapons, drugs, and (probably most drastically for these weird immigration people) chewing gum - yes its illegal! anyway got through despite the copious amounts of all these that i was so obviously carrying, and got dropped in the city somewhere on a sidewalk without a map or any idea of where a hostel was... eventually managed to get a cab and through some ... read more

After another shocker of am overnight journey, we reached Singapore, and unsuprisingly we didn't learn from our mistakes and were again hostel-less at about 5am. Fortunately we'd met someone earlier who'd been to Singapore and we could just about remember the name of it, so we were luckily able to stay there. Although we could have stayed with the scariest man in Singapore, who was on our bus and decided he'd offer us a plce to stay in his flat...no thanks. Singapore, again, is quite a nice city, and if you had enough money it'd be an awesome place to go with the night safri, the huge zoo, underwater world and Sentosa which is a cool island just off its coast. However, we didn't have a lot of money, so most of time was either horrendously ... read more
