Asia now blogger buddies! Singapore is a hustley bustley kinda town. Very clean, very clean. Lots of lights, lots of cameras, lots of action. Stayed in a cool little hostel in little India. Apparently voted the best hostel in Asia by lonely planet. That might be going a bit far. Best things we did were, eating lots of cheapy yummy asian food, checking out the botanic gardens and finding a spot up on Mt Faber, overlooking the whole place lit up at night. The week has flown by! Now it is time to see as much of the sights as I can this weekend. I spent the last few days working and did not really go out except to eat, which is the #1 Singaporean pastime from what I've seen. It's no wonder with variety of foods brought together by the mix of cultures here. I enjoyed a meal with Mei Yuen, a WDA staff person last night. She introduced me to more local food and I had a chance to have my first real conversation with a Singaporean. She mentioned that a person who visits Singapore will be asked "what have you eaten" as opposed to "where have you visited" because food is so important. I believe it, any place that sells food is always busy. It amazes ... read more

Well after more than 20 hours and over 10,000 miles I made it to Singapore. On the first leg to Tokyo I sat next to a Philipino, horse track bookey and the second a Singaporan oil/gas guy, both very friendly. Breezed through immigration and custon - 15 mintues - and that was with a line. Tired to say the least. My host, Marilyn is fantastic and very gracious. A welcome respite for a weary traveler. Although tired, I couldn’t sleep until about 3:30 am. I slept for about 4 hours then was up exploring the city. First off Kaya Toast for breakfast - a yummy concoction of cocanut jam and butter smashed between toast and a cup of strong coffee with milk - condensed milk no less. I walked all over town, to Chinatown, Orchard Rd ... read more

Nothing too exciting to report other than that our first two flights went fine, and we've been wandering around the Singapore airport for about 3 hours with 4 more to go until we fly to Thailand. We made the mistake of going through immigration right away, and since we can't check in for our next flight until morning, we're stuck in the "public" area...not too many shops or anything. But we did find a "cafe" with free internet as long as you buy an expensive coffee... Saying good-bye to New Zealand wasn't too bad...well, I did have quite a few tears at the airport with Dan's family (Carol, Nick, Amanada and the boys, and grandparents) which was silly because we'll be seeing them in a couple of months! But I'm such a sap, I couldn't help ... read more

Last stop: Singapore! The island that is at the same time a city and a country. Singapore is the epidomy of modern. The MRT zips above ground transporting mass amounts of people all over the city. It is also the cleanest city I have ever been in, and there are even fines if caught litering, smoking in public places, and spitting in public. One of the first things to notice about the city centre in Singapore is that it is almost entirely made up of shoping centres. It is absolutely insane to walk along Orchard Road and they just never stop. They are usually at least 6 stories high. Some of them are knows for electronics, some for average clothing (similar to the malls we have at home), some are exclusively topend malls where I felt ... read more

Arrived by bus from Malaysia to Singapore and stayed at one of our friends apartments for a night. Went out for dinner on Orchard Road, and spent the next day seeing as much of Singapore as we could. Went across to Sentosa Island by cable car, saw Chinatown, the biggest IT shopping mall, had a drink at the Raffles Hotel, went on a night safari and just made it to our flight to Dubai at the end of the day (very tired and hot!) after sleeping on the train on the way there. http://stephenkaren.awardspace.com/... read more

The adventure continues. Yesterday, after listening to the Oilers beat the Red Wings on Internet radio (yay!) I decided to go out for lunch. What followed was my first hawker eating experience. A hawker area reminds me of an outdoor food court, with service to your table. Certainly not fancy but very fast and I had an excellent meal of roasted chicken, rice and baby bok choy and a bottled water for $3 Singapore. I wasn't in downtown or a tourist area and the server did not really speak English, which made it interesting to explain what I wanted and answering questions that I couldn't understand. I was the only tourist in the area and most of the food signs were not in English so I went by the picture. There were some very interesting pictures ... read more

Hello everybody we're safe and well though very very hot. The 12 hour flight here was bearable though we didn't manage to sleep. Rich managed to smash a wine glass down the main isle of the plane with caused much amusment..manly to myself. We've spent two nights and nearly three days in Singapore now and are due to fly to Bali tonight. The weather has been a mixture of sun and the odd torrential shower but very humid throughout. Luckily we have air conditioning in our room, a much needed relief. Much to my and most likely your surprise rich has'nt burnt yet!! Our room is very basic, more a less a box room with a double bed but is cheap so we're happy. We've had a look around Little India, China Town, Orchard road and ... read more

Wow! I can't believe I am actually here. 28 hours of travelling can make a person a little bit loopy but I am pretty much back to normal, or so I think. Thank goodness for all the food, drinks, satellite radio and movies on the plane, it makes the travel a bit more enjoyable. I've settled into the apartment and made friends with the secuity guards who sit in their little kiosk just right of the apartment (see Mom, no need to worry...) 24 hours a day. I spent yesterday orienting myself to my new 'hood and then I was off to Orchard Road, the main shopping district (of course). First impressions of Singapore: so green extremely well-organized very clean and safe very diverse excellent food cheap and good transit system Lessons learned so far: do ... read more

Friday 21st - Tuesday 24th Last day at Dolphin Bay. Not seen any dolphins but think perhaps it’s too hot, never below 35 degrees. Our new friend, a local dude, has assured Hugh that they’re about in the evening. The weekend brought a new style of resident. Last week was predominantly European, now, large Thai families. The well to do of Bangkok me thinks. We hear them around 7 - 7.30 am in the pool but by 10am the place is deserted (avoiding the intense sun from 10 till 4). Light skin, I'm told, being considered a reflection of health, wealth and beauty. We, naturally, haven’t grasped this and boldly march about with lots of pink bits commenting on how hot it is! Katie remains untouched as we slip, slap, slop on a frequent basis. She ... read more
