Amanda stayed in Australia so I was goin it alone which was not scary no matter how many times I was asked (and by sum pretty scary lookin people i might add). I flew in in the middle of the night so didnt really know what to expect but of course it was roasting so I knew was in for a few days of sun woohoo!! lucky i had booked into a hostel with a pool! Arabian Mornings I paid a brief visit to the Arabian quarter with its magnificent mosque, but I did not linger in this area due to the Monsoonuous* rainfall that was attempting to turn me into something with the appearance of a drowned rat. * Is this even a word? Literary Trails Having got an email from my future employers with a reading list I thought it would be wise to at least get the one book which was compulsory. Since I have only 3 weeks in the UK before I start work and am unlike to find time then to read such a book I figured it was the only way. And surely Singapore would be an easy place to buy a book on banking? Apparantly not. I spent most of the afternoon trawling around samey ... read more

Shop 'til you drop Along with eating shopping is apparantly Singapores national pastime, and todays experiences seem to back that up! Bugis Street Bugis street is a covered arcade which in the old days was a street synomymous with the seedier side of Singapore life. Now it sells tons of designer clothing and jewellry ripoffs as well as a lot of food stalls selling everthing from pancakes to stinky Durian juice. Just as a side issue Durians smell so bad that they are actually banned from the MRT and busses in Singapore. Sim Lim Square Next stop was world famous Sim Lim square, a highrise department store catering for all sorts of electronics and computer products. The choice was stunning from the big names to unbranded ripoffs of the current trends. Chosing a shop to buy ... read more

Hi All I'm here in singapore for a 1 night stopover before heading to vietnam. The 13 hour flight from London wasn't that bad - I cannot praise Singapore Airlines enough for their level of service, food was fantastic and even got some sleep as the flight was pretty empty and i had 3 seats to myself! Their entertainment system is fab - movies, cd albums, radio, nintendo games and i even taught myself some vietnamese! Singapore is HOT!! and very sticky so was very glad to finally get to my hostel- the YMCA. didn't see any indians or builders but did have a very pleasant stay! food is great and the singaporeans are very friendly - normally you get grilled at immigration in any other country but here they offer you candy! Was a bit ... read more

Does chewing gum earn the death sentence? It's said that in Singapore you don't live in fear of crime, but live in fear of committing a crime and this reverberated through my mind as I came in through customs and immigration. Would I be executed for the one stick of gum buried deep in my bag? Perhaps the small amount of soil on my shoes would land me a hefty fine and jail sentence? Would I be deported before I even arrived? Actually Singapore airport was clean and efficient, and it was a breeze to get from there to the city using the MRT (tube). All this efficiency was a real culture shock after the beureaucratic bullshit that was Bali's Denpasar airport! Crossed Paths The New 7th Storey Hotel was my hay for the night. I ... read more

HMS Prince of Wales (Battleship, 1941-1941) HMS Prince of Wales, a 35,000-ton King George V class battleship built Birkenhead, England, was completed in March 1941. In late May, while still not fully operational, she was sent into action with the German battleship Bismarck and received significant damage from heavy gunfire. Following repairs, Prince of Wales carried Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. There, on 9-12 August, Churchill joined U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Atlantic Charter conference, the first meeting between the two English-speaking leaders of what was emerging as the "Grand Alliance" against the Axis powers. Following her return to British waters, Prince of Wales went to the Mediterranean, where she successfully engaged Italian planes off Malta in late September. Sent to the Far East with the battle cruiser HMS Repulse ... read more

Dive No. 5 - 17/05/06 - HMS Prince of Wales - Depth 58.8m Time 98-min - The SCS Trip I always intended getting down to this wreck, just to say I’d done it. As it happened it turned out to be the best dive I’ve ever done and also the deepest. Prior to the dive Jack gave us the practical dive planning lecture and we calculated our dive plan. Once again Jack led the dive down the shot line towards the stern or the up turned wreck. The shot line was fastened to inner most propshaft but fixed to the shot line by the wreck was the British Ensign which was tangled around the line. Jack took us around the 3 remaining propellers and ruder then to the area where the 4th propeller had broken its ... read more

Dive No. 3 - 16/05/06 - HMS Repulse Depth-50.0m Time 86-min This was the wreck that I think everyone was looking forward to diving, we had steamed all night to get there. We were awakened the next morning by Jack shouting briefing in 30 minutes. Normally this would not be welcomed but we'd all had an early night and being a dry boat, within the 30 minutes we were up on deck having had a light breakfast, ready for Jack's briefing. We were moored onto the stern of the wreck, to the inner starboard propeller shaft. The wreck is laid on her port (left) side, almost capsizing. At the briefing we were told under no circumstances were we to enter the wreck of were we to bring anything back to the surface because this was a ... read more

We're at Changi Airport in Singapore and waiting to board our plane. This airport is amazing! Indoor gardens, swimming pool, FREE internet, 24/7 shopping and food, a relaxation lounge and even free movies! I can't wait to be in transit here when I come back from Europe! Singapore was great!!! It felt longer than 3 nights...felt like 1 week! We did so much here! I went shopping last night and hence my suitcase is a kilo or so heavier. Prices in shops are comparable to Sydney while markets are cheap. Not super cheap like Manila but still cheap to buy a bit! I ended up getting about 5 t-shirts and a bag! Will need to wear a lot coming home or carry it on in my pockets! We went to Raffles Hotel last night and got ... read more
