Hi all, A different continent, same old blog!!! Welcome to Asia. Singapore is the place to come to with an empty suitcase!! Me. I'm not really a shopper, (unless I really need it!) but this place is sooooo cheap, especially at the moment as it's "The Big Singapore Sale" and the prices are really silly!! (Perhaps they are all the time but we won't be here long enough to find out!!) It's hot & humid and we leak like buckets, but everywhere is green, so clean and the people are fantastic, so friendly and helpful, even if we can't always understand them or they us, but that hasn’t happed very often! We’ve walked down Orchard Road, so many massive shopping malls, so much choice and bargaining is the order of the day, even if we didn't ... read more

Hello to you all. I hope your taking care of yourself. Anyway there was one more stop before Singapore, ‘Melaka’. It is going to be hard to talk about this place, as there was absolutely nothing to do, no interesting architecture, no beach, no shops. In fact it was like being in Maltby (for those of you not from Rotherham - this means a shit hole’. We just played a lot of snooker and ten pin bowling. The highlight must have been an apple crumble cheese cake I had for breakfast, and a very drunk Chinese albino who kept talking about a prostitute in Thailand called Nok (Potter is keeping an eye out for her). So to Singapore. What a city! Our transport there left us at the immigration point, when he should have taken us ... read more

Im just at Singapore airport waiting for my connecting flight to Amsterdam. My flight was good, was sitting next to an asian couple. Food was nice, except for a few agonising hours before dinner i was deliberating over whether to get the chicken with potatos and cream herb sauce or red thai beef curry with rice. Both had equal appeal to me, and i tried to spy on the people sitting behind me to see what the food looked like. Eventually I asked the hostess to suprise me and i got the beef curry. I was looking forward to the potatos though. Thats ok... more flights to come... We all got ice blocks and the asian man and I had a laugh when we went to take a bite and our lips stuck to the ice... ... read more

Hello from a very hot and sticky Singapore! Good flight with Singapore Airlines; Rik watched loads of films, Kiera watched Shrek and Shark Tale about 4 times each and I watched the Flight information map wishing the miles away!!! I managed to control my panic and lever my nails out of Riks leg after take off and the flight was fine, albeit long. Food not up to much - apparently designed by Gordan Ramsey..... When we landed the heat was about 30 degrees and hit us full force as soon as we stepped outside the airconditioned airport! Very humid and sticky, I had forgotten how pleasant it is to walk around dripping wet!!! We stayed at the Novotel on Clarke Quays which was beautiful and a bargain at 50 pounds per night (booked through internet on ... read more

We arrived in Singapore at about 11:30pm and were pleased to see that we could exit out the rear of the plane near where we were sitting. Quite lucky really that we didn’t queue up to sit in the front and fight the crowd when the doors opened. Singapore was hot and humid just like Hanoi, but somehow felt less so; maybe, we were just in a different frame of mind. The kids were zonked by the time we got our luggage and faced the prospect of finding a ride into the city. We had planned to take the light rail system into the city from the airport but of course the last train departed at 12:10am. We got through over to the main terminal from the new budget terminal that’s home to Tiger airlines at ... read more

So we have had 4 days in Singapore and what a difference!!! After I (H) got over the 24 hour bus journey (which was more than a little bumpy - thank god for a good bra!!) we explored a little and couldn't get over how clean everywhere was. Even the underground was immaculate. We used the underground quite a bit as it was really cheap and very efficient. Also a nice break from walking in the heat. We stayed at a youth hostel called The Inn Crowd. It was really nice with very friendly and helpful staff. It was my (H) first experience of sleeping in a dorm. I have to say it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but why do men have the inability to shut the toilet door!! The last thing I ... read more

Notes from Singapore I sit writing now on a plan bound for Sydney, reflecting on our experiences in Singapore. In many ways the first leg of our trip seems beyond real (part of me wants to say surreal, but that has become such a cliché, and this was not that if you know what I mean). We nearly had to change our plans at the last minute before leaving SA because our working visas for the UK were delayed, and only ended up getting our passports back the day we left. And packing up always takes longer than you think, so it was all quite rushed and frenetic towards the end, or the beginning as it were... Add to that a new country that is a very neat mix of a whole bundle of cultures and ... read more
