Today was a very, very fun day. My brother and I woke up early and got picked up by our uncle Louis to take us to downtown to swim. Then we went to Punggol Saffra McDonald’s for breakfast. (The McDonald’s in Singapore are much better than the ones in the US because the ingredients they use are fresher), next we went to the waterpark where the main attraction was a water bucket that fell down on us, therefore making it not very interesting. After the waterpark, we went back to downtown to swim in the lap pool and swim quite a bit of laps. My little brother played at the little playground with his friends. While he did that, I was bowling with the adults. I am not very good at bowling so I kind of ... read more

Woolly says – We’d sat over breakfast looking at the map, lots of museums still to see but we felt that we had been in so many something a little different was needed. We could cover some more temples, but we were templed out, Zoe suggested shopping and was swiftly outvoted which was when we came across something that doesn’t really feature in the guidebooks. Having plotted the metro route we were off, as the train raced through the dark I sat with my Mammoth Book of Facts reading about Haw Par Villa (formerly known as the Tiger Balm Garden) which is an 8.5 hectare Asian cultural park, the last of its kind in the world. Built in 1937, it was the brainchild of Aw Boon Haw, the millionaire philanthropist and marketing extraordinaire who gifted the ... read more

Woolly says – We’d decided on a slightly later start to the day, as I trotted to the metro the sun was blazing and I was grateful for the freezing temperatures of the carriages. Four short stops and we took the escalator upwards to find ourselves right under the strange three tired structure with a boat on top that we had seen earlier in the week. The casino at Marina Bay Sands encompasses more than 15,000 square meters of gaming space spread over 4 levels. Boasting one of the world's largest Swarovski crystal chandeliers, the casino is also home to over 600 table games, more than 1,500 slots and wasn’t on our agenda, it was however one of the most interesting buildings to look at and you had to wonder at how they had got the ... read more

Woolly says – The women had woken early, and information about our days events was still not forthcoming. I’d tried the direct line of questing and had even resorted to the underhand methods of asking but the only response I was receiving was ‘You’ll have to wait and see’, I tied sulking but that seemed to have no affect either. The only snippet I had gleamed was that the bus was going to Sentosa and as we passed through the city streets I just hoped that we weren’t spending the day at a health resort. Having booked several months ago I was really hoping that the surprize would be worth the moaning that was coming from my small companion. Woolly says – I reluctantly climbed down from the transport having considered refusing to get ... read more

Woolly says – Having decided to get breakfast on the run we’d headed straight onto the metro and into the financial district of Singapore, I’m not altogether sure how we manged that but with so many exits and a lack of signage it was an easy error to make. My tummy was screaming with hunger and having spied a bakery café I trotted through the door and settled myself comfortably, sadly for my tummy once Jo and Zoe had perused the menu we were quickly heading back outside. The city is expensive, very expensive but I was sure we could buy coffee and croissants for less than S$40 (approximately £20 GBP), we stood in the street studying our map having now idea which direction to head in when a nice young lady approached us ... read more

Woolly says – I woke to bright blue skies without a cloud in sight, having lost an hour on yesterday’s journey, I had checked everywhere in the room and suggested that we spent the day looking for it, Jo just laughed and told me that it was gone, and we had to manage without it, I felt lost without that extra hour in bed! The streets of Singapore where quiet, exceptionally clean and the whole place felt very bright, immense skyscrapers rose above my head as we disappeared into the depths of the metro system. It’s time to go home. If all goes to plan, it should take around 21 hours. We check in for our flight with enough time to visit the butterfly garden. I wonder what made someone think; ‘I know what this airport needs – butterflies’? It’s not surprising that Changi has been voted the best airport in the world 6 years in a row. Then it’s on to the 14 hour flight home for a musical extravaganza. After Moulin Rouge, School of Rock, Rocky Horror, Pitch Perfect 2 & 3 and two Paddingtons, we’re back in the UK. We have been around the world in 80 days, visiting 8 countries and covering a total of 39,000 miles. I’m exhausted – I think I need a holiday! ... read more

Our final day in Singapore, which is a shame because it’s a lovely city. But after almost 3 months on the road, I’m looking forward to going home tomorrow. I wake up with a bad back; the bed is incredibly hard so maybe I slept at a weird angle trying to get comfy. It hurts so much to bend, that the old man has to help me get dressed. He sets off to do East Coast parkrun, but I decide I’m not up to it and go back to bed. He returns some time later literally dripping wet. Running in near 28 degree heat is an extremely sweaty business. Once he has showered, we take a bus into town for one last sightseeing outing, starting with Esplanade Park home of Singapore’s iconic Merlion fountain, although it’s ... read more

We arrive in Singapore at 8 am. I’m too old for this overnight travel. Technically it’s 6 hours until we can check in, but I pray a room will be available sooner (if not I may cry). Unfortunately the hotel has no rooms before midday. It’s disappointing because we are tired and frankly quite stinky, but we decide to go and see some sights. Singapore, the ‘Garden City’ is a revelation after the filth and pollution of Sri Lanka. There are flowers on traffic islands, flowers on bridges, flowers on buildings, flowers everywhere. And no rubbish to be seen anywhere. We start at the Formula 1 pit lane, then cross the Helix Bridge to the ArtScience Museum. They have an exhibition on Art from the Streets which is very interesting. After lunch at the food court ... read more
