The arrival in Singapore was spectacular (in a low key sort of a way). Never having arrived here by sea both PP and CS were amazed at the extent and complexity of this port area. For over three hours after sun set we observed (from the observation deck, of course) the coastline brighten with millions of lights on all sides and when we suddenly stopped steaming and seemed to stop dead in the water we confirmed that the pilot was coming aboard, shimming up his rope ladder in accordance with protocol and shortly thereafter we were powering again. We got closer to land and proceeded smoothly through a vast labyrinth of port bays and facilities with many other vessels moving to and fro around us. Where were we actually headed - who was to know, but ... read more

Sunday 28 December and we are well into the Straits of Malacca, just abeam Port Dickson to be exact. The weather has been superb and the seas very busy since we first sighted tips of land on the Sumatra side yesterday. This morning we have been following the channel on the Malaysian side and seen long stretches of coastline, headlands and settlements to the left (port side). The Strait is teeming with shipping of all shapes and sizes. We recently overtook a heavily laden Maesk container vessel, going our way at about 12 knots or thereabouts. We have reduced speed to about 18 Knots and are expected to make Singapore by midnight. The captain assures us we can go ashore once immigration has done with us in the morning. Fingers crossed for that, as we are ... read more

After a month in Indonesia, Singapore was a paradise of organization and cleaningness... we spent 2 days there moving from shopping centre to shopping centre and not buying anything... Chinatown was great and the food tasty and cheap... Little India was spicy in many ways, it is the only place of the country (city?) where the rule of "no loitering" doesn't apply... Organization comes at a price and, in Singapore, everything is forbidden: no smoking, no loitering, no patronizing, no feeding the pigeons, not leaving the toilet without flushing, no cycling in bridges... or you'll get a fine... until recently it was even forbidden to chew gum on the street... The train ride to Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia was interesting as we were ridding backwards in a car full of screaming children... that's if you ask ... read more

At last, at last - departure! So much waiting and uncertainty then suddenly action. Ideas were generated and communicated over night and the plan to join the vessel ‘upstream’ so to speak, took shape. If delays meant it would not be in Singapore till late December why not go to her. And so we will. Sitting on the plane heading to Singapore our plan is to travel to Bangkok, Amman and Dubai the next day to arrive in Fujairah on 20 Dec by which time our ship should have extracted herself at last from Kandla and be nearing that UAE port herself. Two attractions, getting under way and having the fortuitous opportunity to catch up with old friends in UAE clinched it. Of course the notion of joining a ship in Singapore by flying via Jordan, ... read more

Hit Singapore last night after a 13 hour flight. It was rainging, good start!! Booked into a hotel and got a restless nights sleep. We have decided to get ourselves up to Thailand soon as, it's well clammy down here. I will be needing a wet wipe of Lorraine in a minute as I am swaeting all over. You know the score. We are both quite tired still but we have booked our train up to Kuala Lumpar on the sleeper so that's a nights accomodation and travle in one, sweet child o'mine. We are both a little bewildered as it is day one but we have met another couple already and are going for a beer. Just to cool down you understand. Signing off for now but will have more going on one we are ... read more

When we arrived at Changi airport on Thursday evening we were very excited, after the eight hour flight from Cairns we were tired but we'd been looking forward to this part of our trip for so long we were on a natural high. As we went through the airport to get our passports stamped we saw two Buddhist monks in their bright orange robes, we couldn't help but stare and be glad that finally, once again, there was something to stare at. We then got the super sleek underground train straight to Chinatown, where we planned to stay. We arrived at our station and as the escalator brought us out into the open we were welcomed by the sight of a hundred Chinese lanterns and beautifully carved buildings. The streets were full of bustling market stalls ... read more

Well after India Sinpapore was definately a welcome sight!!, Not that we didnt enjoy India but a Western...ized City was required!! Whilst Delhi and Singapore are only 4 1/2 hrs apart they may as well be on different planets!! Singapore was great, we stayed in a hotel called The Scarlett...we were told by our friend Jenny " it is the trendiest hotel in town"!! and it was excellent...have a look at their web site!! The location was great, only 1/2 hour stoll to all the sites & Orchard road (main drag)... There are two things that the locals do very well....1) Shopping....huge shopping malls, all air conditioned. 2) Eat....I have never seen so many restaurants, almost always busy what ever time of day or night.... We only had 3 full days so had to go full ... read more

Well everyone, its been a while since the boys posted a blog and they figured they better before leaving Asia, so here it goes. After a few days in Koh Tao spent on the beach and mini-golfing, the boys decided that since they weren't diving it was time to get moving to the next island in line, Koh Phangan, home of the infamous full moon parties. Unfortunately they boys missed the full moon by a couple weeks, but luckily there was a blackmoon party (don't ask them what the significance of a black moon is, it was just an excuse to drink buckets). They even met some Swedish guys to go to the party in the back of a truck with. The next few days were spent recovering, but they did manage to meet a group ... read more

Short update on first day. After walking around and going to sleep I was woken up by a drunk Aussie returning from the pub crawl at 2am, I wasn't really asleep so it wasn't such an issue, she informed me it was her last night and she was buying beer for everyone and that I should partake! I'm not one to turn down a free beer and thought it best to join the merry gang! Cue going to bed at 6am after meeting 15/ 20 other travellers and exchanging stories and tips et al. A good time was had :) Day Two Singapore is a rich mans playground and a shopping haven for the demented! Spraulling skyscrapers with dozens more in the making, massive hotels everywhere catering for the rich and prosperous and shopping centre after ... read more
