I left Australia today after almost three weeks. It’s the longest I’ve been in another country so far. I can think of few countries where I could say that and still wish I’d be there longer. My day in Darwin was less adventurous than expected. This morning I did my weekly check-in back home and finally finished getting caught up on postings. I also went to the Parliament House to check on tours. They only do guided tours on Saturdays so I was SOL. I did a self guided tour but found the information that was provided to be a bit too timeline oriented and detailed for someone unaware of the city's and territory's basic past and current state of affairs. I had really hoped to learn more about the latter. My interest unsatisfied, I later ... read more

We left the hotel in Kuala Lumpur and jumped on a bus back to the airport...we got here early as we wanted to see if we could change the flights for India it appeared that this was not to be and they can't change them :( We will keep trying to sort that one out and see how we go with what's going to make India work better for us. After checking in on the little machine at the airport ourselves we drop off our bags and off we go to sit and relax for a while then head through the gates as soon as we can....find a spot to use the free wifi at the airport ;) While we are waiting for the flight we chat with a guy from Adelaide he has lived ... read more

Hello! This was our first stop in Asia. Temperature: 30 degrees. As soon as we arrived, we headed for our first salsa night in Union Square and guess what, a live band was playing! We went back the next day after a walk in town. The people were friendly and welcoming, level excellent. We had great dances with the local dancers and also got a chance to admire some unexpected visitors (Neeraj and Baila Society). We spent the rest of the night exploring the city, smoking chicha in the Arabic quarter and eating local food until early morning. No waste of time sleeping, it was time to pack up for ... Singapore is like nowhere else we've visited in South East Asia. The zero tolerance to crime results in a country that is extremely safe and super clean and with English being one of the four national languages (along with Chinese, Indian and Malay) communication rarely caused a problem; a welcome change. The pace of life here is definitely faster, with the busy subways and malls resembling a western society more so than an Asian one. In saying that, a visit to Chinatown or Little India, where the streets are lined with food stalls, Bollywood music blasts out from tiny shops and the smell of incense wafts through the air; you feel right back in the heart of Asia. Singapore has somehow successfully adopted and merged the positive attributes of western and Asian life to create a ... read more

We spent most of the day in Singapore'S Chinatown. How can Singapore have a Chinatown given 60% of the population is ethnic Chinese? Well, when colonial Singapore was established by Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company, the native population was not Chinese but Malay. However, the new colony attracted many Chinese immigrants. Raffles directed that sections of the town be set aside for the different ethnic groups, including the Chinese immigrant. Read more about it here. At the bottom of this page is a photo of one the signature foods of Singapore...Hainanese Chicken Rice. To learn more about this dish, click on the following link for a video clip of Anthony Bourdain's visit to this "hawker center" and this same stall. Then back to the hotel to relax. We cruised into Singapore on Halloween—one of the few places in the world where it is not a big celebration yet. The ship’s staff had a pumpkin carving contest on the pool deck right before we docked at the container pier. The cruise ship terminal was fully booked but since Regent provides free shuttles in most ports, it was not a problem getting into the city. Later that evening the Mariner moved to the passenger terminal which is located between Sentosa Island and the main island of Singapore. We like Singapore a lot and feel it gets kind of a bum rap as being boring. Some say it is like one big theme park. Everyone has heard the stories of strict gum chewing laws and caning for minor infractions. We have found it to be a ... read more

Okay... I'm still alive! I have been trying to write an update every few days but something always seems to crop up What a whirlwind time that has been. .. Quite literally. The day after the last blog Tokyo was hit by a typhoon which was interesting to say the least - I can never work out the difference between a typhoon, hurricane or just a big storm but this one was a typhoon. Typhoon 18 to be exact - no names for them in Japan. I sat in the lobby of the hotel all night actually, doing some email and watching as the water level rose and came over the pavement. Even the Japanese guys at the hotel were a little suprised at the scale of it, so they went to bed. Chatted with a ... read more

Day Three October 4, 2009 We awoke at 7:30am which is very early for us especially on a Sunday. Of course the first thing I thought about was that one of our kids may be trying to reach us via skype so we turned on our computer and sure enough hooked up with Jared and Laura who are celebrating their one year anniversary in Puerto Rico. We had a great conversation with them, skype is amazing if any of you are looking for a free way to communicate over the Internet with voice and picture. We enjoyed breakfast in the lobby and decided that we would head to Chinatown for the morning. Chinatown is a very large area of Singapore with shops and stalls through out the area. Restaurants, and food markets selling foods that we ... read more

It was warm and humid just like the previous days…I reluctantly got up from bed, took a bath, and sluggishly ate my breakfast. Though I woke up feeling a little bit down, I definitely don’t want to spend my last day moping around. I spent most of the morning lounging at the reception area, thinking of which places I could still manage to visit before my flight later in the evening. I was awakened a few times during the night ... or maybe dawn … by noises of roommates packing and people chatting at the reception area, but the place was fairly quiet and empty when I went out to get my breakfast later in the morning. Yesterday, I was to see my Aunt who I haven’t seen in two (or three?) years so we can ... read more
