aaaij! Intussen zitten we alweer compleet ergens anders: borneo, in maleisie!

(I don't have a cable for my photos so photos will follow) Fri 5th Jan After I had finished writing my last email I went to the hotel that we had to meet at the next day and asked if anyone had checked in. A lady called Mellinda had and so I went and knocked on her door and aranged to meet the next morning. I then had a disarster trying to get back to the hostel as I got on the right bus but didn't recognise where to get of and the driver didn't tell me (prob didn't understand when I asked). So I ended up back in town!! Lucky it was a circular route. When lady realised I was stuck she ended up walkingme all the way back to my hostel. It was so ... read more

4th -My last day in Australia I spent at Bondi Beach meeting a friend from home- Peter. He had come form asia a couple of months ago so he told me all the best places he went. We also did a 2 hour walk with him, his cousin and his friend around the headland I forgot this was the plan and had turned up to the first sunny day in a while wearing tracsuit bottoms ready for the night flight! It ended up being a bit of a rush to get to the airport but of course once I got there I still had to que for ages to check in. My first flight to Kula Lumpur was long and I was stuck right in the middle of the middle row so had to climb over ... read more

After a 17 hour ferry from Zamboanga, I made it to Malaysia. The first city I arrived in was Sandakan. It is a normal, grid style city. Not too big, not too small. It served as a good port to get acclimated to the differences of Malaysia. One immediate thing I noticed was that it is much more conservative than the Philippines. The people were friendly, but less likely to come up to you and just start talking. The food is good. It’s a blend of Malay, Indian, and Chinese. Lots of curries, flatbreads and soups. There’s a good amount of variety to keep your palate interested. When in Sandakan I did not do too much. The big outing from there was to the Sepilok Orangutan rehabilitation center, which is only an hour bus ride ... read more

We took an early flight to Kota Kinabalu or KK as it is known here. We called Bal's mum Rena and said hi we are here! sorry we arrived unannounced, but Rena was very happy to come and pick us up from the airport. first impressions of KK were wonderful the people here are amazing.... Spent one night with Rena at her new house, which has just been built in the hills, the second day we went to her local market and she showed us the true art of bartering. Stayed a night in KK city house with Rena, then caught a vey fast bumpy, winding bus to Sandakan. pictures of KK below and Rena's house for Bal to see......... read more

The morning we finished Mt. Kinabalu we headed to the hot springs in Poring, not a joke - it was really called Poring Hot Springs. The legs were definitely in need of some R and R and the springs did the job. We travelled with Frances the friendly taxi driver who'd taken us to Poring the previous day. Over two days he seemed to magically appear whenever we needed a taxi... "Ah, where you going today?". He brought us back to Ranau found us an internet cafe and introduced us to the staff in Double Luck restaurant! Afterwards, he strolled up to us as we were waiting on a bus to Sandakan. He must have known the bus would be full. Gordon and I plus an English couple ended up hiring him for the 200km journey ... read more

When we arrived at Mt Kinabalu park on Monday afternoon the mountain was covered in cloud. The next morning after a night in luxury accommodation (because there was nothing else available), we saw the full height of the mountain and wondered what we were getting ourselves into. We grouped together with an English couple to share a guide - you can't climb without a guide. Our guide was called Wilbert and he had a voice like Barry White, quite funny for a small Malaysian. The way it works is you climb the mountain over two days. On the first day, you set off early in the morning and reach the resthouse below the summit after 4 to 6 hours climbing. You get some sleep in the resthouse and usually head for the summit in the dark ... read more

From KL we flew to Sabah in Malaysian Borneo (Borneo is divided into 2 parts, that owned by Malaysia and that owned by Indonesia). We are here predominantly for the wildlife and diving and so headed straight for a tour operator to book our excursions for our week-long stay. On their instruction, we left for Sepilok the next morning which took 6 hours on the bus and past the stunning Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in SE Asia. We wanted to climb to the summit but sadly there were no spaces while we were there (G suspects Nat is quietly pleased!). Sepilok is an area of protected rain forest that is home to the Worlds most renowned Orang Utan Preservation Centre. At this sanctuary, you can see Orangs at various stages of rehabilitation being fed and ... read more

Clambering down from the rickety base-camp bunk-bed, I turn off the 2am alarm and wonder vaguely what was going through my mind when I packed for this trip. Already shivering in the frigid early morning air, I blearily consider my woefully inadequate clothing options. Let me sum it up for you like this: I'm about to climb to the summit of the highest mountain in South East Asia and I don't even have dry underwear to put on. A t-shirt still wet from yesterday's climb, a pair of light running shoes, a thin jumper, rain-jacket, quick-dry travel trousers, a beanie, gloves & a make-shift scarf (the bandanna I used in India to filter out road-dust) complete my rag-tag ensemble. The up-side is that I don't have to decide what to wear; I just put on every ... read more

Mat: Mount Kinabalu is Sabah's biggest draw card. Its tall, its climbable, there are fantastic views, lots of people give it a crack. We did. Standing at 4095m it is a good head taller than Mt Cook in NZ (3764m). Being in the tropics however means that any punter with an urge to walk straight up and straight down in two days can have a go. I don't really know what proportion of people actually get to the top, but someone mentioned it was only 50/50. You have to hire a guide in case it turns nasty, but compared with something like Mt Cook, Mt Kinabalu is just a big goofy labrador. At the summit the coldest it normally gets is 0 degrees. Sooo, we stayed at park headquarters on the night of the 3rd of ... read more
