Diving still incredible! Dived at different islands of Mabul and Kapalai yesterday, which was macro muck diving - very different from the pretty corals of Sipadan - lots of sand, wrecks, and random large objects and rocks to look under which was very fun. Saw completely different types of fish - crocodile fish, HUGE cuttlefish, massive groupers (literally twice the size of me) and the weird looking stonefish, frogfish, leaf fish and pipefish - very cool! Today was my last day of diving at Sipadan - was a fantastic day and one of the dives was the BEST dive I've done here so far - more sharks than I've ever seen in my life, they were literally everywhere! And turtles gliding around every direction you look, and even saw a big school of squid mating - ... read more

Am now in Semporna, on the east coast of Sabah (the Malaysian part of Borneo) diving at world famous Sipadan Island with my friend Mel, who has been working as a divemaster here for the last 6 weeks. First day of diving was on my birthday (great way to spend a birthday!) and the first dive was at the top dive site of Barracuda Point - in the first 10 minutes we were surrounded by a school of about 200 huge barracudas, circling in a frenzy, and next to them were about 8 huge grey reef sharks, with a hammerhead shark in the distance. Currents were strong and it was my first proper dive for ages, ended up diving very deep, so needless to say I was slightly pooing myself and breathing up my air pretty ... read more

Kat writes: After jigging along on a local bus for an hour we reach our destination Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and it is so worth the journey. A centre, on the edge of protected jungle, where they rehabilitate orphaned Orangutan's with the aid of WWF UK. They teach them everything, even how to climb and then send them back out to the wild. Unfortunately the centre had just suffered a major blow- at the beginning of the month a monsoon totally destroyed their tourist viewing platforms. This is where Orangutans that they have released come back if they want to for food. Some can never fend for themselves and return everyday after their release and some they never see again! Despite the missing platforms people were still turning up, including us, so they opened up ... read more

Kat writes: So we decided to hop on a plane in KL and just over 3 hours later we were here to check out Borneo Malaysia. The place of mystery, full of dense jungle bursting with wildlife including the endangered Bornean Orangutan and the Sumatran Rhinoceros (and if you've ever seen the movie 'Anaconda' - man eating snakes!) Well, it’s not quite 'full' of jungle any more - commerce, logging and palm oil plantations are seeing to that but it is still a beautiful and mysterious country. Sabah's capital We landed in Kota Kinabalu, a Malay lad about our age was sitting next to me on the plane, so we shared a cab with him into town and he gave us the quick low down on the area. Sweet. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of one ... read more

I'm sure there's a great quote for it but I can't find the perfect one yet. Essentially what contributed to more than half of this trip being as enjoyable as it was-hands down, the company. Michael (another international student that lives on my floor) and I caught an evening flight to Kota Kinabalu (KK) on Tuesday. Before my trip I had phoned a friend back home, who'd spent some time in Malaysia, for advice varying from what to do and where to stay. She told me all that I asked and more but what we hadn't predicted became fates way of connecting us to an unforgettable experience. Before we left for our trip we didn't exchange any currency since we planned on withdrawing Ringits (the local currency) at the airport. Upon arrival, we found that the ... read more

So the trip starts once again. After landing in back in Borneo I decided not to rough it and checked into the Hyatt to have a relaxing day or two before attemting this 4100m mountain. Room service of steak and chips helped me settle back into the Malay way of life. I was severley jet lagged but had no choice to climb it two days after my arrival since the mountain accomoation was fully booked until the end of October. I left KK at 7am on Monday for the mountain. I hooked up with an English mountaineer to do the climb with and share the cost of the guide. The first day climb was the hardest and we managed to do it in about 3 and a half hours. Not bad as the average is 5 ... read more

Wotto people how the devil are ya?? Well when a certain Mr Axle W Rose stated "welcome to the jungle we'll have fun and games" he wasnt wrong!! After our amazing time in KL we landed in the east of borneo on the 5th of october. the flight was good and it was great to fly over an island of jungle. to be fair personally the whole thing had not quite kicked in and i wasnt really prepared for what we had in store but it was amazing. we ended up at sandakan airport about lunchtimeish and got a taxi to our operations base 30 mins from the airport. this was the the offices of UNkle Tans Wildlife adventures. it was nice to go from a bustling city to the borneo courtyside and there was a ... read more
