Hey guys! Well I did it!! I climbed Mt Kinabalu. This massive mountain is half the size of Mt Everest “Standing 4,095 metres (13,432 ft) high, it is the highest mountain in South East Asia. With its granite massif dominating the surrounding landscape at the peak, it is often shrouded in mists and clouds. Mount Kinabalu has an awesome mystique all its own. No wonder that long ago, the Kadazan-Dusuns named it ‘Aki Nabalu’ or “home of the spirits of the dead’.” The bus picked me up from my hotel as 7am and it was a two hour drive out to the National Park, but luckily for me, my Malaysian lady driver was sexy. In my bag I had lots of warm clothes, a raincoat, torch and spare shoes which made it very heavy. I was ... read more

After Jenny accomplished the amazing feat of Mt Kinabalu, we decided to have a relaxing day on the beach. We headed out to the ferry terminal to wait. They don’t have schedules for the ferries, they wait for enough people to fill a boat and then send it out. Such an unordered system, and stuffed up the count, sent other people on the ferry we were supposed to be on, and we ended up waiting nearly 40 minutes instead of about 15! On the ferry the give you a life jacket, and the driver scoops water out of the bottom of the boat while steering with a plastic bucket. But since I am actually writing this blog, we obviously survived the trip without dieing a slow a horrible drowning death in the middle of the ocean. ... read more

Well what a crazy time we have had here so far. We flew from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur for one night, and stayed near the airport, paying $40 for a room which was just as basic as the $5 room we are staying in now, and then flew out the next morning to Kota Kinabalu, in Borneo. Only things weren’t quite that easy. We somehow managed to miss the flight. We realized we were standing in an international line for check-in but it was a domestic flight. So we found domestic, looked at our watches and realized that the flight was due to take off in 3 minutes! So we had missed our flight and had to forfeit our seats. We had to buy new tickets!! Luckily it was only about $100 each for the flight, ... read more

(Matthew) As often seems to be the case, we're writing two travel blogs back to back. Borneo has been a very busy place for us but it's been a lot of fun so i haven't minded. as i'm typing, we're sitting in the state library in Kota-Kinabalu. the internet here is cheaper than at the other places in town. plus it's nice and quiet. we left Brunei and caught an express boat to Kota Kinabalu. we had a fairly uneventful journey with only one stop. we arrived and went to check the places that Danny (from Brunei) recommended us to stay. the first place we checked was packed so we went to the second option. the lady there told us that she was all out of rooms for men and only had women dorm rooms left. ... read more

When we walk down the gangplank this morning, a colorfully dressed Malaysian woman greets me by putting a necklace over my head. Alan gets one too. Our Radisson tour, "Borneo Extravaganza" is about to begin. Our guide, Vicki, begins the tour by giving us background information on Kota Kinabalu. Now I know why there are so many modern buildings here. The city was destroyed during WWII. Soon, the bus passes the city mosque which is a replica of the Taj Mahal. This white building, with blue tiled roof, can accommodate 10,000 worshipers. There is no photo stop so we don’t get any pictures of the beautiful building. Our drive continues on a road that has been built upon land reclaimed from the sea. In fact, the entire area of new buildings is built on reclaimed land ... read more

“We are skipping the port of Sandakan, Borneo, Malaysia,” the Captain announces over the loudspeaker. He explains that we will pass too close to a number of palm islands where pirates can hide and easily attack us. Capt. Dag has chosen a wider path through the ocean which will increase our sailing time. So, we spend an extra day at sea and arrive one-half day earlier in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo. There always seems to be a silver-lining when our cruising plans are changed. The late afternoon arrival gives us beautiful views of the northern coast of Borneo. Alan and I sit on our balcony watching tree covered islands with long, sandy beaches and isolated resorts pass by. It’s a relaxing way to spend a cloudy afternoon but the gray day means no picture taking. At 6:00pm ... read more

(sorry folks, it's my longest blog yet, as it's been a busy couple of weeks - once again, you have been warned - enjoy.) I have often mentioned in passing to people that I will be visiting Borneo, and the reply is usually "Ah, cool, that's great, right yeh...........where?". Relative to other destinations, Borneo is less well known or is seen as this mysterious land, but sadly or not (an argument not worth getting into here), is slowly being 'discovered' by the backpacking community as a stunningly beautiful and diverse region. The northern part of the island, formerly known as Malaysian Borneo is run by the same Government as Peninsular Malaysia and includes Sarawak to the south-west and Sabah to the north-east. Ultimately, it shares the world's 3rd biggest island with Indonesia Kalimantan and the black-gold ... read more
