To kick start this entry, I doubt this applies to many, but your patience has paid off waiting for some photos, as I've gone a little crazy and added over 30 of the little blighers to my previous blog. If you thus fancy seeing even more mountains, or a car-destroying parrot, just click that 'previous entry' buttom above. I figured, as this will be the last set of photos I can upload until I next put some on CD, I thought I'd treat you lucky lucky people. So where did I finish last time? Something about looking forward to saying hello to Penguins I think. From Dunedin I went on a long nature tour to the nearby Otago Peninsula, renowned for its amazing wildlife, besides a huge 20km natural harbour. While soaking up all the facts ... read more

Hello everyone. I have finally managed to find the time (and effort) to email you all! It has been about 6 weeks since we left England so there is a lot of news. So, we landed in Bangkok on the 6th Nov. Isn’t the nicest of places, lots of pollution, very hot and too many tourists. We stayed for a couple of days until Joe caught his flight to Australia. Most of that time was spent celebrating the beginning of the travels. Anyway when we got rid of Joe we booked a bus to Chang Mai (12 hour journey) and also a trek. We intended on having a days rest to recover from the journey, but when arrived we were persuaded to go on the trek straight away. We jumped on a small truck and headed ... read more

After arriving all by ourselves by means of local transport, odd translations (andrew has been trying to use his very basic Indonesian which considering we are in Malaysia led to some questionnable results), a lot of please and thank yous and smiles (they go a long way here - a bit like a short skirt and a low top for lara back home) we arrived in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo. Very cheap and picturesque (dining by the harbour with millions of little islands around us). There was an interesting Phillipino Market on the harbour although selective use of the senses was required to a) avoid the rats and b) avoid lara seeing the rats. As usual she outsmarted me and i was marched to the nearest harbour dining spot with candles Little did she realise though ... read more

Left Phuket for Kuala Lumpar, then straight down to Kota Kinabalu. From here transfer to Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia's first world heritage site. Night before arriving here, we had to eat in some dodgy little café and ended eating "nightmare chicken"! This chicken was disgusting, gristle and bone, and literally had one piece each before sacking it off. Come bedtime and the nightmares start! Really vivid ones for both me and arnie and it was clearly from that chicken! Owner must have seen the Westerner's and decided to play some games! Anyway the time had come for Mt Kinabalu, got all our kit sorted and started the climb along with some Swedes and a couple of other guys. Night before we had a brief where they basically said that it was monsoon season and chances are ... read more

In my last entry, I mentioned that we were staying in the Cameron Highlands (Malaysia). I went to the highlands with my Dutch buddy Jeroen (who is doing the rest of the trip with me) and a friend we met in Langkawi named Sarah. In the highlands we saw a tea plantation, tea factory, strawberry farm, honey bee farm, rose garden, Chinese temple, butterfly farm, and some great scenery! The weather was quite cold (15C), and on the last couple days it was pissing rain. Since there wasn't much to do in the rain, we ended up sitting on our butts indulging in DVD's and home-made cake! Our next stop was Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. When we arrived we were craving a little bit of exercise after our lazing around in the highlands, so ... read more

Borneo is home to some of the most spectacular jungles in the world and has hundreds of species of wildlife. Since we were there, we tried to find an opportunity to stay in the jungle overnight to see the many species of monkeys, crocodiles, wild cats, birds, elephants, boars, and of course - mosquitoes. We found a jungle camp that takes people to a remote section of the jungle that is inaccessible otherwise. The camp offered jungle boat cruises (both day and night). On the first day, we took the boat down the Kinabatangan River, which is famous for its diverse and dense population of wildlife. Within the first few minutes, we saw Proboscis monkeys leaping from tree to tree. These monkeys are some of the funniest looking creatures I have ever seen. They all have ... read more

The scuba diving and crocodile hunting put us into a fairly adventurous mood, so we decided to climb the highest mountain in south east Asia. Mount Kinabalu stands 4,095.2 meters above sea level. To put this in perspective, it is about half the height of Everest, and a little bit higher than Mt. Robson (highest mountain in Canada). The great thing about Mt. Kinabalu is that you don’t need ice axes and crampons to reach the summit - it is right near the equator and there is no snow! We arrived at the national park below the mountain to book accommodation at the base camp, obtain a permit to climb to the summit, and to hire a guide. Once this was all taken care of, we had an early night in a little wooden shack full ... read more

Well,... you do it once and you think it was a bad idea... you do it twice and you start to worry about your sanity! I'm talking about climbing great big, huge mountains for absolutely no reason whatsoever! I flew from KL to Kota Kinabalu (KK) on Tuesday 25th October. Note to self - never fly Air Asia without coming prepared. I sat on the 2 and a half hour flight with very little food... oh no! But what made it even worse was that some of the passengers were given food... I looked up at the flight attendant expectantly and he told me that he could sell me something (?!) I said, "no thanks"... than about an hour later when the other passengers had finished their (half decent looking) food, and I had worked myself ... read more
