The big highlight of our trip is a weeks tour of Sabah which is the northern part of Borneo. So I'm this is quite a long blog as it we saw and did quite a bit. We joined a tour company which first off took us to Kota Kinabalu (KK) the main town/city of Sabah. The first leg of the tour involved a day on 'Sapi Island'. This is a small tropical island just out from KK. This was a great day as we both snorkeled for most of it and saw some pretty cool stuff that we've only ever seen in aquariums before, such as puffer fish, parrot fish, clown fish, and lots of other really cool fish i don't know the names of. However we did pay a price for this because as true ... read more

PRE-TRIP "Hey, any plans for the March holidays? Shall we do something interesting?" "Sure! What do you suggest?" "What about let's climb Mount Kinabalu? We've got 3 months to prepare for it!" "That's quite an idea! Why not?" That happened in December 2002. 4 of us, therapists at a special school, decided to plan and train for the trip to conquer Mount Kinabalu. However, between December to March, we only managed to do a little 3 hour hike as part of our training programme. I came down with a bad flu about 2 weeks before the trip. The rest of the time, we were all too caught up with things happening in school. 3 weeks before "Have you done any research?" "Nope, I just booked the ticket for us with Air Brunei" "Do we need ... read more

Mount Kinabalu stands as the highest peak in Malaysia and more impressively is the tallest mountain between the Himalayas and South America. Being the 'Mountain that anyone can climb' (according to the guide book) means it attracts around fifty people a day to attempt to climb to its rather impressive 4100m sumit. We had booked our climb date in KK when we first arrived in Sabah, but due to the waiting list it ended up being the last thing we did before leaving for Singapore. We arrived at the national park headquaters the night before our climb and stayed in the park overnight ready for an early start. We began our ascent at around nine thirty am, it started as a rather refreshing morning stroll, oh if only we had known how much more there was ... read more

Nothing much to say really, booked Air Asia flight to KLIA from KK.Dep 6am arr 8:30am. Jeffry and Jaqui (dive instructor and his divemaster partner who I met at Sipadan) also leaving the same time. Went to Kian Son waterfall - not a spot known to tourists and I'm not going to say where it is or how to get there. Three tiered waterfall with pools to swim in - no other backpackers just a dozen or so locals with their kids. Quiet and relaxing..nice way to chill and spend the day. Got back around 4:30 just in time to get my gear together and off to the mosque. As promised went up onto the roof and then into one of the minarettes for a birds eye view..again got some nice shots which are featured on ... read more

Arrived 6am at KK totally stuffed back to Tropicana lodge and bed for three hours. Ran into the birdwatchers from DV had lunch said goodbyes - nice bunch.. Off to the state mosque at 5ish to catch the sunset - was well chuffed as I was allowed inside and got tentative permission to take photographs inside as well as out, finally getting an invite to return the next day to get some photographs from atop one of the minarets. Decided to dep Sabah on the 18th.... read more

4:55am and my morning alarm call has roused me from my slumbers right on cue...must thank my friends at the mosque but I think they forgot the coffee and croissants I ordered. The boat pushed off 9am only ten or so of us and a couple of snorkellers. First stop white tip avenue - max dive time was 52 minutes and the max depth reached was 21m. Turtles, turtles and more turtles...green, loggerhead and hawksbills - sleeping on the coral, swimming under us, towards us, over us and past us....fish..? too many species to mention in every colour on the charts and from tiny to immense. On the surface between dives the turtles are popping up to mate, swimming under the boat....we all got back in for a snorkel to pass the time. Unfortunately I left ... read more

Kuala Lumpur is a great place to start a trip around Malaysia. You get to top up your fast food and shopping levels, chill out in air conditioned cafes and use the cheapest post rates, we have found so far, to send home the next lot of accumulated junk. Besides our trip to the Petronas Towers (the building used in the film 'Entrapment') our time in the capitol was fairly relaxed and uneventful, exactly what we needed before flying to Sabah (northern Borneo) where relaxation didn't even come into the equation! Never on our original list of destinations, Sabah is one of those places which is a hot topic of conversation on the current travellers grape vine. A must for anyone thinking of going to Malaysia, it has everything from the oldest virgin rainforests in the ... read more

Choked down my breakfast after settling up my bill 348RM.... I know it's not a lot in ozzie dollars but I have another two and a half months to go in SE Asia so this did kind of blow the budget a little...however, it can be absorbed, it was a very quiet and peaceful two nights and I met an entertaining group of bird watchers on holiday from Oz and Malaysia. Caught a minibus from Lahad Datu to Semporna a town described along the lines of the following blurb...."a jewel of a city with its feet in the sea..." What? First impressions for most people..? A dirty, stinking toilet of a place. Absolutely disgusting and no mistake either. The reason people come here is to dive Palau Sipadan and with good reason - it's listed genuinely ... read more

Up at 6:30am went for a walk to take some photographs - it's already hot and humid and mist is hanging over the whole area giving the scene a lost world kind of feel. Danum Valley(DV) is of course low lying - hence "valley" dickhead so it's not going to be cool like highland rainforest... "Negotiate" our room rates with the rude little nazi administrator. 66RM!! for a dorm bed.....plus an unepected bonus 30RM for the park entry fee in addition to the transfer costs and meals. Chalk that one up to experience. The thing that is hard to stomach is the two tiered pricing structure for Malays and non-Malays (we pay up to 10X more). Consider throwing the other guy to an angry ape. Went off on a couple of short walking trails but didnt ... read more
