Hello again! It's our last night on Borneo - tommorrow we head back to KL, to finish seeing Malaysia - so I thought I'd waste some valuable sleeping time bragging about what we've been up to. Last entry we were heading off to Mulu National Park, back in Sarawak. That was actually quite cool - I was half expecting it to be a bit crap, in all honesty, but it wasn't - as it is still the rainly season (just about) there aren't too many tourists over here yet, which makes everything that little bit more relaxed. Anyway, Mulu is home to masses of caves, most of which seem to be linked, although they havn't explored even half of them yet, apparently. There is one vast one, called Deer Cave, which is the 'biggest limestone cave ... read more

After climbing Mount Kinabalu, we decided to head for some relaxation at the Poring Hot Springs, approximately an hour or so away from Kinabalu National Park. Sofia and Phillip, our Swedish companions, were lucky to be able to book a room at Poring last minute and after we all piled into a taxi and took a gorgeous drive through what seemed like the Borneo foothills, we arrived at Poring Hot Springs park, which was quite different than what any of us expected. We were greeted by the parks rangers who are all nicely dressed beautiful women (must be a hiring prerequisite for some reason ... kind of like Earls restaurants back home). After settling down in our room, we were all eager to get some laundry done from our sweaty adventures at the mountain and to ... read more

Hello everyone, we have been having a great time in Sabah and the weather has been outstanding ... even the locals that we meet tell us how lucky we have been! When we first arrived in Kota Kinabalu (KK), we immediately set-up a trip to Mount Kinabalu and the Poring Hot Springs. We spent a few days relaxing in the bustling provincial capital of KK, where we took in some pre-festivities to the approaching Chinese New Year, shopped around the Filipino market, and finally met Jennee, a friend of a former collague who has been our personal tour guide for KK! So, we set off to Kinabalu National Park and spent a night at the base of Mount Kinabalu before making our ascent. During the first night, we met an extremely friendly couple from Sweden, Sofia ... read more

Jeffery was a guy from Singapore and a little older than us, he had a huge welcoming smile and a unique dress sense to say the least; he would wear the tackiest tourist T-Shirts that would advertise various places in Borneo, he wore these with very loud shorts and a NY Yankees baseball cap. That evening he bought us loads of drinks from the Fridge in the front room and later on he produced some Vodka from somewhere and we started on that. We talked about everything from Football to the pysique of Singaporeans and their paranoia at being surrounded by Muslim countries. Jeffery had been in the army, in a section very strong for the region although he wouldn't specify which one. Jeffery told us that tomorrow he would take us out to places most ... read more

Quick entry (not many of these so be grateful) of a few of our underwater camera shots from Borneo and the Ningaloo Reef in WA. Just don't ask us what any of the fish or coral actually are! Should have some more soon as we've nearly finished another camera... ... read more

Sabah is one of the 13 states that make up Malaysia, together with the capital district of Kuala Lumpur (KL). Along with the other Malaysian state Sarawak, Indonesia and Brunei, it makes up Borneo, the third largest island in the world. Both Sabah and Sarawak were independent colonies before joining Malaya in 1963, and even today they retain more autonomy than the other states. The capital city of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu (or KK) where Raleigh Fieldbase is situated. Sabah, otherwise known as ‘The Land Below the Wind’, has a beautiful and dramatic landscape, and some fascinating ethnic communities, flora and fauna. The state is well known for its incredible natural features and varied terrain, which includes everything from swampy, mangrove tangled coastal areas, to gorgeous sandy beaches and coral reefs, through dazzling green paddy fields ... read more

Welcome to the jungle! Angenehme Temperaturen ... read more

And at every other time of the day with the Borneo Divers Mabul Resort, where we have been staying for the past few nights. The resort is incredible ... to give you an idea, we have not worn footwear, except for our diving fins, since we have arrived. We literally walk around the small Mabul island that the resort is located on to the dive shop, boat, our chalet style room, the beach, the pool, or to the dining area, which is the best damn grub we have had all trip (yes, it has gotten better with time; but mainly because this time its buffet three meals a day, and you work up a big appetite doing the amount of diving we have been doing). Its been absolutely amazing scuba diving, especially at Sipidan Island, an ... read more

Our time in Borneo was with the tour group Intrepid. We were booked on 2 separate tours, Sabah and then Sarawak. Our Sabah trip consisted of 12 people in the group - Ian, Stig & Michael (2 big Danes), Mardi & Ezra, Paul and Tracey (all Melbourne), Dennis (Canada), John (65 year old from Scotland), Sheena (Ireland), our Aussie leader George and myself. We arrived in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday and headed straight for the beach. As the beach was a bit dirty and smelly, we sneaked into the grounds of a 5 star hotel where we sunbathed on their loungers by their nice, clean private beach. That evening we had a meeting at our hotel where we met the rest of our group and our leader. We all went for dinner together before a few ... read more
