So we just arrived in Semporna after spending two nights and three beautiful days in Sukau at the Sukau Tomanggong Riverview Lodge. On the afternoon of our arrival we had a gorgeous river ride down the Kinabatang River. This is the longest river in Sabah, 560km, and we saw two wild Orangutan, the first of which was a stone's throw from our accomodation. It was amazing to watch it swinging through the trees and trying to use its own momentum to reach a tree that he had built his nest in the night before (yes, Orangutans are the only mammals that build nests). We knew this one was a male because of his size and his flat, wide face. The second was also a male, but it was further off in the distance and less active ... read more

We have just returned from a one-hour boat ride from Turtle Island and our 4x4 driver is catching a bite to eat before we depart for the Kinabatang river, supposedly one of the best places to see wildlife in Borneo (to be honest, we don't know how it could get any better, but we shall see!). Yesterday was a fantastic day! We departed for the the turle islands (there are actually three of them but only one has accomodation on it) in the morning. We spent the day eating, drinking, snorkelling, and chilling out on the beautiful beach, which was kind of unexpected because we didn't realize that the islands even had such nice beaches to lounge around on during the day. Laura and Joyce were ecstatic to take advantage of the fact that Jon couldn't ... read more

Kuala Lumpur is such a modern city, unlike any others we've been to in SE Asia, except perhaps Bangkok but without the millions of motos and tuk-tuks belching out noxious black smoke. As a result KL is astoundingly clean, well appears to apart from when you look at the horizon to a haze of beige yellow smog, but the streets are litter free and the pavement sewer covers relatively intact, thus avoiding the daily danger of a warm sewage bath that is such a hazard in many other asian towns. Added to this Sophie and I checked into a really smart designer 5-star hotel thanks to a Christmas present for Sophie, so we were properly set up for a few days. No more roaches, cold showers, skanky beds and bedding and hello - air conditioning, room ... read more

So aside from our exciting mountain climb, we did some other cool stuff during our 9 days in Kota Kinabalu (KK). We stayed in a good hostel called the Beach Lodge; the first 2 nights we shared the dorm with 5 really nice people from the Phillipines and at the time we had no idea that we'd bump into them again on the mountain (2 or 3 times)! KK is a pretty nice, fairly small city with lots of shops, markets, bars and restaurants and promenade on the harbour front. We visted 2 small islands off the coast on 2 days which form part of a national marine park. While trying to find the ferry port the first time (lousy Rough Guide map had it in the wrong place!) we got talked into renting a small ... read more

Well we're having a great time here in Borneo. Been up to all sorts, but just going to tell you about our big trip for now, as it's quite a long one and I'm sure some of you have been worried about us (hi parents!). DAY ONE - 7am It was raining, so we bundled into a mini bus with our driver Jak. We only started to panic slightly during the two hour drive to the National Park when Jak let slip that he works two jobs and hadn't slept for the last 24 hours! (He's a big coffee drinker!) DAY ONE - 9am Still rainng, but all was good as we arrived at the park and met our minimal english-speaking guide Tony - or so we thought that was his name, but realised 36 hours ... read more

Tue 16th Jan Still raining hard the next morning we got a choppy boat ride back to the main land- somehow I managed to sleep. We then got taxis to the Orangutan rehabilitation centre. We went down to watch the first lot of Orangutangs at 11. Ofcourse it was raining but not to hard. There were lots of pigtailed maquaks trying to steal the pupmkin food. At the end the big male came and scared all the females away. Lots of films and photos taken. After lunch we watched a really good film about the rehabilitation programe and then went back to watch the second feeding. This time the male was there from the start and so the others never came down. It was funny when he had a bunch of bannanas in each hand and ... read more
