Hi guys, Singapore is a shoppers paradise-malls everywhere;lots of sky-scrapers; a very well kept subway; very clean-substantial litter fines in place; and a very spacious, futuristic airport. We stayed in Little India-a great place-buzzing with energy. Sunday night seems to be the big market night-it was packed on the streets-everyone stocking up on their vege and spices or just standing around chatting. The food was great-eating off a banana leaf with your fingers-nothing like Indian at home-much nicer and lighter! The Ancient Civilsation Museum was well worth a visit-we learned a bit about the different religions and cultures of Sth East Asia. Singapore's downfall I guess is it's expense in comparison to it's neighbour-Malaysia. I reckon a lot of backpackers limit their stay due mainly to the high cost. Our first stop in Malaysia was Melaka- ... read more

Well everyone this is my last blog, thank you very much for joining me on my journey for the last 6 months, it has been brilliant receiving all your comments and feedback. Since leaving the Philippines and encountering a minor problem at Manila airport (them telling me I’m not booked on the flight and my ticket is invalid!), I spent a couple of days in Singapore sorting out what I was going to do for the next 10 days. I eventually decided on heading north on a train to Kula Lumpar. My plan was pretty flexible so on the advice of two Canadian backpackers I met on the train, I ended up staying in what turns out to be one of my favourite hostels. It was small but in a great location and everyone there was ... read more

(Day 320 on the road)I feel great, but unfortunately I don't look the part. In fact, I think I look a bit like a drug junkie at the moment. People in the street stare at me, and I am pretty sure it is not because of my good looks (for the time being): On my forehead, my nose, my neck and my arms, the skin is peeling off from a sunburn I caught whilst on Pulau Tioman last week. Around my mouth, there are an incredible amount of heat blisters, also from the sunburn. On my left arm and my left leg, there are big red rashes where I was stung by stingray whilst diving. Further, on my left bum (luckily not many people get to see this) there is a massive blue spot from the ... read more

"According to a popular legend, Parameswara was resting under a gray tree near a river while hunting, when one of his dogs cornered a mouse deer. In self-defense, the mouse deer pushed the dog into the river. Impressed by the courage of the deer, and taking it as a propitious omen of the weak overcoming the powerful, Parameswara decided on the spot to found an empire on the very place that he was sitting. He named it 'Melaka' after the tree under which he had taken shelter. Another version of the story says that Parameswara chose the name 'Malacca' from the Tamil word 'mallakka' which means upside down or on ones back. Old illustrations of the scene where the mouse deer kicks the dog shows the dog falling on its back into the river, hence the ... read more

arrived in port dickson early wednesday afternoon and it is a very quite place (although our room had a hair dryer - i have never been so excited to see a hair dryer in my life! i could do my hair properly instead of hanging out of a window willing it to dry!) so decided to spend the afternoon chilling by the pool. was just starting to unwind when the pool area was swarmed by 30 malay people all on a team building exercise and were looking for ?clues, ?flags, ?other team building things. felt very uncomfortable sat in my bikini surrounded by fully clothed people screaming at each other! they soon disapeared though and the rest of the intrepid group turned up so we had a laugh playing daft games in the pool. went to ... read more

I actually went to Malaysia on three separate occasions, but will treat them here as if it was just one trip. The first time was a trip to Penang for 5 days over a weekend for a visa run just before Christmas so I could stay in Thailand over the holiday period without interruption. The second time was for a couple of weeks together with Elliott on our way down to Singapore. The third time was for another 5 days in Melaka before I went back to Singapore again for the Chinese New Year and to catch my flight to Australia. Penang Georgetown, Penang, is probably the most multicultural city I have ever been to. It’s a mix of colonial buildings and new high rise office buildings shimmering in the heat of the beating equatorial sun. ... read more

It's my second day in Melaka. Got stuck in Singapore for a few days - at first I thought I was getting sick but I think it was just allergies from all the plants - and then had to stick around one more day because all the buses were booked. Anyways Melaka is pretty interesting. It's a UNESCO heritage site, having been ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch, and then the British for about 150 years each. Lots of cool colonial buildings. It's really really hot here. Maybe because Singapore is surrounded by sea it's not so bad. Either way I got a lot of sun today and look like a tomato now. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures. So the Chinese here (my hostel is in Chinatown) are all getting ready for the Chinese New Year. ... read more

From Kashgar we planned to take a normal line-bus, as opposed to local taxis, to Sust, over the border in Pakistan. This was going to taker two days and therefore we were not entirely surprised to find that the bus we were to board was a sleeper bus. We had been in the same hotel for a few days, hotel Seman in Kashgar as when we came into China and this time we noticed the difference between a “minority town” and the rest of China. This Uygar town is not as organized as the towns more to the East, is far less well developed as far as shops and streets are concerned and the people are a lot less friendly. But apart from that we enjoyed some typical Uygar kebabs with pita bread in a ... read more

Malacca is a city unlike any other. On the west coast of malaysia, is a city frighted with the past, soaked in blood and sown with bones. It is an extraordinary city where half of the world's races have met, fought, loved and reproduced; where different religions have come together tolerated each other and integrated; where the intrests of great empires have struggled for primacy... if you wait until evening and then walk silently along thew walls or go up one of the hills and sit quitely on the old stones, you will hear it. It is alsmost a whisper, like the breeze, but you hear it all the same: the voice of history. malacca is one of those places. They whisper in chinese in portuguese, in dutch, in english, in malay, some even in italian... ... read more

A Day trip to Melaka from Kuala Lumpur: From KL I took a bus from Pudaraya bus station to Melaka city at 9am, for 21.20RM. Not bad for a 2 hour journey on a comfy bus. Once at Melaka Sentral I took the local bus into Chinatown and followed the Lonely Planet walking tour of Melaka city. The streets were narrow and unique - Melaka seems to hold its own sense of style/character which I liked. As a whole it has British, Portugese, Dutch, French, Chinese and Indian influences...and some more! It's a fascinating place; very varied and walkable. Walking along the streets was enjoyable, taking in the mix or architecture, it was only a shame that there were touristy shops to detract from that, but then I guess that is how a place like Melaka ... read more
