Sorry everyone, we haven't updated our blog for the past 2 weeks, our Mac gave out. Here is a brief rundown of what we have been doing in Malaysia: When we think of Malaysia, what immediately comes to mind is FOOD. Day 54 - December 3, 2008 We landed at Kuala Lumpur (locals call the city "K.L.") and stayed there for the night. We reached KL a few days late as we were stuck in Nepal for a couple of days. We were supposed to take Thai Airways but due the upheaval in Bangkok, the airport was closed for a week, so we decided to get a different route through Delhi. Day 55 - December 4, 2008 When we reached KL, Amy (Gim's younger sis) and Edmund (Gim's cousin) picked us up. Gim's other cousin, Joseph, ... read more

Ross: Our bus trip to Melaka on the west coast of Malaysia took approximately 5 hours with a quick stop at some services for chicken noodles. We'd decided to stick to the west coast due to the monsoon on the east, but didn't really know anything at all about Melaka itself. We arrived at Melaka Sentral bus station at around 11pm where one of the local Malaysians who'd been on our bus offered us a lift to our guesthouse in his parents car. When we arrived in the town centre it was still fairly busy due to the night market on Jonker Street and the fact that it was a bank holiday weekend. The traffic was heavy and our friendly locals didn't actually know where to drop us, so after a couple of circuits of the ... read more

Saturday 6th December - KL to Discovery Cafe and Guesthouse Melaka Laden with backpacks for a short but exhausting 10-minute stroll through the humid busy streets of Chinatown, we made it to the sweaty melee of Puduraya bus station. Fortunately we had only five minutes wait there, then to our air-con coach, which was on street outside. The journey along mostly jammed motorway (due to it being a national holiday weekend) was interrupted by an unscheduled stop at a service station for puncture repair. It was a pleasant break where we bought a slice of refreshing local fruit (not sure what is was) and some delicious peanuts from a roadside stall. Driver had amusing technique of taking slip road off at most junctions and then muscling back in to jump the traffic queues. Arrived at Melaka ... read more

After a painless bus ride and border crossing from Singapore into Malaysia we reached the city of Malacca which sits on the south west coast of Peninsular Malaysia on the Malacca Strait. It is a World Heritage Site. Malacca has a colourful history. Because of its location it was a very busy and important port and key centre of trade for many years, they shared good relations with China and had many Chinese settlers. It was eventually invaded by the Portuguese and then by the Dutch and then it was ceded to the British. It was ruled by Britain as part of the Crown Colony until it dissolved and it then became part of the Malayan Union which became Malaysia. Because of this the city has great mixture of cultures, people and architecture. For example it ... read more

One of the most surprising things about Kuala Lumpur, apart from using British plug sockets, how developed it is, and how old most of the tourists are (40+), is the increbile amount of rubbish everywhere. Street cornbers are piled with the stuff, and tourist attractions fare no better. Jenga-like stacks of plastic bottles are everywhere you look. Before leaving the capital we decided to visit the caves of Batu just outside of town. They are the site of the annual self-mutilation ceremonies that many of you have probably read about, or seen in pictures of hoards of people whipping their own backs to get over their sins. That's in February, so all we got to see were some monkeys and a massive golden statue. The caves were large and small at the same time. The roof ... read more

Our bus left mid-morning for Melakka (i must just add, there are about 3 different spellings of the town floating around so forgive me if i spell it in different ways) which only took a couple of hours, we arrived at the sentral station and had a little trouble finding our local bus to the hostel but we got there eventually! We got off at the stop indicated and were a bit concerned that we couldn't see the hostel or the road it was on but we just walked around in circles for a bit until eagle-eye matt spotted it and we went up. Initially Howard the manager wasn't there so 2 English girls just told us to wait. He eventually appeared, he reminds me of Where's Wally but Chinese/Malay and really reall enthusiastic and happy ... read more

Melaka is a lovely little town which has been given world heritage status this year - and deservedly so! The Dutch, English and Portuguese settled there many moons ago, so the buildings are a mixture of styles and very pretty! The streets are very narrow and cobbled which makes you feel like you’re in an old Spanish town, and there is a river running through the middle - just a very relaxing, gorgeous place! We arrived early in the afternoon on the 5th and didn’t have anywhere to stay booked, as there were a couple of places in Lonely Planet that sounded good, so we thought we’d try them when we got there. Hmm, after looking at the place which was Lonely Planet’s ‘top pick’ I think we’ll be going off our own judgment in future, ... read more

Sweats dripping down my face - I’m in Little India trying to find my hostel - Hindu music thumping in the background. The smells of India are substituted as I turned the corner towards my hostel by the river. That substituted smell is the fragrance of poop. With my nasal hair singed I had arrived in the Malaysian port city of Malacca. Malacca was a wealthy trade centre with the city falling under first Portuguese than Dutch and English control over around 450 year period. It has a lot of influences from around the world. It’s people Christian, Hindu and Islamic. And its buildings from the colonial years have earned the city UNESCO World Heritage status only in July this year. It is evident that the city is going through a stage of transition. Money has ... read more

Our first stop in Malaysia after crossing the border from Thailand was the northern island of Penang. Penang is a busy port town and was the British Empire's first step to controlling the entire Malay peninsular. When they first arrived, British Explorers fired silver coins into the thick jungle that covered the entire island. They did this to incentivise their crew to hack away and clear the thick growth to begin building a port. Penang is a strategic town in that it lies on the important trading route from China to India which was vital for the British opium trade. Penang is now a busy place with a traditional old town heart surrounded by new shopping malls and office blocks. The town is connected to the mainland by South East Asia's longest bridge. Our mini-bus crossed ... read more

Phew.....almost recovered from our jungle trek, although the journey between Taman Negara and Malacca wasn't exactly easy - It was made up of 4 buses, 5hrs waiting time for one of the buses, and a total of 15hrs from guesthouse door to GH door! A good few days of lie-ins were in order - which is actually a rareity for us, we're normally up and out at around 8am, but for a few days running we were still sleeping solidly till about 11am! Malacca is a World Heritage town and it really is charming. The old narrow streets of China town really are beautiful, similar to Georgetown, but the city also has a Dutch quarter, with big square building from when they settled here centuries ago. There's a massive mix of cultures here as the area ... read more
