Melaka was our last destination in Malaysia and just a year ago was designated an UNESCO World Heritage site and today is awash with a plethora of museums and quirky little side streets to provide a couple of days of relaxed amusement. In its heyday in the Middle Ages, it was a major port, it's prime location meant it was commandeered by the Dutch, the Portugese and the English at various times and their influences are evident in the town's architecture. Hand in hand with the historic buildings comes the enormous shopping centres that befit a nation apparently obsessed with shopping. Melaka, even though a city, retains a small town charm with friendly locals providing a warm welcome. ... read more

I was told Melaka was the Hoi An of Malaysia - a recent inductee into the UNESCO World Heritage cache of tourist attractions. Melaka was one of the original Dutch and Portuguese trading ports on the Straits of Melaka. Because of its diverse heritage, I read that it was a food Mecca, like Penang and that the architecture was distinct because of these varied influences. We planned on spending four nights in Melaka while waiting for our India visas to process. Instead, we spent three nights in Singapore and limited ourselves to only two nights in Melaka. I think it was sufficient. We certainly saw none of the promised cultural integration when we arrived at the unnecessarily large bus station complete with a big McDonald’s. The station was only about 3km outside of town and was ... read more

Hello people, Everyone's doing good! Spend my birthday going to the doctor, feeling ill and sorry for myself, even hoped the rat would come visit me again... Headed up to the Perinthian Islands off North East Malaysia. Met Ciaran there, after 4-5 days I felt better so we took the PADI diving course, passed that no probs. Next day I felt ill again and did for next few days so I left the island with my friend Cate and headed to Melaka. Amazing town, beautiful place. After seeing a doctor here, looks like I'll be spending tonight in a hospital and have some fun fun fun fun fun fun tests ran and find out what the score is tomorrow. Gotta keep smiling though! Could always be worse! xx... read more

Friday, May 15th We got up early to pack and grab breakfast because we had to catch the local bus to Kuala Lumpur at 8am. From there we'd take another bus to Melaka, two hours to the south. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Cameron Highlands. The memory of these cool and beautiful hills will stay with us a lifetime. We're loving Malaysia. The abundance of Indian food might have something to do with it, and for vegetarian Talita it's wonderful to have options for a change (after three months of eating veg-rice and veg-noodle she needed something different). Ferdi's not complaining either. The food is just sooo good (maybe a bit too good, by the look of our bellies). The local bus was really nice, it even had assigned seats. This was new to ... read more

Our bus from KL to Melaka was strangely an all male, all Indian bus .. so when we boarded Michelle took the usual 'white woman stares' in her stride. Malaysia has great transport links and the travelling along the English looking highway only took 2 hours. Another local bus dropped us at the pornographic sounding 'Red Dutch Square'. Melaka is a world heritage/UNESCO site and is very much like Hoi An in Vietnam (for those who have not been - its old, colonial and well kept). Our guesthouse was called 'River view' which was ... well on the river with a great view!. We were the only guests in the house and we took full advantage of claiming the relaxing chairs on the balcony before heading off for a curry. We were recommended a curry house ... read more

After our wild adventures in Borneo we flew to Johor Bahru on the mainland. We only transited through this city so we didn't get to see much. It is a crowded but clean city and bus stations are full of touts. We have finally got some experience in handling touts at the bus station. We took our time walking down all ticket counters which are all packed together where the counters are literally a small hole in the wall. Took us a few minutes to find the suitable departure time to Melaka and of course touts always try to charge us double but they didn't get us this time. When we arrived in Melaka we were greeted by friendly and non pushy people handing out fliers for hotels. One owner of a new hotel handed us ... read more
