Squat toilets. Seriously, whose bright idea was that? Yes, we’ll go to the trouble of constructing most of the infrastructure necessary for a proper sit-down toilet, but fall at the final hurdle and instead just put a hole in the ground. But wait, we’ll try and cover up our laziness by craftily disguising said hole with a toilet bowl seat set into the floor. Then, for good measure, we’ll install a garden hose that can perform the functions once so successfully carried out by bog roll and flushing. The entire system is an affront to the memory of Thomas Crapper (inventor of our much beloved loo). I understand that part of travel is embracing the cultural and lifestyle differences that exist between countries, but this is taking the piss (or more precisely, making it a balancing ... read more

Arrived on the other side of the bridge, and found the bus into town. On my bus were Sara-Jane and Simon from England and we found a place to stay and went expolring. We visited the replica Portuguese ship and marine museum and got a free ride across the river because we couldn't be bothered to walk all the way down to the bridge. I complained to them that I only had 10 weeks left so for the whole of the rest of the time taking the mickey out of me! There was a really funny man who broke a coconut with his elbow at the night market, very good night market too. The guesthouse I was staying at had really great people staying and we had a few fun nights. There was a family from ... read more

Although I 've already read before that the city has a European touch, I was surprised how strong it still is. It feels like somewhere in Southern Europe with the tiny streets with colourful houses, the heat and the friendly people. Part of the locals are the so called 'Eurasians'. Interesting mix between Malay and Europeans...looking very different. The city has a very own charme. People enjoy a very relaxed and laid-back lifestyle. They are really interested in Europeans and just start talking to me which is not that common for Asians. I found a possible spot for my retirement...European atmosphere combined with beach location nd inexpensiveness..awesome. ... read more

I'm in love with Malaysia. KL was clean, efficient, diverse and very tourist friendly. Melaka is just plain gorgeous. It took us two hours to get here from KL, on the most comfortable bus I think SE Asia must have to offer. It was luxury! The cost? 5USD. We arrived to Melaka Sentral around 2pm, the bus station just outside of town, and immediately purchased bus tickets for tomorrow to Singapore so that we wouldn't have to deal with it later. Then, a nice taxi driver who spoke English drove us to our hostel, the Kancil Guesthouse. Our hostel is very unique- it's a family's home and sort of in an open courtyard format. Our room has no AC, and just a shared bathroom. But hey, for a little over 10USD a night, I can't complain. ... read more

Luckily since the lens of my camera had defogged itself in the hot room during the night I could take some snaps during my daytrip to Melaka. I left my bags in the lobby as I finally managed to sort out a dorm but before 12 no check-ins are permitted. I walked to the Carrefour for an ice coffee and the vendor next door who made my breakfast, Roti Pisang (banana Roti-similar to naan). The bus to the station took about half an hour, as soon as I got there I went to the ticket stand for transnational, a company recommended to me, I got my return ticket to Melaka and my ticket for Penang my next stop. I waited by the platform one of the station stewards pointed along the way pointed out. with 5 ... read more

FOREWARNING - THIS IS QUITE A LONG BLOG, SO GO AND GET YOURSELF A NICE HOT CUPPA AND A BISCUIT We were in Melaka (also spelt Malacca) until 8th June after arriving on the 28th May following a short but bumpy flight from Borneo to Kuala Lumpur and then a two hour coach ride to the city bus station. Melaka is on the west coast in the south of Peninsula Malaysia and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Town in 2008. The city was founded in 1400 by a Prince who fled Sumatra after an attack in 1377, the legend goes that the Prince landed on the coast of Malaysia and went out hunting. Whilst he was hunting his dog ran off and when he found it, it was face to face with a mouse ... read more

We made our way from Singapore to Melaka, Malaysia. We got a coach from Singapore and went through immigration at the Malaysian border, Johor Bahru. We got another bus, which took us to our station at Larkin before we took another coach to Melaka! On the way, there were rows and rows of palm trees and forestation, concentrated together like we've never seen before. The scenery was so incredibly green. When we got to Melaka, a quick hop on a decrepid local bus took us round the corner from our hostel The Traveller's Lodge. The owner was really laid back and wanted us to rest before giving him money or anything, the room only cost us 7.00 a night for both of us! We rested for a short while, then headed out. Having eaten already, we ... read more

What's cool about Malacca (now) is that's it's been invaded so many times it's hard to keep track of. Chinese, Portugese, Dutch, British, Japanese, then British again. The reason this makes it all the more interesting is because every one of these cultures is present in some form or another in Malacca. Mostly, it makes for fantastic architecture and of course....FOOD! One of the first things we noticed when we walked down the street were the intoxicating wafts of herbs and spices, and then our favourite...bakery smells from all the goodies famous in the area, most notably...pineapple tarts! The multiculturalism of the area was made apparent when we asked our guesthouse host Pinto, who looked suspiciously Chinese, whether we was seeing his family on Saturday night (as is the custom for Chinese on CNY). He replied ... read more

I did not have to go far in search of a place for breakfast next morning. As I turned a corner from the street of my hotel, I came across a shabby but spacious South Indian restaurant. I selected a table making sure I am right under a ceiling fan. Although it was not 9 in the morning yet, the heat was already intense. Even the white plastic chairs seemed hot to sit on. I ordered a roti telur (egg bread) and kopi (coffee). The man working on the hot plate making rotis was slim and agile. His arms were shining with perspiration and his forehead sprinkled with sweat. He did not seem to care the heat, masterfully playing with the dough to bring it to the right shape. My breakfast cost only 70 cents. I ... read more
