"I am Godzilla and you are Japan" We have for many years said to each other that it would be interesting to visit Japan some day. We always said "one day" because we kept postponing that journey for economical reasons. The Land of the Rising Sun is too expensive to travel in we thought. We were wrong, Japan isn't expensive if you compare with other countries with similar standard. If you think you can't visit Japan because it is expensive we'll start this blog entry by giving you an idea of what the prices really are like in Japan. Food: In the budget noodle shops you can buy decent food for 5 USD. If you wish to try sushi you can get as many as 28 pieces of sushi for about 20 USD. Accommodation: We stayed ... read more

Le ... read more

LONG WAY TO PATAGONIA. Sydney...Tokyo...Los Angeles...Lima...Buenos Aires... left 3 days before Denise...arrived a few hours before...nearly wheel chaired...detained & locked up...fraternised with celebrities...hospitalised...what an adventure! Then to drive down the Andes in a 4WD...just the two of us...playing Blues and Rock & Roll...that's epic. ***** We were invited to join an Aussie and his Argentinian partner to stay with her family in B.A. then have them show us around Argentina. Planned to drive down the Andes together...plans dashed by an accident in B.A...ended up we drove down the Andes alone...no Spanish...in & out of Argentina and Chile...lucky I had my maps and my itinerary planned in Oz...we'd have been ratshit without them! Lucky I had my motto..."David Hoo Tours...Your Travel Experts with Minimum Experience but Maximum Optimism"...no better ... read more

Akasaka Today we started the day by going to the National Art Center Tokyo in Roppongi. After getting lost in the sprawling urban design shopping-living-working nightmare complex that is Roppongi Hills we finally found the museum. On the way we had the chance to see how the Japanese prune their trees. The workmen wear thin soled boots with a toe that allows them to climb the tree and grip the branches. So cool. The museum itself was nothing short of spectacular. The main lobby of the museum is a huge space surrounded on one side by an undulating glass wall. Inside are two inverted concrete cones containing some functions. Coincidentally there was a really nice exhibition of Pointilism (divisionism). Mainly Monet, Seurat, Van Gogh, Mondriaan. Many works were from the Kroller-Meuler museum in Otterlo, NL! After ... read more

After breakfast and a 7-11 coffee... We started out our day making train reservations and then walking around Ueno park (also known by some as Bueno Park). It's a pleasant park in the heart of the city, much like central park in NYC. There are museums a zoo and street performances, just like in Central Park as well. We wandered and found a shire and giant lotus flowers and pampas grass. For lunch we ate at nearby Ameyokocho which has lots of places to eat and little shops under the train. The takoyaki (fried doe with squid inside) was a highlight. In the afternoon we met up with Robyn's sister to explore the famous Senso-ji Buddhist temple in Asakusa. The front gate is famous as a "entrance to the city" symbol. Next we stood in the ... read more

Tokyo After saying our farewells to Brian at Matsumoto Backpackers, we head to the train station to catch our Limited Express train back to Tokyo for our final three days in Japan. On the way we have more great views of Mount Fuji – though this time it has much more snow on its peak. The scenery changes from lovely lush hillsides and valleys to flatter land with more settlements and industry. Japan’s countryside is definitely more interesting for us than the cities. We are staying again at Asakusa Toukaisou Ryokan for 1 night (room not quite so nice this time) before moving across to a hostel, Khaosan Tokyo Kabuki, for the last 2 nights, where we have a nice en-suite room on the 4th floor (with a lift thankfully!). The staff are very ... read more

We fly from Delhi to Kuala Lumpur (5 Hours) with Malaysian Airways as part of the first leg of our mammoth journey to Japan. The food is good as is the service – however, the airhostess seems to have taken a liking to C as we are plied with red wine and whisky & peanuts (which the others did not get), so much so that when we arrived in KL, C was a bit worse for wear and can’t recall getting off the plane or (!!) the transit 3 hours when we had Burger King – her staple hangover cure – while M enjoyed some Malaysian Street Food as well. The next leg (Malaysian Airlines again) sees us depart at 11 pm for a night time 5 hour flight to Narita airport Tokyo. Snacks are on ... read more

For many years I flew to Tokyo and had layovers there. I usually was so tired that I only explored the area around Narita. My husband Tim and I decided to visit and explore Tokyo and we were delighted by our finds. We stayed in Roppongi and decided to use mostly the subway for transportation. I was a little intimidated by the language barrier but found it quite easy to navigate. Most Japanese people speak some English and they were so kind that we never felt lost or uncomfortable. Our first trip was to the Senso-ji temple in Asakusa. It was founded in 628 and is the oldest temple site in Tokyo and is their capital's spiritual center. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Kannon and there is a 3 inch statue of Kannon located ... read more
