I've been fascinated by the size, scale and efficiency of this city and what better way to get an understanding of it's amazing history than the excellent Edo Tokyo Museum. It traces the history of Edo/Tokyo from fishing village origins to modern day metropolis. Except - CLOSED on MONDAYS! Whoops! Probably should have checked that before we trecked across town specifically. Nevermind, Ryoguko is home to the Sumo stables and while it's not Sumo tournament season, we did see a Sumo in the flesh. Not a tall man, by any measure, but BIG! Long black hair tied in a top-knot above his dinner plate face and shoulders like a Rhino. His wide flat feet slip out of his sandals as he waddles to the train station in his yukata. The closed museum was a disappointment. Some ... read more

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, mostly because we’re traveling to many different cities and Tom’s been on the computer confirming travel plans and doing business with US companies (including the Navy Exchange, unfortunately) that can’t comprehend that someone might travel outside the US and not be able to just pick up a phone and call during their business hours. Skype has been very useful, but those companies who say “just mail us a copy of …” should be disestablished. I tease Tom that the reason he likes Japan so much is that it’s pathologically organized. We breezed through immigration and customs at Tokyo’s Haneda airport and were in our taxi within 25 minutes – and almost immediately were tangled in traffic resulting from an overturned truck on the elevated highway. In our hotels, there ... read more

The first thing we ate was gyoza. We had spent weeks, months even, planning the trip. Looking into different city locations, having "Japlanning" nights where we sat down and watched YouTube vlogs of people in Tokyo and Kyoto. We had learned about the different areas where there were both incredible sights and sounds, and delicious food. And make no mistake, this trip was about food. And doing a workshop and a conference, but realistically? Food. Japanese food. Having grown up in Vancouver, I've had my fair share of Japanese food and culture and loved every minute of it, eating sushi weekly with friends, going for Izakaya after work, (I remember the one near 2120 Cambie which had towers of gyoza, divine) and with dear friends, finding fun sushi places like Kadoya on Davie and its dessert ... read more

Hit and Run, six countries, one month, two girls! We had one month of school for winter break. A whole month to explore Asia. After looking at a lot of different routes and working out the best financially Val and I decided to do Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. We are in Tokyo!! Nine whole days in Tokyo! I have always wanted to go to Tokyo, mainly because I would love to ski there. I didn't get to do that this trip but Tokyo was amazing. As mentioned before I'm a big Disney fan and Tokyo has a Disney so for the first four and a half days of our trip to Tokyo, I went there. The first two days Val joined me and we spent time going on the rides, taking photos ... read more

Merry Christmas to me! Since it was Christmas, I decided to have a leisurely morning. I decided not to set my alarm and wake up when I was ready. I chilled at the hostel, taking my time to get ready, chilling over breakfast and chatting to the other guests and staff. Eventually, I was ready and since I'd only had a small breakfast, ready for some lunch. I love sushi, so that would be my Christmas Dinner in 2016, it hands down beats the Taco Bell I had at Incheon airport last year. I had learnt that one of the 100 yen conveyor belt sushi chains had opened a branch in the shopping arcade in Asakusa, near the temple. I had been warned that they had very little for 100 yen (well, 108 with the tax), ... read more

W każdej podróży nadchodzi ten moment. To nasz przedostatni dzień w Japonii w tym roku. Jutro o 10 wylatujemy do Warszawy. Tyle wiemy z relacji rodziny i znajomych. Teraz nad Honsiu jest idealnie czyste niebo i aż szkoda stąd wyjeżdżać. Dwa dni jakie spędziliśmy w Kioto miały być uzupełnieniem zeszłorocznego pobytu w mieście. Zakładaliśmy ... read more

Geo: 35.7127, 139.792Sadly, our first couple of nights in Tokyo have been a bit disappointing - perhaps our expectations had grown beyond reality after such an amazing first visit to Japan, setting an impossible standard. Our chosen activities likely didn't help - a sushi restaurant whose reputation has grown to a mythical level, and a show that has become a pop culture oddity, one that seemingly takes all things "Japanese" and mashes them all up into a giant cauldron of steaming assorted ramen.Fortunately, today we came to the conclusion that Tokyo is at its dynamic best when allowed to reveal itself naturally, instead of trying to force experiences like we have. Case in point - we never actually walked around Tsukiji yesterday after eating at Dai, because we couldn't wait to escape after nearly six mostly-forgettable ... read more

Geeks, temples, gardens, cruising, the new Sony Walkman and plenty of food in Tokyo You can't walk very far in Tokyo without finding somewhere to eat. There are more restaurants here than in any other city in the world plus convenience stores on most streets as well. After meeting Toyo at the Kaninamarimon gate and having a quick flit and a prayer in the Senso-ji temple it was time to find the first food of the day. That's not to dismiss our first two stops but I started talking about food so I thought I'd better lead into that. (Both the gate and the temple and the market in between are worth a visit) You think Tokyo is expensive? We had three meals and two drinks and the bill came to just over £10. It was ... read more

A full Japanese breakfast, taco stuffing yanks, Toyo and, finally, Tokyo!! A number of years ago I lived in Hong Kong and while I was there I did a bit of English teaching. It was mainly conversation classes for adults and I still keep in touch with two of my students, both of whom have visited me in England. Today it was time to return the favour for one of them as one of my students and friends was a Japanese lady called Toyo. I hadn't seen her for quite a few years and she'd never met Claire and we planned to meet at Yokosuka station at 10am. We were up early and meeting various people in the house. Breakfast was included and our host has published vegetarian cookbooks and used to run a restaurant in ... read more

Tokyo Skytree On 6 October, having decided to go to Skytree, one of the new attractions in Tokyo, we took the sobu line from Shinjuku station. It was already quite warm in the mid morning. I took my jacket off. Upon arriving at Kinshicho station, we found the sign for the Skytree, and could see it from the distance. We headed for the direction by walking straight on the street from Kinshicho station.’s square. After walking for 15 minutes, Oshiage station appeared on the right, and a lofty tower came into our sight: the tower with height of 634m looked awesome and spectacular as we approached. We entered the building from Soramachi (sky town) Hiroba (square), and went up by the escalator. On the 4th floor, we found the help desk counter for foreigners. Despite the ... read more
