Temples! Sushi! Sumo! It's about the only thing I have been able to focus on the past few months ever since I told my girlfriend, Katie, that we should take a trip to Tokyo. So many times these past few months, while stuck doing overtime at work or sacrificing going out on a weekend, I kept telling myself "It'll all be worth it when you're in Japan." After we decided to go for it, I began to voraciously read travel guides, blogs, web sites, and anything I could get my hands on that would give me information on Japan and things to see/do. And today........ today was the day we'd depart to The land of the rising sun. *RING*.......*RING*...... *RING*........ as the alarm clock rang out, my first thought was "please, just 5 more min.", however, ... read more

Amazing day despite some set backs with cell phones in asian style toilets. I went to Kamakura today and it was amazing. It was incredibly hot which made it harder to enjoy but it is a beautiful place. When it comes to Japan, we hear so much about Tokyo that its easy to forget most of it still looks like a scene out of totoro. A 40 minute train ride brought me through rice paddies and into what was almost a jungle. There were giant cicadas, colorful spiders and huge toads and of course the temples dotting the hillsides were amazing as well. I got to see the giant buddha and go inside which was cool. Leaving Tokyo definately made navigating a bit more difficult since everything wasjust in kanji but I ended up tgging along ... read more

Not a whole lot new to report. I met a group of tourists at the fish market and hung out with them for a bit. They were from New York and LA to celebrate their friends Bday. It was 7AM when I ran into them and they had come straight from the night club but were somehow still concious. I went out to breakfast with them and was pleasantly surprised that it is possible to get decent food here for pretty cheap. The market itself was kind of dissapointing. It was too chaotic to really look around much and not knowing japanese super well, I didnt really know whic areas I was allowed in. Later I discovered this who walk way of shops and a huge complex of temples just a block or so from my ... read more

So its about 4AM here but I couldn't get back to sleep so I decided to update. First off, the trip over went well despite being rediculously long. I navigated the airports okay and if you ever get a chance to fly Korean air I would definately recommend it. Their economy class service was more like the first class on British Air. The plane was not very full so I had three seats to myself and spent most of the flight watching movies and litening to music on their in flight entertainment system. They had B.O.B's new album on there which made me very happy and reminded me of Jesse. It sounds over-dramatic but being away from him is turning out to be really really hard. I had an interesting moment with that at the airport. ... read more

After an invigorating few days on an island, worlds away from the smog, congestion and pollution of the big cities, we were ready to head back into it. We flew into Narita Int'l aiport on Aug 10 and took the hour long train ride into Tokyo city. Our amazement in Japan's technology and overall awesomeness didn't take long to set in when, while waiting for the train's doors to open, we see the seats all being automatically put in the upright position and turning around to face the direction of travel! Amazing! Tokyo was a little overwhelming at first and quite busy, even though it was 11pm on a Wednesday night! Caught off guard, we had dinner at McDonald's, found a hotel after a long search and got some shut eye. August 11th We woke up ... read more

So I leave Mizusawa after a great week and head for Tokyo. The bullet train lived up to its name (and is a very comfortable journey besides as it doesn't rock) and I was in Tokyo almost before I knew it. Made my way to my hostel in Asakusa (North-East Tokyo), only to arrive in the middle of a parade! It turns out that today was the final day in a extremely famous and popular festival. Since Sunday is the day most Japanese people have off work/school, the streets were packed with people, floats, drummers and dancers, vendors and everything else besides. I felt like a complete jerk dragging my heavy suitcase through the crowd but - having checked-in - I made sure to go back and enjoy the sights and sounds. There was quite a ... read more

Denne dag startede meget tidligt!

If you know the movie Lost In Translation, then you will have a general idea about how our day has been... Our started in Harajuku a little outside of Tokyo Center, where we watched japanese teenagers dressing up in a range of very stray and overly decorated costumes - a trend called Cosplay...look forward to the pictures! Afterwards we walked to a nearby shrine where we were lucky enough to witness a real Japanese wedding. By 4 in the afternoon we headed towards Shinjuku, where a large part of Lost In Translation was filmed: colorful neon lights, buildings in competition for reaching the sky, and people as far as the eye could see... we were lost in translation. And also just plain lost. So after walking past several good-looking japanese restaurants without being able to decide ... read more

English: We're tired. Have hardly slept in 48 hours. Don't understand Japanese. And would really very much like to head off to sleep in our rickety bunk bed, and rest our tired bodies on inhumanly thin mattresses. And our mind blown head on a pillow made of... beads. But on the BRIGHT side: 1. We're already loving the Japanese culture, and looking forward to spending the next 2 weeks surrounded by cherry blossoms and various Hello Kitty merchandise, all in very deep shades of pink. 2. Despite minor setbacks like Japanese roads not having any names (AT ALL), we managed to find our way to our hostel without too much trouble - helped along by some very friendly locals. 3. Finally: we've just enjoyed our first real taste of japanese cuisine. SUSHI!!! Dansk: Vi er trætte. ... read more

Well I’m now in Japan and I’ve been awake for thirty three hours! Tuesday the 16/03/10 saw an eventful departure, traffic backed up for miles had me edgy as hell, but, we still made it in forty minutes to spare. After wandering around in Glasgow airport I spent the flight down to Heathrow next to two very different individuals. While we were waiting on the gangway like cattle waiting to board a 200 seater Tin Can there was a loud obnoxious man who seemed to take delight in using buzz words and large numbers but also having everyone else listening in on his conversation. He might as well have added us all on a conference call; he then proceeded to put his bag in the overhead compartment two rows away from his seat to the annoyance ... read more
