Woke up suddenly to find that the time was 3:20AM. Rest of the gang was supposed to arrive at 3:30AM. Got little freaked out rushed down to the reception to find that their wake up system was down (What wake up system, I guess the guy at the reception overslept or forgot about the wakeup call !!). Reception called for a call taxi and had to wait 15 minutes for the cab to arrive. The taxi driver drove me to the airport in 20 minutes and luckily the BA flight was 20 minutes late. After about 10 minutes wait I saw Heather and Dan looking for their luggage. We drove back to Dee Cee Manor in the same taxi that took me to airport. Everyone was tired and went to bed immediately. Woke up at 9:30AM ... read more

Had breakfast at the hotel, John and Nikki tried Iddly, Sambar, Parotta and Pongal for breakfast. John's favorite was the vanilla milk shake. After breakfast headed out to T-Nagar for shopping in auto-rickshaw. Three of us barely fit in it. We went straight to Pothy's. John and Nikki found some cloths and I shopped for Indu. John had tough time getting his cloth size. After T-Nagar we went to Spencer plaza. John finally found some soccer jersey's that fit him. We had pizza in Pizza-Hut at Spencer's and John loved it. Nikki was craving for some Pizza after their London trip. Headed out to Dee Cee Manor and thought about Bikes and Barrels for some drinks. We were kicked out since I was not wearing shoes and John was in shorts. We were recommended by the ... read more

Start of a long awaited trip with my friends to India pretty excited went to the airport to take my flight to Frankfurt, couldn't make the flight on standby due to Lufthansa strike. Found alternate nonstop flight to Delhi on American. I was little concerned about John and Nikki reaching Chennai before me, so I asked my In-laws to receive them. Reached Delhi on time and waited for my early morning flight to Chennai on Go-Air. Had to pay more for the two piece luggage. The Delhi domestic airport system is weird because one had to wait outside the airport until 3 hrs before the flight. No restrooms or checked luggage facility at the terminal had to ask a fellow passenger's help to look after the luggage to use the restroom about 2 blocks away. Anyway, ... read more

I've been in Chennai for a month now and it's starting to feel like home. I thought I would send a few pictures of my new city :) With a population of about 6.4 million, Chennai is one of the larger cities in South India but it still manages to feel like a village. The locals are traditional and friendlier than a lot of people I've met in other parts of India. Many of the men wear the traditional lungi (something similar to a sarong tied around their waist) and it's rare to see older women in anything but saris. Alcohol is frowned upon and religious devotion is a huge part of society with mundirs and temples on every street. Chennai sits on the east coast of India next to the Bay of Bengal. Most of ... read more

I've gotten pretty good at navigating India by train. Currently I'm aboard the Howray Mail train bound for Bhubaneswar, Orissa. I left Chennai last night around 11:30pm and will arrive in Bhubaneswar at about 10pm tonight...yes, that's almost a 24hr train ride!! It's ok though, this time I sprung for an A/C sleeper, so it's not bad at all. I actually really like train travel, it's feels more rustic (in a good way) and you get to see the countryside as you go along. Also (and maybe more importantly) it's dirt cheap. I paid 35 USD to go about the equivalent of Atlanta to New York. A one way flight was 244 USD! Chennai was awesome. I expected it to be one of my least favorite places based on what everyone else told me about it, ... read more

So technically it's only my first day in india but i felt my trip up deserved an entry in itself. anyway, creature of habit am i; reserved an isle seat all the way to chennai from cape town and, with trepidation and many warnings, booked my luggage all the way through. the trip from cape town was uneventful, a slighly bumpy landing, more like a nose dive onto the runway than a graceful glide.. found my way to the emirates checkin wher i was promptly told i had a seat change oooh the sparks wer about to fly, seat change.. I don't think so! anyway turns out it wasn't a seat change, it was an upgrade, read it, BUSINESS CLASS BABY!!! hell yes, 9 hour flight being served champagne and OJ, hot towels, have a menu to choose ... read more

Hi from Sumit!!!!!!!!! Lucky to find this site in google. Well i have been searching for the suitable site where i can put all my experiences that can help travellers traveling to India in particular. I am a native from India and put up In New Delhi. But recently i travelled to Southern India, and I found South India is different than North. Those who have travelled India can distinguish the differences between North and South. I travelled to Chennai where i started my crusade to South India. My next destination was Pondicherry or Puducherry. I always wanted to visit this place and finally i made it. Travelling from Chennai to Pondicherry was awesome experience. My first encounter with the ocean was here in ECR(East Cost Road). So if you are traveling Pondicherry via Road or ... read more

The pain of riding public buses was, at least, temporarily suppressed whilst traveling in relative style aboard the 2AC compartment in our Chennai bound train. During the train ride, I had the opportunity to chat to a nice Kerelan man who worked as a general manager for the Malayala Manorama, a 125 year old Kerelan newspaper. He was rather proud of the newspaper and provided me with paper distribution statistics in Kerela, major Indian cities, Dubai and the USA. He also talked about his sons, both of whom were studying Engineering in India (surprise! Hehehe). We talked travel a bit, and, when he learned I had been to Malaysia a few times, he quizzed me on the best places to go and the best things to do as he was planning a trip with his family ... read more
