Back to the future (or ahead to the past?) Here's the last one, as I prepare myself for returning to civilization (should I put quotes or not?). In the last month I could not update the site as I struggled with some sort of bacteria which I contracted probably along the way, while eating something on the street or, more likely, drinking tap water....I guess this is how things happen, a small one-time concession, a slight exception to the rule of care turns into a BIG MISTAKE with loads of consequences. In my case, it was one night where I woke up in my guest house room at 3am with an incredible thirst. As I did not have bottled water, i decided not to use my super url=http://www.rei.com/pwr/product-reviews/Camping-Hiking/Filters-and-Purifiers/Portable-Water-Filters/MSR/p/695265-MSR-MiniWorks-EX-Filter.html water purifier (which saved me several times) and ... read more

So the only notable thing that's happened outside of work since the Agra trip was the boarding process for my flight from Chennai to Mumbai last night (had flown from Delhi to Chennai the night before). The vendor we visited earlier in the day was kind enough to send us off with gifts, and each of us received a travel sized golf kit containing a golf club that you need to assemble from multiple sections like a pool cue. Two members of the group packed it in their checked baggage. I and another traveling companion put it in our carry-on... My colleague made it through the security line without incident. When I got to the other side of the x-ray machine though, the guard asked me if I had something in my bag that I couldn't ... read more

Hey again! So to catch everyone up, I'm going to lump Pondicherry and Madurai blogs together. After arriving in Pondicherry, we dropped our bags and then decided to explore the town a little. Pondicherry is a former French colony and still retains some of the culture. Even the streets are named "Rue ___"! Pondy is a really nice, relaxed seaside town. The whole place is easily walk-able and generally has a nice atmosphere. It's also a center for yoga and spiritual study and a major producer of homemade paper products. In our wanderings we found a little antique shop that was packed full of treasures. I found a beautiful ceramic Ganesh (god with an elephant’s head) sculpture and a few other smaller trinkets. Burt found a really neat chess set. Our second day started with a ... read more

I have wondered around the beach in Madras, had a glimpse of the famous Bollywood, but after all, Tamil Nadu's Capital was much too congested and noisy to my taste, so I headed to the beach. I have spent 2 relaxing weeks in Mamallapuram where I admired some Pallava ruines and temples, but mainly I just enjoyed reading and chilling for awhile giving my stomach a rest from chilly and curry ( which , I must confess, by now is not so amusing and I got a bit bored of ...) so I enjoyed myself -and stuffed- in the Western tourist orientated restaurants featuring Pizzas, Burgers and the likes : ))) Körüljártam Madrast, bekukkantottam a Hollywoodi filmgyártás kulisszatitkai közé, de mivel Tamil Nadu fővárosát túlnyüzsgőnek találtam becéloztam a tengerpartot, hol 2 hétig pihentem Pallava romok és ... read more

Alrighty, so we're definitely off to an interesting start here. Our flight from Singapore was delayed about 45 minutes due to some technical difficulties. Luckily we had booked a hotel with airport pick-up service, so it wasn't a problem when we arrived around 11:30PM. Unluckily, our hotel was pretty crummy and way overpriced. We woke up the next morning wondering if we were crazy for doing this. But we sucked it up and got moving. We caught a rickshaw to our new hotel, a place called the Paradise Guest House. The ride was certainly eye-opening! Our driver whipped us around corners, squeezed through tiny gaps between cars, and nearly ran down a few pedestrians. Cows, motorbikes, cars, work carts, bicycles, and pedestrians all on one tiny road, and all making some kind of noise. I wasn't ... read more

My last couple of days in India have been alright. We had our last two days of AFP, which I must say were disappointing. Our program was very poorly planned and we ended up sitting in a restaurant being lectured to for two days. Literally, sitting in a restaurant. We didn’t visit any sites; there was no hands on learning whatsoever. I was overwhelmingly bored for most of the two days, as the speakers mostly talked about nuclear weapons and bashed America. In fact, one of the speakers went as far as to say that people needed to stop being victims from 9/11 and the holocaust. I was the only American in the group, so I was left to defend my country when I wanted nothing more than to take a nap. We are all very ... read more

So, today was the first day of our AFP. We started off the morning as a large group at Madras University. A couple of people spoke about the university and specifically about the Gandhi Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at the university. The English was a bit rough, as was the microphone, so I didn’t hear as much as I would have liked about the program. The highlight of the morning was definitely the cookies and chai tea they passed out. Mom, it was the best chai I’ve ever had…you need to book a ticket to India just to have a cup of tea. In the afternoon my small group headed out on a tour of Chennai. We learned that the town has a population 7.2 million, which makes it the 4th largest city in ... read more

Having been flagged off, we then retraced our steps back over the bridge. We had been told that today’s roads were particularly bad, so much so that apparently all the rickshaws had had their suspension checked. Why I don’t know, as it was pretty dire anyway, and there didn’t seem to be much difference. Our ladybits (and those of Miss Havisham) were still getting a pummelling, new suspension or no. We surmised that on the day that what we were actually driving on was a half-finished road, as we would get to some tarmac and then it would abruptly finish and the road would be dirt again, then the tarmac would start just as abruptly again, normally outside some government official’s house. It seems to be policy here that government officials have quite a cushy deal, ... read more
