Well, we finally made it out of Goa although we thought something was trying to stop us! After a five hour delay, we reached chennai with a 6 hour wait before our next flight! The airport was pretty basic and obviously you couldn't smoke inside so tel and i decided to do the only sane thing we could think of............play rummy on trolleys in the car park for hours! It started to get a little difficult when all the taxi drivers were helping tel by telling him what cards i wanted! We will move on to some slightly more sophisticated games soon i hope but i don't know any others!! Oh before we left Goa i had my nose pierced, hurt a lot more than i remember and unfortunately we don't have any photo's of the ... read more

South Chennai - Prabu's home I met Prabu in Angola whilst I out for work and he was working at the same bank. We had the great pleasure of meeting Prabu and his lovely family last week when we arrived in Chennai and last night Kate and I were invited to his 7 year old son's birthday celebration at his home. It was very nice to see how much fun the children were having, with complete automony they were like durcell bunnies, nothing would stop from their play! I've never seen more energetic kids in my life! After our meal and cake we were treated to hand henna. Please see pictures for more.. Wed.... read more

Chennai Cricket Stadium - Englan V India - Day 3 - Test match OK, I must stress that I really don't know much about cricket but we had a little help from a colleague. People from work will recognise him and might even be surprise to see him in these photos. :) He was good enough to explain the rules, and there were many! The day started off with India batting and within 10 minutes of arriving we saw the mighty Flintoff take two wickets! Get in! Happy days. England were up next to bat. And so the day proceeded with England leading by about 230 runs by the time we left and only 3 wickets down. Not bad. As I said earlier, I'm not very clued up on cricket but it's hard not to enjoy ... read more

Day 1 - Arrived at Chennai airport at approx. 04:00 We found the YWCA guesthouse and with heavy hearts we had to wake up the snoring Isaac to check us in. The guest house has a monastry feel to it with lots of trees and gardens surronding the international guest house. The staff were all very friendly despite the hour! Our room, albeit infested with ants, was comfortable enough with AC and a ceing fan to keep us cool in the warm Indian winter nights! Much later that day (yes, we managed to get in about 10 hours sleep!) to went in search of SIM cards, internet cafes and the likes. We found Spencer's plaza, with it's three phased design! It's like an indoor souk and it has pretty much everything you need. We had dinner ... read more

We are now at the Childrens Home in Kaliyampoondi, a small village about 2 hours from Chennai. We flew from Dehli to Chennai yesterday morning and spent the better part of the day trying to connect with a doctor who is going to perform plastic surgery for one of the girls at the home who was burned very bad as a child. He was callled into emergency surgery though so we did not get to meet with him and instead got caught in the worst traffic I have ever seen. It took us two hours just to get out of Chennai, we didn't get to the home until nearly one in the morning. Then it took us nearly an hour to get the mosquito nets all put up and make sure there were no ants in ... read more

The incessant rains of Cyclone Nisha have finally come to an end. My mom is visiting me this week and unfortunately we've been stuck indoors for the past 5 days! We ventured out to the grocery store the other day and we had to wade through knee-deep water to get there. Here are some pictures ... enjoy :)... read more

I'm in a train station, headed north to Karnataka state (little historical/tourist place called Hampi). I just found out about the Mumbai attacks by looking over the shoulder of some fellow reading a newspaper. Getting lots of love and concern (thanks!) but I am not scared in the slightest for five main reasons: 1)I had and have no plans to go to Mumbai (or back to Delhi, another potentially dangerous city) 2)With my beard and my lungi, I look Muslim (locals ask me if I am all the time, and most Tamils away from tourist areas think I am North Indian). Not that these bastards carrying out these attacks don't kill alot of Muslims, but I don't think I would be specifically targeted. 3) I am a Canadian citizen. Everyone loves Canada! 4) The Shiva powers ... read more

A couple of years ago I discovered that my family has some strong connections with India. In fact I’d been given a faint hint some years earlier that India may be the reason for my somewhat dark and ‘eastern’ appearance. Through some newly discovered relatives from my grandfather’s side our family began to piece together some blanks and for the first time take an active interest in our Indian heritage. It turns out that my great great Grandfather was the world champion of billiards toward the end of the nineteenth century, a man by the name of John Roberts Jnr (1847-1919). His skill with the cue took him all around the globe and inevitably to India where he showcased his skills to the Maharaja. The sport’s success in India led the family to develop a billiard ... read more
