Arrived in South India after 2 nights on the train from Delhi. Going to see what's happening at Auroville, an International Community, and then take it from there. "Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity."... read more

Tonight at post-port I decided to tell some of my story from India. Post-port obviously takes place following a port and it is a time during which the shipboard community can go to share some of their stories and experiences from each port. Now I should have warned the audience that I am a terrible storyteller ahead of time so they could be prepared. I decided to get up and talk about my meditation retreat experience because it was so different from everyone else’s. While they saw a crazy India (don’t worry I saw that too), I found peace and relaxation within a country of 1.3 billion and counting. I really wanted to convey what an awesome and unique experience I had, but I think I should just stick to writing it. Maybe if I keep ... read more

The drive frron Thanjavur to Chennai was a long run, about seven hours, only broken by a stop at the Swaminatha Temple in Swaminalai. Swaminatha is another name for Murugan the son of Shiva and the temple featured many images of the Shiva family. There were several large paintings (I think they must either date from the Nayak period or else be more recent). One showed Ganesh actually riding on his mouse. I knew that the mouse is Ganesh's mount but all depictions I had seen previously (even the Nandi like mouse in Thanjavur) hasd been far to small to realistically carry the elephant-headed god, but here a blue mouse is shown carrying not only Ganesh (in powerful form with eight arms, but also a consort. Likewise, Murugan was depicted on his peacock with even more ... read more

The last leg of my Indian trip, I decided to go South on the way home. Having visited Kerala a couple occasions, the only place left to uncover was Tamil Nadu. I left good-bye to friends in Jaipur and went straight to the city airport with the backpack and the little carrier bag I came with to India a year ago. I left Jaipur with a heavy heart, a bit sad to leave the place at where I spend a good deal of my time with some great people. There is always an end, where there is always a beginning. My flight was full of IPL cricket players who were heading to Mumbai to play a game. Surprising there were Sri Lankan cricketers too. I sat behind two of the players and began to count the ... read more

From outside the train station, I took taxi to get to the guest house called the Red Salvation Army Guest House. The guest house is located a couple of miles away from the central Chennai. I had to take the opportunity to seek the sanctuary here at the time of my late arrival. Having circled around and making five or six phones calls, the taxi driver cleverly found the place to the guest house. I realised that it was trick work of the taxi driver to charge me for all the hassle which I caused him. I refused to pay an extra rupee, which irritate not only the taxi driver but also the night duty officer at the guest house. However, there was an English guy to rescue me, who later became a good travel companion ... read more

India! So we have finally reached the one place I have been dreaming to come for years. INDIA! I’ve been to a lot of big countries but India has always fascinated me because of its rich culture and awesome food. Also, I’ve never been to a Hindi country before so I was ready for a culture shock. I also decided not to be an ignorant traveler so I brushed up on my understanding of India. I read the Baghavad Gita (most famous religious story about Lord Krishna) did some lonely planet homework, read up on the national hero Mahatma Ghandi and watched Slumdog Millionare again! Haha. We arrived yesterday here in Chennai on a Sunday so the streets were fairly free since many people stayed at home. But once we got to the night market… it ... read more

So an update on our adventures... I've been doing work most of the week and visiting research partners. I went to a private hospital on Tuesday. I've never ever seen so many patients in one place. They were lined up against walls, all the chairs were full. The hospital was very clean and very organised which they would have to be with that many people coming and going. I also went to an engineering college. I had to give a lecture and it was until I got there that I found out it was in front of 120 staff and students. They seemed to like it and it all went well. We had lunch at the college. I was a bit confused at first because one of the professors and I got sat by ourselves at ... read more

Well we are in Chennai. After an interesting train journey (again) we made it. The journey was interesting because we had to share with two other people in the cabin overnight, one of which made constant bodily function noises and assumed that it was ok with us... Possibly the worst night sleep we have both had in ages. Chennai is an interesting place. Busy as all Indian cities are but it doesn't seem to take that long to get anywhere. Maybe we've just lucked out with where we had to go. We ended up changing our accommodation and got that sorted on the first day we were here. Yesterday we sussed out the shopping centres and even found a grocery store in one of them. We brought up big on bottled water but between drinking it ... read more

Hey everyone, Ben here. I got up early this morning to come down and upload some more pics but I wanted to tell everyone what a great job all the team members are doing. Phil is the oldest person we have ever brought to India but his spirit is probably the purest and most full of life. He inspires everyone he talks to and his stories are amazing. His sermon yesterday was a huge encouragement to the marrieds and especially the fathers. When Mitch laughs, everyone smiles. All the younger guys want to grow out their hair now! He is super giving and always looking out for Laurel and Debbie, especially when we are walking through the streets. Laurel is a genius. She loves looking at the food/plants/animals and I just believe whatever she says. Hopefully ... read more

Hey everyone, Ben here! Well it's our last day in Chennai and I've got some guest bloggers. We invited a bunch of the brothers and sisters back to the hotel for lunch and had quite a presence. We were told to quiet down and we humbly apologized but it was a great time! We went to St. Thomas Mount this morning and got a great view of Chennai. From the top of the hill we took a group photo and are getting 300 copies to give to all the families/households in the Chennai Church.
