Chennai. pretty much where I left off the last time in india with andy & joel. Haha. Still abrasive, still grating, still in-your-face. You can nvr be fully blooded when preparing for india can you. This time we got more than we bargained for- by way of Cyclone Laila. Haha its weird how you nvr think such epic stuff don’t ever happen to you; or aren’t suppose to. Like how in china 2 yrs ago we landed in Guangzhou and there was the Sichuan earthquake. The whole world knows, sans you. Haha. This time we were only privy to Laila on the plane (Air India, no less!) made several figure 8s to circumnavigate the brutal winds, finally reached over an hr later. Plans were pretty much blighted owing to the torrential downpour la. More on continuities. ... read more

Towards the end of our time in Chennai, there was a couple that came to the YWAM Chennai base to teach. Their names were Greg and Deb Wiley. They had been in YWAM for 30 years and were currently living in North Carolina but had done ministry in India for many years before that. It was so refreshing and rejuvenating to listen to them speak and teach. We hadn’t had a lot of time where our India team had received spiritual food so we could therefore pour out more spiritual food. Well, we were leaving about a week for Calcutta (Kolkata), a spiritually dark city devoted to Kali the goddess of death and we needed to be strong. As I look back on that Tuesday Morning, I know that God brought Greg and Deb to minister ... read more

Saturday 15 May 2010 I am delighted to be able to write this next blog! It means that we have made our final destination in India before getting the Hillman shipped out to Malaysia; to Port Kulang just 20 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, and ourselves out of India too. I say delighted because the last week has been the most grueling and testing for both of us, from a physical perspective as well as a mental one. My last blog written on 9 May describing some remarkable scenes we saw as the Hindu ceremony of burning bodies was carried out at the burning Ghat beside the River Ganges (the Ganga to the Hindu) seems such a long time ago when I think what both John and I have been through during the last five days. We ... read more

These verses were framed and on the wall in Little Lights Children’s Home and are a great reminder of how we should be living our lives for Christ. Mark 9:37 Whoever receives one such child in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me. Mark 10:14-15 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” Matthew 18:10, 14 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my father who ... read more

Language doesn’t matter, culture doesn’t matter, country doesn’t matter. When people know Jesus and follow him, worshipping and praying with others that don’t even speak the same language, knowing Christ can cut through all of those things that we call barriers. We dress differently from each other. Our cultures are so vastly different. But if you were to look at the hearts of our YWAM Minneapolis India team and the hearts of the Indians at the YWAM Chennai base, and other followers of Christ all around the world, we are all the same. “Same same, but different” as many of the Indians say. Knowing and loving Jesus as Lord and Savior I have seen can cut straight through those barriers. During many worship and prayer times in the YWAM Chennai base, Jesus was there with us ... read more

While in Chennai, our team led three church services. About the middle of the week, we all gathered and had a time of prayer and listening to the Spirit’s leading of who should do which role. We opened up by surrendering the time to Christ and then spent time in silence to listen. While in the time of silence listening for which person should give the testimony and preach, the thought of the drama came to my mind. We were doing a drama about healing to the song “Angus Dei”. Jordan and Tierney then came to my mind. They both were going through different kinds of healing. We were done with putting out the laundry on the roof one afternoon at Little Lights and coming down the steps. Jordan missed one step and sprained her foot. ... read more

On one of our Saturday’s off, all of us took an hour bus ride to the Indian Ocean. It was such a beautiful day out, not to hot or cold and the sun was shining down upon us. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky! While we were there, I felt like a celebrity and I am sure everyone else did as well. So many Indians were looking at us because we were white. They wanted to shake our hands and take pictures with us. Eventually, after all the handshakes, Nate joked that we should start charging 5 Rs. (Rupees) per handshake. He actually said it to some Indians that came up to him to shake his hand. They looked at him in disbelief! I can imagine why. Just think if celebrities here started doing charging, ... read more

Psalm 104: 1, 33-34 Bless the Lord, oh my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. Genesis 26:3a Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you. On a Friday about two weeks into outreach, we let a little loose at Little Lights and it was such awesome fun! We put on once again, a great program for the children and staff of LLCH, but it wasn’t just any program, it was a dance party! It was probably the most fun we had had since starting ... read more

…is our God, sing with me how great, how great is our God.” Those are the beautiful words I heard at Little Lights Childrens’ home two weeks into outreach. While Jono, Kelsie, and I were ironing the school uniforms, the little voices raised that praise to the Lord. It was about 10:30 in the morning and the children were not at school. That is because the festival of harvest was happening (Pongal). It is a Hindu festival that is celebrated all over the world. Instead of participating in it, the future YWAMers were upstairs praying, praising, and learning. After singing praise songs, both common English ones but also Tamil worship, the children and some of the female staff: Daisy, Sathya, Kathra, and Gladia, laid hands on each other and started praying fervently over each other in ... read more
