India was at the top of my list of where I wanted to travel outside of Japan. So...I finally made it. Myself and 6 friends took on a small part of India (Rajasthan) for about 2 weeks in March. India is huge....2 weeks doesn't even come close to the amount of time you'd need to spend there to see and experience it all. We arrived in Delhi around 3am and headed out early the next day to start the journey. We decided to hire our own personal van and driver because it saved time and money in the long run. The downside to this was that these companies have "friends" all over the touristy cities. That means that they always want to take you to certain restuarants, hotels, or shops where they will get commission. Our ... read more

mbaade's visa update: Called the embassy. They say they never received any money. The mailroom had none, so they returned my paperwork. I, of course, know this cannot be true because I put the money order in the envelope myself and I watched the postal employee seal it. So whatever, Indian embassy not helpful. Went to the post office to see if they could tell me whether or not the money order had been cashed so I could see if for some reason it really did not arrive or if it was stolen. But I have to put in a request to see, it costs 3 bucks, and it takes a week. Buddy, I'm leaving in a week! But whatever, put in the request. If it was not cashed then I get a full refund. If ... read more

Oh joy. Frst big hiccup of the summer plans. AA and I went to check our mail tonight. I had a priority package in my box from the consular, AA had a note for an express mail. I thought it was odd that mine was priority since i paid for express.... yeah. Visa app returned, not processed. says there was no money. Which is funny since I have all of the receipts from the money order and my account is now minus $79 that is missing. Gah. Going to call in the morning. AA also needs to check her mail and see if hers was processed. Great. ... read more

Orcha is amazing - lots of red sandstone palaces to explore. There are loads of little stairways and passages all over the place. Reminds me of one of those Escher pictures. Went right up into the top turrets. Bit nervewracking as you get the impression health and safety standards aren't what they are in old Blighty... Lots of vultures perched on top of the domes - they look part of the building, kind of like scrawny gargoyles We're staying in one of the palaces. NO more scummy backpacker life for us! Though the manager did look ascance as we rocked up in the most bizarre-looking rickshaw, all covered in dust and generally looking like shit after a 4 hour bus journey. The waiter here reminds me of Manuel off Fawlty Towers. Off to Agra then Delhi ... read more

We came to Jodhpur by luxury bus with quite comfortable seats, Klaudia even managed to read a book. Once we had not decided upon a hotel beforehand, which turned out to be quite a mistake. Upon our arrival, we were immediately surrounded by an impressive number of rickshaw drivers, who seemed to smell our indecisiveness. One was shouting louder than the other trying to outwit his colleagues. We were quite helpless trying to fend them off until Stephan resorted to a trick, saying that we were taking another bus and would not stay in Jodhpur. He made them laugh when he asked whether we were the only tourists in the city. Once you prove to them your sense of humour, they also show theirs. They left reluctantly, far from being convinced, but polite enough. Then we ... read more

Hi everyone. The main reason we have not posted more to the blog is because getting to it has been much more difficult than anticipated. Here in Jhansi we have had the most reliable connection, but still it is slow, and is served by a UPS which keeps flicking on and off with the power supply to the house. After checking business emails etc. there has not been much time for blogging. I think youll have to wait for the full details after we come back. I have been keeping detailed notes on my laptop so I dont forget anything. Some highlights of recent exciting activity: - Sarat and I drove yesterday! He weaved successfully through a herd of buffalo in a town. I got stuck behind a bus and then passed it, avoiding scooters and ... read more

Delhi, yes Delhi...errrm...don't like it. We arrived early morning after another night train, so not a great deal of sleep and with Rachel not feeling very well, probably not the best preparation for one of the world's most hectic cities, but still. I left Rachel to practice her angry teacher look at the ludicrously unsubtle pickpockets and went to try and book our onward tickets to Amritsar in the Punjab. After asking at one counter I was directed over to the other side of the station, an official looking guide approached me and led me this way and that before telling me that tickets weren't available for our chosen train but he knew someone who could help...two and a half months in India teaches you a thing or two but I decided to see if I ... read more

Bombay: a immensely populated city with some of the niceties of an actual big city that delhi lacked, such as highways, organization, relative cleanliness. we made the stop in transit to goa for 3 days and visited the families of some of our friends: the madons, the nakhudas, and rasheid. we spent some time out by the beach, played some cricket, and visited a live set of a bollywood tv production (daytime soap opera of bombay--very classy ;) ) Goa is absolutely beautiful, we arrived today and will give a full update soon with a photo of our view here, we're staying right on an open beach. until then, brett... read more
