After the epic failure of our first few hours in Delhi, the two of us spent most of the afternoon and evening holed up in our hotel room, watching Indian TV, playing cards, practicing our Hindi numbers, and trying to stay awake to overcome our jet lag. We did make a brief foray out into the streets for lunch. Before we left our hotel room, we loaded up both our backpacks with everything we were afraid to part with if our hotel got broken into - most of our belongings. We got a recommendation of where to go from the front desk at the hotel. He even drew us a map. We walked down the street and found it without too much trouble. It clearly catered to tourists, and was on the pricey side. But the ... read more

After having seen one of the most amazing sights in the world, it’s hard to imagine that anything else is going to compare. Having said this though, our next stop, Amritsar, had the potential to at least be worthy of a couple of days, since everyone we had spoken to that had been here, raved about it. The main reason for this was Amritsar’s gem, The Golden Temple. Being the holiest of Sikh Temples in India, and therefore the world, The Golden Temple generally has between 60,000 and 80,000 visitors per day….and that’s not even on festival days…..to us, that definitely meant this place deserved a visit. In order to get to Amritsar in the Punjab, we boarded what would be our last overnight train, in Agra. Being that this was to be our last overnighter, ... read more

Our vacation was interrupted by the original purpose of our trip. Leo needed to conduct some business. I used these few days to read, catch up on my blogging, shop and get some laundry done. Nothing I need to fill in the details on, but I thought I would share some observations. For your information, We were in the state of Punjab in Chandigarh and in the state of Himachal Predesh in Paonta Sahib. Grey and Brown When we arrived in New Delhi the first time, I thought how grey and brown the city looks. Our first morning, I thought the sky seemed hazy and overcast. After 2 weeks, I now feel that India is just ‘dingy’. According to our local guide, hazy and overcast are the normal weather conditions. We haven’t seen too much sun ... read more

first day of the tour. The flight was leaving at 12:50 from Bangalore airport. It is atleast an hour's drive from home. We planned to leave around 10 am. Madhu had to go to work today. We woke up at 6:45 and had coffee and breakfast early. I tried the masala oats in the morning. It was good but quite spicy for a morning breakfast. We showered and were ready by 9:45 am. It was an uneventful ride to the airport. The new airport is in one corner of the city. Atleast half the section of the roads to airport was under construction. Certain sections of the road near the airport looked very good and professionally done. Check-in went smooth as well. Lots of folks check you and your bags repeatedly. A seal on the tag ... read more

On est arrive a ... read more

Back in Jan/Feb 2009, some friends and I went to India. One of our last stops was the changing of the guard ceremony at the India-Pakistani border. I wrote an entry about the event and it's the most read entry on my blog, at about 1400 hits to date. The website Guard-Changing.com decided they wanted to create a section that included ceremonies outside of the UK. They stumbled upon mine and contacted me about using my blog entry. Of course, I quickly agreed. I'm so excited to be published on their page as well. It's nice to know that my old entry still has value and is still relevant. It's also a pretty high compliment that someone else wants to use my writing on their site! Here's a link to read the article and see their ... read more

We had a great deal of difficulty leaving Dharamsala after only three nights, so we extended our stay there by one day, which meant only one day available for Amritsar. As the bus ride from Dharamsala was reputed to be a ten hour nightmare, we found ourselves once again hiring a taxi to get us to our destination in half the time. The trip was not specifically eventful, but there was a noticeable difference in atmosphere once we entered the territory of Punjab. For one, the language spoken here is Punjabi, not Hindi, which of course, doesn't make a whole lot of difference to us, as we understand neither, but the closer we got to Amritsar, the more prevalent the Sik population became, as it is the city which houses The Golden Temple, sacred destination point ... read more

I’m not at all surprised; we have been travelling for nearly five weeks now and it’s been quite warm every day. But never fear, the dhobi wallah has returned our laundry and we’re as fresh as a daisy once more. It’s the town of Pong we’re heading for today. It derives its living from local resources of fish in the huge reservoir and lumber on the hillsides, and its lakeshore hotel provides a convenient stopover on our taxi ride from Dharamsala to our final destination, Amritsar. Lush fertile valle... read more

What did Ali call it in one of his overdue tales? Oh yes, "blog lag". It must be infectious because here I am, more than two months after our return home, still trying to complete blogs of our travels around India. A lot of water has gone under that proverbial bridge, but my memories of the amazing things we did, the great people we met and the wondrous places we saw remain as clear as the day. Well, most of them do. Any that are a bit murky are quickly brought to mind by my camera, which has a photographic memory! Copious photos and videos, you see, are my crutches as I don't write down things as I go along - perhaps I should as it's said that 190,000 brain cells die each day and, at ... read more

Our northern tour is almost at an end. We've managed to hit all the highlights, some were better experiences than others. We have been taken to too many carpet cooperatives and handicraft studios, where we were assured that their items were unique and not available anywhere else. One guide rushed us through the Taj Mahal, so he could take us to a marble inlay shop, where I had a minor meltdown and everyone in the shop kind of stepped back a few paces! It saved Jane from having to buy a wall hanging. We took the Shaheed Express from Delhi to Amritsar yesterday. Our driver miscalculated the time it would take to get to the Delhi Railway Station from Agra where we were on Wednesday and we had a Mr. Toad's wild ride on National Highway ... read more
