Buoyed by the excitement of our successful tiger safari, we carried on through Rajasthan. Our next stop was Jaipur, the third corner of the Golden Triangle along with Delhi and Agra. It's another city full of great old sights, like the Royal Palace and Amber Fort; all pretty similar to other places we've seen in North India, but still very impressive and worth visiting. My favourite place in Jaipur was Jantar Mantar, which is the ultimate science geek's playground. Jai Singh II, Maharaja of Jaipur in the 1700s, was keen on astronomy and built a huge observatory in Jaipur (and smaller ones in four other cities). It was brilliant - I was pretty terrible at Astronomy during my degree, but enjoyed it enough to still get excited at this place. As well as the worlds largest ... read more

Geo: 31.6309, 74.8716So we ended up staying at St Hildas for 3 days whilst we waited for Sarah and Thomas to catch up, then headed to the border to enter India. Border crossings are never fun but given there is not too much friendliness between Pakistan and India (they hate each other) and the people don't want to travel across it was remarkably quiet. Four foreigners in a large place on our own. Still took about four hours as there were so many lists to complete on the Indian side. Thomas rolled his eyes and asked what do they do with all these lists. I pointed out it gives Indians a job as not actually about the lists really and he got it. Okay after copious quantities of paperwork we were through.Into Amritsar and went to ... read more

Early next morning after breakfast, we took a drive further ahead from one high village to another high altitude village of Spiti valley, Demul. After witnessing two magnificent villages, I had not set any grand expectations for this one in terms of beauty and remoteness. I knew it would turn out to be just as beautiful as the other two if not more. But what I saw completely threw me off in oblivion. At 14,430 feet, Demul redefined remoteness and promised unbounded solitude. Home to less than 50 families, living in utter isolation, this quaint village, cut off from the rest of the world, resembled a state of utopia. Our homestay was situated right in the end towards the corner in isolation. The village amid its patchwork fields producing barley and millet, ... read more

After spending a while at the lake, we made our way back to the village. It was seven in the evening by the time we got to our homestay. We were famished and exhausted. Dinner was served in our guide’s snug little living room where mattresses were laid out on the floor for one to sit on. Interestingly, the main stove was not located in the kitchen but in the living room. This arrangement kept the room warm as a locally modified tin chimney kept the smoke away. Their staple meal consists of Rice, Dal and Chapatis. To my surprise, the women served us Rajma Chawal (my favourite), referred to as Dal. I gorged like a pig like there was no tomorrow. After a good nights sleep, we woke up to another beautiful morning. The next ... read more

I thought Ladakh was my dream destination all this while until I discovered Spiti. After spending just a day in Spiti, I realised that it was on its way to making it onto my Bucket List. It so happened that sometime last year post my Ladakh trip in August, I had bumped into my gym buddy on the train while traveling to Chandigarh from New Delhi (I call it serendipity now and you'd know why). So ironically, we ended up sitting together which seemed more like a magnetic pull because she's just as much a travel buff as I am. The conversation took an interesting turn and we got talking about Spiti. She told me how hard and challenging it was to get to Kaza i.e. the capital of Spiti and that it's one of the ... read more

After a few hours of burning the road down from Manali, we made our way through the popular tourist attraction Rohtang Pass (surprisingly, this time around it had a lot of snow). That was followed with a quick stop for a light breakfast at a dhaba. Soon thereafter, we continued driving through the lush green mountains and as we drove deeper into the valley, these mountains transformed into a barren and rocky landscape. The roads got narrower and dirtier with water streams meandering through. Up until now, my friend and I were busy tripping on music, clicking photographs here and there, making conversations with our driver and sitting as comfortably as it could get when we were caught off-guard. Our senses came alive and we peeped our heads out of the window and stared at the ... read more

Our trip to Amritsar got off to a great start with the train arriving about 3 hours late at Amritsar, so that we could enjoy an extra long sleep in the 2 berth cabin, and arrive well rested in daylight. Result! We then went straight for breakfast in a totally vegetarian, Mcdonalds. (Strange how familiar brands, even if nasty, can seem appealing when away from home!). Straight after this we went to the Golden Temple. We were both really impressed by its beauty; and also by how clean and well ordered it is. Loads of visitors, but an unhurried atmosphere, facilities to leave your shoes and your baggage before entering without long queues, and free literature outside on Sikhism. We spent a few hours there until it was time to check in at our hostel. This ... read more

K pozdnímu obědu se opět vracíme do jídelny, pak balíme věci a využ... read more

Geo: 31.6223, 74.8796Ráno se budíme kolem 4té, dobalujeme věci a vyrážíme ven, kde má ve 4:30 čekat TAXI. Překvapivě tu nikdo nečeká. Volám tedy kolem 4:40 a budím člověka, který volá jinému aby nás vyzvedl. Ještě pár telefonátů a už se někdo kodrcá. Super... Za chvilku v... read more
