On the toy train from Kalka to Simla November 25, 2014 ...or if I was being very unkind, Basildon! It is the capital of Hayana and the Punjab and has the highest per capita income in India. It really is unlike any other part of India we have been to. The traffic is orderly, the centre is one long park and on the whole people mostly adopt western dress. Many people speak English. Chandigarh like Milton Keynes is a new town. In 1947 partition of India and Pakistan split the Punjab in two. The original capital Lahore ended up in Pakistan so Indian Punjab needed a new capital. Their solution was to hire Le Corbusier to design one for them. This was the 50's and the age of concrete. As new towns in England have found ... read more

On the bus to Chandigarh November 23, 2014 We picked the Jugaadus Eco hostel (see hostelworld and tripadvisor and contact direct to get the best price) because it was the number one of Trip Advisor and for once were not disappointed. As it is with most establishments it is the personality of the person running it which makes it special, in this case 'Baba' Sanjay Sodhi. Sanjay was a 27 year old local who had got some capital doing IT jobs in Chandigarh, Bangalore and Amsterdam before travelling in Europe and India. He had opened the backpacker hostel five months previously because there were none in Amritsar. Sanjay creates a community feel by using a system of donations rather than fixed prices. He also runs excellent tours and we participated in several. The best thing for ... read more

Today I just wanted to visit some kind of holy place which will bring a kind of peace to my mind. So I was traveling in search of such a place (as I was sure about finding one!) and suddenly a place just grabbed my attention, the golden temple of India. As its name is golden temple it was no surprise to know that they used 10 kg gold to build their lotus shaped tomb. But the fact that really touched my heart is that the stair to enter this temple goes downward rather than going upward (like all other temples) to eradicate arrogance from human mind. And they also have four gates to enter into the temple to symbolize that people from every walk of life are welcome here. Whenever we think about a holy ... read more

Though the preliminary arrangements of hotel booking was done well in advance, there was an excitement in my mind on 16 Aug 2014 when I was sitting in the Chennai airport Lounge waiting for Indian Airlines flight heading for Delhi. The flight took off at the right time at 6:40 AM. After asking for the windows seat and enjoying the take off sitting besides the wings, the breakfast was served after one hour. The flight landed at the Delhi airport before which I took a nap around 9:15. After completing the formalities I went to the designated gate for catching the Amritsar flight. The flight took off around 1:00 and reached at 2:00. A light refreshment was provided on board. I immediately booked a cab at the airport and drove straight to the hotel and checked ... read more

Αλλου όμως ... read more

We made it out of Shimla on Tuesday morning. We hired a private car to take us down the mountain to Chandigarh. Total cost for the new Toyota Elios and a very good driver was $49 US. The ride took 3 hours and with every kilometer we breathed easier due to the increase in oxygen and the knowledge that we were a kilometer closer to leaving India. We came to like, if not love, Shimla. It is a beautiful locale and in the end we met some very kind and helpful people but not enough to offset the tremendous hassle of traveling in this most vexing of lands. I would like to return someday to hike the Kashmir area but only with another person capable of taking care of themselves. Somebody like Noah, Greg, Reed, Montgomery, ... read more

Weds 2nd April it’s 5:30am and we’re camping at Mrs Bhandari’s Guest house in Amritsar. It’s an old colonial house built in 1930 by Mrs B’s mother and uncles, with a walled large vegetable garden, camping area and flower beds just outside the bustle of the city centre. During the night, there’s been a chorus of dogs barking over the wall, a puppy yelping over and over, a wind storm then faint rain. I thought of my friend Tom in England who loves to listen to the rain and in a tent in India – it’s very calming. Now, I’m sitting under a lit canopy by the shower area. There is someone chanting prayers over the wall. Already tuktuks are whirring by and the birds are squawking. The sky is a mid grey of early dawn. ... read more

When you get out of the train station you see the yellow bus. Free transport to the Golden Temple. Religious songs sang on the bus all the way to the Temple . Free trolley and luggage services at the entrance. Toilets are free. Perhaps the largest kitchen , serves food free for hundred thousand people a day. People work voluteerally at different services of the Temple . By the help of a volunteer guide we took an easy visit to all areas of the Temple . Without guide you have to wait 3 or 5 hours in ques to reach to the main pray hall on the island. The floor is marble and very cold with naked foot. They put walking carpets early in the morning and take them away when the heat of the sun ... read more

16th December Early departure and goodbye to Mr Harinder as we were catching the Shabati Express train to Amritsar. Mr Harinder had lots of our stuff as we were fedexing all our wedding gear plus a bit of shopping back to Uk and he was taking care of it. This was a 6 hour train journey but due to really bad fog, turned into 7 hours. The train had seen better days but was comfortable and as we were in 1st class we had great service though Sal in particular was not keen on drinking anything as the horrors of what the loo might be like weren't even up for consideration. We were given litre bottles of water, then we each got a flask of boiling water and cups to make our own tea and coffee. ... read more

AMRITSAR Population: 1.1 million PUNJAB Population: 27.7 million Area: 50,000 sq km Our goal in getting out of Delhi as quickly as possible was to find a smaller, less chaotic place in which to calm down and find our bearing as we adjusted to the life of a foreign traveller in India. Upon arriving in Amritsar, we soon realized that we'd jumped out of the frying pan and into the fire. With a population of merely 1 million people, Amritsar has 1/16th the population of Delhi. Nevertheless, it is every bit as crowded, congested and hectic to travel in as Delhi, with comparable air pollution - it's just tinier in size. Coming off the bus, we were immediately set on upon by a group of men crying, "Rickshaw! Rickshaw! Taxi! Taxi! Golden Temple! Golden Temple!" Even ... read more
