After a day in Delhi recovering from the long flights from the U.S., Peggy and I took a five-hour train to Chandigarh in a fairly comfortable air conditioned car. We spent two nights at the Red Fox Hotel to break up the journey before flying to Kullu, since we'd read that Chandigarh is India's first planned city, and according to India City Walks, is "a benchmark of modernisation, and is a rich, prosperous and green city, rightly called 'the city beautiful'!" Of course, everything is a matter of context. We were, in fact, able to (somewhat) walk safely along sidewalks and berms to Sukhna Lake and to Nek Chand's Rock Garden, and everyone surprisingly stopped at the red lights. The lake was more or less a muddy reservoir with pleasant gravel trails alongside, but the rock ... read more

What a full on day of contrast yesterday was. There are many monuments and statues around Amritsar, to various important people but also just because, like the ones depicting dancers we saw on the way to the Golden Temple, the primary site for Sikhism. Apart from being a stunning complex with pristine, hurt-your-eyes white marble buildings and paving surrounding the rich golden temple which sits in the middle of a lake, the whole atmosphere is quite special. People calmly go about their devotions, praying, purifying themselves in the water amongst the large crowd. No one is bothered by anyone else or by tourists taking photos. It is a very peaceful and tolerant environment. The kitchens provide thousands of free meals 24 hours a day and there are permanent and volunteer staff. We get a tour through ... read more

We had a slightly slower start after the excitement yesterday. Fortified by a breakfast of scrambled egg and vegetable curry, we set off on an auto rickshaw to Mata Lal Devi Mandar Temple in Model Town. The trip wasn't scheduled on our tour, but we had some free time and we wanted to see as much of Amaritsar as we could. It wasn't listed in the Rough Guide, but our guide had suggested it would be worth a visit and I am so glad he did - it was fantastic. Set in the middle of a busy market, we wouldn't have come across it on our own. The Temple was extraordinary - a complete assault on all our senses. It was a very humid day, and as we got to the outside to remove our shoes, ... read more

We started our day with a trip to the Jawlianwalla Bagh Massacre Memorial garden. situated outside the Golden Temple. The gardens were the site of an atrocity carried out by the British troops in 1919. Under the leadership of General R Dyer, the British troops opened fire on a group of unarmed peaceful demonstrators, killing over 350 men women and children and injurying many hundreds of others leaving them with life changing disability. The gardens are sombre, and dominated with the eternal flame monuments to those who lost their lives. There is also a martyr's well which is preserved as the site where many lost their lives trying to escape from the bullets. The garden also pays homage to national hero Udnam Singh, who avenged the murder of thee innocent people by the assassination of Dyer ... read more

Here we are in the Holy city Amritsar. We arrived this afternoon after a surprisingly straightforward journey. We took an overnight 8 hour flight from Heathrow to Delhi and were well looked after by Jet Airlines, although I must admit to cabin envy walking through the luxurious pods in business class to find my seat in economy. Despite the basic airline seat, I read a book and slept well. A swift and straightforward domestic flight took us from Delhi to Amritsar where we were met by our very energetic guide Rackesh. It has been over 30 years since I visited India and I am thrilled to be back. I had forgotten what the roads are like, and hardly 5 minutes out of the airport , we saw families of five squeezed on to motor bikes without ... read more

Today I went in the region of Punjab, in the city of Amritsar to see the famous golden temple and it was awesome it is literally a temple made of gold! Of course its real name isn't gold temple but "Harmandir Sahib" meaning the abode of God. We can definitely say that it is one of the most sacred places in India. I remember a sentence of a guide saying that this temple commemorates a lot of Sikh event and that it is a bringer of peace. As you know, i love drawing the places that i visit so i drew this one! Today was a good day!... read more

We ended up staying in Srinagar for a few days longer than we planned when we got back from the trek, partly because we were tired and partly because we were dreading the 12 hour jeep journey back to Jammu. If it was 12 hours of driving it wouldn't be so bad, but most of the time you're sat still in traffic. Which again wouldn't be so bad if there was a reason for the traffic, other than Indians not being able to drive. The road is a windy one, through the mountains, at sections it's a few hundred metres drop from the side of the road to the river below, and people think that overtaking is acceptable. There's enough traffic on this road to fill a motorway back home, lined up on both sides of ... read more
