Pronounced slightly different here, like the Americans say Carrib-ean. Quite like this idea of my own pivate driver/gofer to get around, the edge has certainly been taken of the romantic view of train travel. You better make sure your bum is on the seat an hour before you leave, coz even with a reservation you are likely to be challenged, I've see some seats change hands (or is that bums) four times before the train pulls out. On sleepers the rules are the bottom bunk shares a seat with the two other sleepers above during the day, but they plead ignorance to this and you are orced to lie on your bunk. My new driver to Kalka is Parween, not so talkative, but that's fine as I'm doped up with paracetamol and just want to sleep. ... read more

Having avoided the infamous Delhi Belly, I have picked up a nasty virus doing the rounds, I am also a bit worried by the news that Dengue Haemorrhagic fever has hit Delhi, which concerns me as it is transmitted by mosquito rather than contact. Out of 56 cases 4 people have died within the first day. Had a quick look at the symptoms, cold like fever and nose bleed are two that match nicely so having a day in bed to try to recover- have changed my travel plans again. Will be off to Shimla in the Himalayas next which was meant to be last on my list, and have scratched Varanasi due to the Dysentery there. So in the absence of a travelogue, did you know?...Hiduism is "the religion of 300 million deities" although an ... read more

Day 1 - Still in Old Delhi, we woke at 6am and headed for New Delhi train station for our 7:20am train to Amritsar. Here we met two lost souls (a young English couple) who were unable to purchase tickets to get them to the same destination as ourselves - the reason being that the ticket booth was not yet open and would not be until after the train had departed! We advised the couple to board the train without tickets and hope for the best, which turned out to be not a problem despite having to pay a little more than expected. Aboard the train we were delighted to find that we were provided with free chai and a delicious omelette breakfast accompanied by chips and peas! After six and a half hours travelling we ... read more

Got up as usual at 4:45am for which we all have got accustomed to by now, we got ready by 5:30 am and then packed all our luggages on our bikes and left at 6:30am. Rode through curvaceous and mountainous roads between Mandi and Chandigarh which was painstakingly slow because of the curvaceous roads with lot of gradients added to which heavy truck traffic and reached Chandigarh by about 1:30pm. Ofcourse we stopped for a quick lunch on the way just at the outskirts of Chandigarh because we didn’t want to waste time. As soon as we reached Sector 28-D, we checked into Hotel white Palace who gave us a palatial suite with 4 beds, a couch and a dining table. Then we all quickly packed all the luggage to be sent by truck and went ... read more

Got up at 4:40am and we all got ready by 6:15 and settled the hotel bills and when we were about to take the luggage to our bikes there was a huge down pour and delayed our start. Luckily it got reduced after about 45 minutes. Though it stopped raining we loaded the entire luggage and wore our rain coats and got fully suited up and left after taking a few snaps in front of the hotel. We finally left at 7:30am. We drove through the well structured roads of Chandigarh and Mohali. A few minutes into the ride and rain gods decided to come back again. Once we were out of Mohali we rode through kharar, Morinda, furore, Khamnon, Samrala and reached Jullandar by about 9am. At Morinda though the gate at the railway crossing ... read more

That was a bloody awful night bus, it was 5am somewhere on the outskirts of Amritsar. We jumped into a tuk tuk to the Golden Temple and after much walking around asking about accommodation, and dealing with Storms lost sleep deprived, hunger driven wobbly she was throwing, we bunked down in the free Temple accommodation for a few morning hours kip. Lunch was on the house (of god), you have to give it to the Sikh’s, they know how to run a large operation. The Temple kitchen ran 24/7 and must have fed a 1000 people an hour. Hundreds of devotees contributed cooking and washing up. And the thali was pretty damn good, and the rice pudding had us craving for seconds. The Golden temple itself is an amazing piece of devotion, gold sparkling in the ... read more

Bear Hugged in the Punjab – Khajuraho, Varanasi, Amritsar, & Delhi – India Hey guys, I just realized that I’m sitting in Aqaba, Jordan and I haven’t still haven’t written about my last two weeks in India, so I’ve decided that I’d better throw something together before I forget everything that happened. So to get back up to date, I thought I’d share just a few small highlights and then wrap up with a few comments on India in General. Kama Sutra Temples – Khajuraho For those of you who like to look through my pictures, you’ll notice that the first set of photos is just a wee bit scandalous. The pictures are from the temples at Khajuraho (sometimes known as the Kama Sutra Temples). These temples highlights some of the best (and certainly the most ... read more

Last India blog! Thursday night was reception and the actual wedding ceremony, so we got dressed in our traditional indian clothing (a sari for me and a kurta for Jonathan). The sari was very difficult to figure out, and it wasn't until we got to the groom's house that I was told it was on backwards! So, a few of the women there were kind enough to help me out, but even they had trouble! At the reception another Indian women stopped to "fix" me, and then it happened again a few hours into the reception. I didn't feel too bad, everyone said how hard it was to get it right! The sari was beautiful, the bride's aunt picked both of our outfits out for us, which was so kind! Now to the reception. WOW! It's ... read more
