Leaving Ahmedabad I feel excited and relieved at the same time. Relieved because we’re going back to calm and order. You may not think that Johannesburg is calm and orderly most times, but once you’re experienced the streets of India, anything else will seems tranquil. This week I found myself seeking the quiet and cleanliness of our hotel room. The day overwhelmed my senses and left me exhausted every night. We filled our days with some touring of ‘Step Well’, which is a 5 story ‘walk-in’ well, and a tour of Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashram where his ashes are scattered. Our driver was much obliging, pulling over on the side of the road allowing me to take a photo of a camel pulling a bogie (trailer). We spent the afternoon looking at apartments in an area called ... read more

I'm in Ahmedabad now. I don't know if it's the fact that I finally left the state of Rajhastan, or the fact that I am hanging out with my London friend Fernando, or the effort I made to stay positive to attract more positivity - I firmly believe in this - but finally things seem to have turned for the better. Yesterday I had a great day hanging around the city with Fernando. The highlight was visiting a fort, whose name I don't even remember, and sharing tea and a laugh with the government officers who were working there. They hardly spoke any English but were ever so friendly. Then at night we went to a CS meeting and finally saw CS as it should be - friendly people wanting to socialise and do things as ... read more

Een vlugge rekensom leerde me dat ... read more

Before came to Ahmedabad I stopped at Palitana(@110m) for a night, climbed up the 600m hill in town where a clustered of Jain temple were on top, said to had 863 temples up there, and some could dated back to the 11th century. Same like the Girnar Hill in Junaga, numbering along the stairway, a total 3200 steps lead you to the top, it was more alike a fort with wall surrounded the temple complex, I got up there by 5:30pm and was told the gate will be close at 6. Doesn't matter as I just wanted to stretched my legs after a lazy week in Diu, and aiming for the sunset, but as the climbing was from the eastern slope, so the hilltop fort was the only place could see the sunset, now I couldn't ... read more

Our two night stop in Ahmadabad was more out of necessity then curiosity. We wanted to break-up the trip between Mumbai and Udaipur (which would have been 20 hours on the train) so we thought, why not stop for a couple days in the city where Gandhi called home for 15+ years of his life, and where his ashram still stands today. Gandhi is EVERYWHERE in India…he’s on every single note of currency, his statements and sayings are posted all over the place (toilets, train stations, businesses, walkways and taxis) and his happy, humble face pops up in random places all the time. So why not visit “the house that Gandhi built”? Even with the Gandhi Ashram, Ahmadabad is not a touristy town and we saw maybe another dozen foreigners during our stay. But what we ... read more

Ahmedabad and Diu. How to describe this city? Located in the Gujarat, Ahmedabad is mainly a Muslim city; you can hear the call to the prayer every day. A very interesting fact is that most of the mosque has some elements of both religions: Hindu and Muslim, due to the Sultan Mahmud Begara that married a Hindu wife, the result is very interesting. We also went to the Hatheesingh Temple, which is absolutely beautiful, built in 1848, for the religion of Jain, a branch of the Hinduism, I learn that they are vegan and they eat a very limited quantity of vegetable to preserve life, this is definitely not for me. Other than that the city is very crowded, streets are smalls and the smog is just everywhere, the pollution is omnipresent due to the chemical ... read more

Finding ourselves in Ahmedabad, capital of Gujarat, for twenty four hours we tooka whistle stop tour of sights far and near with the local tuk tuk driver who lived next to the homestay we were in. An ancient haveli restored with French money through the Municipal corporation. The best value meal ever we consumed at the Gujarat run hotel opposite Gandhi's Ashram. Which impressed me most? The peace of the ashram and the history of Gandhi and his movement outlined on story boards, seeing his simple abode or the $1.10 full meal? Those of you knowing my eye for a bargain will probably be able to answer that one. We walked down an ancient step well finding intricate carvings and cool shade. Coming south the weather was certainly warming up. We followed another dusty road to ... read more

So Mt. Abu is beautiful and full of Indian couples on thier honeymoons and on family holidays, so there isn't too much poverty here as it is obviously for the slightly richer side of life up here, they sell wippy ice cream which is flavoured by a big squidgy dollop of syrup ontop, quite nice but sickening too! went on a few walks upto a big rock called toad rock ( for its looks like a toad about to leap into the lake) and then to honeymoon point which has the most amazing views and hurrendous drops! As people are holidaying they all want to take a photo of you or with you, which you should be able to decline if you don't want to be in the photo, but this seemed to fill them with ... read more
