Can it be less than 24 hours til take off? Still trying to figure out how many suitcases. I want to divide up the sewing kits (see Drummer Bill's blog) and books, etc. in case one of the suitcases disappears. So, that decision in the morning. Decided that I had better "feed" my sourdough starter and freeze some of it because I just don't know if it wants to be untended for 31 days. So, the house smells great with English muffins. How did this all happen?? Last August, our good friend, Dr. Ilaben Pathak visited our home in Woodbourne on her way home after being elected one of the four international vice presidents of the Women's International League of Peace and Freedom (WILPF). I explained that we live in the country, and she explained that ... read more

Selve ... read more

Today we are in Ahmedabad, the largest city in the state of Gujarat, western India. It's a very unpleasant place and one which we cannot wait to leave, in 3 hours time on an express train to Mumbai.... A week ago, we arrived in Udaipur after the bus ride from hell. 14 hours is a long time on a bus where we didn't have the foresight to book a sleeper cabin. The seats were broken in the laid back position, really not very comfortable for a long period of time. It was hot but not too bad because it was 4pm and Jaisalmer cools down quickly in the evening. By 11:00pm we're were at the edge of our sanity and were 'looking forward' to a night in these seats. At the rest stop, one of the ... read more

Although we missed the Grand Prix on tv, I assure you that we have not missed A Grand Prix. With the speed, narrow roads, sharp corners, rapid overtaking and close distance to other drivers, I feel like I am living the grand prix. To say the driving has made short work of my nerves is an understatement. It is not unusual to have cars driving towards you in the fast lane on the highway. Nor is it unusual to drive right in the middle of the road, with the line in the centre of your car. Indicators are not used, but hooters are most definitely your most valuable tool. We spent the weekend in Mt Abu in Rajastan province. Gordon was told about the place from someone at work and everyone has said that it is ... read more

The Taxi Ride from the Airport to the Hotel My flight landed at 2:30am, so I figured I'd have relatively smooth sailing through traffic for the taxi ride to downtown from the airport. I just didn't realize how smooth. Of the twelve red traffic lights we hit on the way into town, we stopped for precisely NONE of them. I don't think we even slowed down for any of them. In fact, the only time we stopped the whole way (a trip of ~30 mis) was at a green turn arrow because the two cars in front of us were stopped blocking both lanes while having a chat! The First Day (Mumbai) I normally book my first night's hotel when I'm flying into some place just so I have somewhere to go when I land, but ... read more

Another night, another train. Zoe and I are starting to get fairly acquainted with platforms, train numbers and oh…the staring. We left Jaisalmer close to midnight and had a pretty short journey to Jodhpur. We got in at the crack of dawn (literally) and stood about for an hour or so waiting for our connection. All aboard again, we discovered we had an AC2 compartment of four berths to ourselves. This helped us get some more sleep and make the time pass on the way to Ahmedabad, our next destination. The trip was largely uneventful – cards, cards, nap, mouse (our feet stayed up for a while), arrival. After rolling in past Ghandi’s ashram at Sabarmati, the first thing we noticed about Ahmedabad (or at least the train station) was the stench of urine – one ... read more

Train: Ahmedabad tp Goa. Journey to Goa Leg 2. So we got on the train at 11am as planned (been quite lucky with delays so far, only had the one) and tried to get settled. We knew we wouldn't be put together in the same cabin this time, but Laura stayed with me until whoever was in my cabin arrived. It was so quiet- then an entire family tipped up. 3 sets of mums and dads and 5 kids all squeezed into a four man cabin. Laura made a swift exit to hers. I'm using this holiday to catch up on my reading because I don't really get the chance at home. I've just started the Twilight books so I buried myself in that. About 4 hours later Laura pops her head round declaring she's had ... read more

Train: Udaipur to Ahmedabad. Journey to Goa Leg 1. It gets a bit confusing now, but basically today we woke up in Udaipur. We were going to sleep on the night train to get to Ahmedabad. (Leaving at 7pm, arriving at 4am). We had a 7 hour wait in Ahmedabad to then get the 11am train to Goa for leg 2 of the journey. We would not arrive in Goa until 8am the following morning. That's a LOT of train time! So we woke up today after a nice lie-in thinking that we'll just mooch about until we have to get the train at 7pm turned out- it turned out to be one of our most eventful days yet and I apologise now because this blog entry will be hefty! It all started off so innocently. ... read more

A good bus ride to Ahmedabad, I think it was about 10 hrs and we managed to get some sleep and arrived as everyone was setting up shop. Everyone was smiling and welcoming and we grabbed some chai before heading to Cadillac Lodge... the only 'G' rated hotel in our guidebook. The room was 350Rps per night and was really not great, we did in fairness get a TV with Star movies but the toilet was a drop with no flush, the sink was communual (not cool when you see how much the Indians spit) and the beds were solid. Anyway, we head off round the corner and get on a local 60Rp tour bus with all the Indians, first stop was a Lake which other than being very pretty and a nice morning stroll I'm ... read more
