This was second stop in Gujarat !! A small town named 'Paatan'.....little known , but archeologicaly rich ! This is about 2 hrd from Ahmedabad, and taxis/buses etc are easily available .... I was surprised as to how did people during that time understand the concept of air-conditioning. This place (though in ruins) is actually a "centralised air-condidtioned resort for Summers" for the royal family. The main source of water is a well, around which the rooms were built. each room has intricately carved window panels and doors, all set in the right direction to increase the flow of air and maintain temperature. Wow !! The coolest rooms were to the royal family and the ones little farther , to their minsters... The angle at which the mid-day (hottest) sun rays could penetrate the complex, was ... read more

Situated 18 kms North of Ahmedabad main City, at the crossing called Adalaj, which is a tri section, this place cover s a very large area. The entire Vav is split into 5 levels. The Vav has pillars and walls which are ornately carved. There are gaps in each level which take you to the lower level. Leaves, flowers, fishes, birds and other designs fill the walls and pillars. At the entrance of the Vav there is a small Temple of Mata Rani. Everyone who visits this Temple prays for the Spirit of Rani Rudabai whose spirit is supposed to still lurking here. Hundreds of years ago, step-wells were fundamental to life in the driest parts of India. These structures, hewn from stone, provided year-round access to groundwater, and were a focal point for the community. ... read more

m back for a few days!! :) and fortunately had two nice weekends to spend... Made a 2-day trip to these rustic ruins in Gujarat, and covered this spectacular heritage site....The Sun Temple of Modhera MODHERA: 99 kms from Ahmedabad, the 11th century Sun temple of Modhera is easily one of the finest examples of devotional in western India. Built by the Solanki Rajput kings, the aid of donations from the people, the temple features carved torana arches mounted on kirti stambhas (pillars of victory) as the entrances, a large rectangular stepped with 108 smaller shrines, an exquisite 52 pillared portico, beautiful domed central portion and a sanctum sanctoruim designed so that the sun light fell on the bejewelled statue of the God, specially at sunrise during the equinox. The exterior of temple is carved with ... read more

What a week I have had. I have trekked many kilometres over the Gujarat state as we made our way to the marriage in Vadodara (Baroda). Many experiences and much exhaustion I have acquired. Most recently I have been the victim of theft unknowingly. All my money and credit cards stolen without me knowing in a place that one would least likely find a thief in my thoughts anyway. But this is India and when you have hundreds and hundreds of people at a wedding who really knows who is who? It could have been when well dressed Indian ladies crowded me demanding photos with me, it could have been while having bag over shoulder walking and mingling through the reception? This has now brought my journey to a holt and my return to Australia as ... read more

We are now sat in Udaipur having just spent a couple of days in Ahmedabad, the capital of the Gujarat region. As we have reached the halfway point of our time in India, and as we have had a relatively quiet couple of days, we thought we would try to describe some of our thoughts on the everyday India that we have experienced. This is kind of our 'exhale' after the 'deep breath' of landing in India! We'd read lots about what to expect here, but we don't think anything can fully prepare you for the utter chaos that is this country. Streets/Roads People in Europe will say that the roundabout in Paris around the Arc-de-Triumphe is as crazy as roads can get. EVERY road here is like that, with added; cows, goats, dogs, pigs, chickens, ... read more

Yesterday we got up early to check out of our prime room and headed out on a MP3 guided walking tour of the old city. We felt like proper tourists with headphones on gazing up at the buildings. The tour took us from an old mansion past a really old mosque with beautiful carved windows along past some British art deco to the old town fort. At the fort the tour started to really prove fantastic as it directed us into a tiny courtyard, up a flight of stairs through as office and up to the top of the old fort. We were a little apprehensive about trespassing but the voice on the player said don't be scared you are allowed. The top of the fort was spectacular with views across the city and an amazing ... read more

This morning we arrived in Ahmedabad via the sleeper train from Mumbai. We are a little cross eyed and hungry but excited to be here. As we arrived so early (6.30 am) very little is open so we are yet to get breakfast. The train was quite a good experience (our expectations were not high!) and we both got quite a bit of sleep in our tiny bunks. We also caught our first auto rickshaw into town to find a hotel. We are now off to explore the city and hopefully see some of the kite festival that is supposed to be on this month. It is quite cool here and we were suprised to find everyone dressed in jackets, scarves and beanies, it is not really Canberra weather!... read more

Yes we are just NOW packing. We are last minute people, you know. We have about a week and a few days until we leave and packing is just a mess. Aside from mine, Arya's and Nikki's bags we also have bags with goodies for the family. I dont even want to know what the baggage fees will cost once we weigh our bags at the airport. Anyway, I set up this blog so that once I am in India I can post what is going on, what I am doing, etc. I am excited to go but a little nervous as you all might guess. I hope to post a "post" every day or every other day and put pictures and videos on here too. Feel free to post comments or to email me at ... read more

I've always been interested in who reads my blog. A few years ago when I was backpacking through South America, I started emailing stories back to some friends and to the office. It took a while, but eventually I heard that people enjoyed them and were passing them on to others. Of course none of the people who just hit delete told me about it, but I figured they can just mark me as spam and let their mail client deal with it automatically. (I admit - the pictures in this post have nothing to do with the content. But the maps at the bottom do. Can you guess what this picture is? answer below this post.) Then I switched to blogging since it was the 'in' thing to do. Actually the real reason was that ... read more
