Just when you hoped that the transport complaints in this blog were over, think again! The overnight bus we took from Mumbai (a mere five hours after our arrival to Mumbai from Chennai) was a killer. For starters, the bus was non A/C, and, at this point in our journey, the deadly Indian heat was really starting to penetrate everything. Second, it took us nearly 4 hours to just get out of Mumbai as our bus would move at a snail’s pace through gridlocked traffic for 30 minutes before stopping at dodgy looking travel agencies along the side of the road for another 30 minutes to pick more people up. So, the first 4 hours we sat in the early evening heat on a non A/C bus in a sleeper compartment with virtually no breeze. After ... read more

We've left Rajastan now and we've decided to head south again. The trouble with travelling in India is that you can never do anything on the spur of the moment. You have to plan everything days in advance. Not much fun if you want to change plans on a whim. Going from Udaipur we wanted to go to a resort area called Diu in the south of Gujarat. Well that would have taken over 24 hours by train so we thought let's go somewhere else. The trains all had waiting lists and the flights were too expensive so we took the bus. We thought that a sleeper bus would be a good idea. The problem was that it didn't have a toilet and there was only one stop, 3 1/2 hours into the trip. Add that ... read more

The bus stops here.... So, my plans have changed for maybe the tenth time and I am leaving in a few days. I had been planning on attending a peace conference in Pakistan on the 2nd of April and was going to return to the states shortly after. Then, the conference got postponed because of some bombings and I found out that the ticket I had planned to use for returning home was not available and that I needed to use my original ticket which leaves in three days. Good thing I wasn't off meditating in the Ashram without internet access. Things work out though and I will be home on Friday morning, if the plan doesnt change again, he he. I am sorry I have written so little. Its as if I live in Disneyland ... read more

Goa is like Neverland for hippies and ravers. It's been trying to clean up its partying image but I'm not sure how well that's going... However, the beaches are very pretty and fresh seafood is always nice, so it wasn't a bad place to spend a few days. We mostly just bummed around Anjuna. There's a famous flea market there every Wednesday and we just happened to arrive Tuesday afternoon, so we got to explore that a bit. I picked up a nice pearl necklace for about USD$12! We rented a scooter for a couple of days and rode it over to a nearby beach called Little Vagator. It was such a nice day that we decided to lay out for a bit (If you know me, you know that I have many stories that start ... read more

Hi from Ahmedebad........again, Well it has taken me almost a month, but I am starting to get the hang of being Indian. Several people have laughed and commented on how Indian I am at my heart. It took me awhile to figure out why I was so disoriented, but then I realized....its because everything is different. When you get down to it, we are all just people, but the culture is completely different in every way. It took me awhile to get the hang of all the small things, like how to eat and drink and use the bathroom differently, but the big things as well, how to get around, how to feel safe, how to talk through the language barrier. I have acquired the Indian head bobble and now can use it effectively, am learning ... read more

Dolazimo do Swaminarayan templa. U centru grada, muk.

Hi From Ahmedebad and Manav Sadhna, I am living in Ahmedebad for the month and working with an NGO called Manav Sadhna, which is an associate of the Ghandi Ashram and is located on the same grounds. Ahmedebad is one of the worst crowded, polluted and slum ridden cities in India.....ah, home. So it has taken me a little while to get grounded enough to write. India is wild, but not safari wild, wild in the way that it makes you realize you have lived your whole life in a whisper and have been surrounded by sterile, cold, panes of glass. India breaks that glass like a full throated note from an opera singer and makes all that shattering sparkle at your feet. Its really something and it has knocked me off my feet again and ... read more

Nicky: That beautiful meal overlooking the lake wasnt so beautiful for long as it kept me up all night, on the train, while I was being sick. I am not going to go into detail just to say that it wasn't pleasant, I am trying not to remember much of it, but I do have vague recollections of launching myself kamakazee style from the top bunk where i was sleeping still wrapped in my sleeping bag, one handed and half shuffling, half running the 50 yards to the toilet (which was barely nice enough to wee in let alone anything else) several times in the night. My bad stomach continued until we arrived in Ahmedabad at 5.30am, while we waited for our next train, all through the journey to Mumbai - which was in what I ... read more

Ahmedabad Well after an average length drive down a dull 4 lane toll freeway we arrived at Ahmedabad. Unfortuantely I came down with the cold on the way and the city air was as bad or worse than Delhi. Out came the N95 anti-viral surgical mask I brought from home which really helped with the breathing! Missed touring both mosques and the large stepped well. No pictures at all worth sharing. Glad to fly on to Mumbai.... read more

One of the longest hotel corridors must be located in Jamnagar at the Ashiana hotel and our room was at the end of this mile long hallway... But you can say it was worth the walk, it was a big spacious room and with a view of what could have been a nice park, were it not for the usual piles of garbage... Instead it was a haven for mosquitos! Jamnagar was where Tori was going to leave us to go back to Calcutta and fly home... Knowing her love for birds, we decided to go to Khijadiya bird sanctuary the last day before she left. Tori was in her element, sneaking around, blending in with the birds... We on the other hand were like elephants compared to her... We wisely decided to retreat into one ... read more
