We departed Udaipur and after a relatively painless daytime bus trip south, we were soon struggling through the hot and dusty streets of Ahmedabad, trying to find some habitable accommodation. This was our penultimate stop before getting to Mumbai and for Thailand in a few days time. First stop was the city museum, a ‘must see’ according the guide book, but when the rickshaw driver had no idea where it was, nor many of the people he asked for directions we started to get suspicious. When we finally found it, it appeared to be a deserted multistory car-park, but to be fair, there was some interesting history about Gandhi and with only 2 other people and the security guard there was no problem getting to see the exhibits. As we were about to leave the ... read more

Our goal in India, for this week is to get to Ajanta Caves from Udaipur. If you've read my last blog, I expressed frustration to the fact that every train for weeks anywhere we want to go is 100% fully booked with no chance of getting on. Frusterated, we tried to change our flight to leave India early, but are finding it impossible to get ahold of Thai Airways in Mumbai, they seemd to change every phone number they have. **shrug** About a week ago we were able to get an overpriced train ticket on the black market from Ahmedabad to Mumbai (Bombay). Luckily in Udaipur we found out we could change our tickets to go from Ahmedabad to Jalgaon. This was welcoming to us because this means we don't have to go to Mumbai twice. ... read more

Ok, this one is for the architects, some of you may find this a little boring but finally I found some interesting buildings of international recognition (please note I am yet to visit the Taj), in the strangest most unexpected city as well. But before we get into the architecture talk, let's just recount the journey to our current destination, Ahmedabad. A grueling 16 and a half bus journey, and mind you not via highway, but the ‘short cut’ being the back end of no-where on a road that doesn’t even class as a dirt track. Now the buses we’ve been traveling on are sleeper coaches, meaning there actual beds on the bus, which is brilliant because you actually get to sleep lying down, far more comfortable than the reclining seats. Further the sleeper beds come ... read more

Xmas was a bit of a non event for us. No meat, no beer but all the curry that a man needs. We did a spot of shopping on our only day off, but apart from that was a pretty quiet day. The week following the conference was great. We could sleep in late, then arrive at school by 9, do a couple of lesson observations, feedback to the teachers about things that they could do better. We were expecting to have more time in the classroom with the children but unfortunately this didn't really occur. We took a couple more insets with various departments of the Raisan School and they were so pleased for us to be there, and welcomed anything that we suggested. As the school is still being built, there are over 500 ... read more

We arrived in Ahmedabad courtesy of Spice Jet - India’s answer to easy jet. We were met by a representative from the Mandir (temple) who is currently in India giving “Seva” or service to the faith. We were taken to one of the 48 Swaminarayan Temples in Ahmedabad, and this is where the current “Guru” or spiritual leader was staying at the time. We were lucky enough to get a room that had air-con, not that we ever used it. Temperatures were in the mid- twenties. That afternoon we visited the school at Raisan village. It is currently only open to Pre Primary and Primary children, and has 120 odd day boys attending at the moment. We met some of the teachers that would be taking part in the training days. Following day we began the ... read more

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Ahmedabad is not quite as polluted and hectic as I thought it was going to be, but it is non- stop and the pollution gets to you after a while. It doesn't look actually that thick as it can be in the new China where in parts they are not able to see their feet. Delhi is apparently the most polluted city in the world now. I went to Gandhi's ashram which was a reinforcement of my knowledge and feeling towards his courage & achievements. He still makes a strong presence in India in statues, on their currency and in the minds of the people. It was good to see the place that was (also in the film) where he set off on the famed march to Dandi to ... read more

Our original plan had been to take a Friday evening train out of Udaipur, arrive Ahmedabad at 4:35am, Saturday morning, visit all day; and depart for Mumbai at 10:35pm. Once we took a close look at this schedule, as we dined overlooking Lake Pichola, we knew this was a plan, like most plans, made to be changed. Thinking travelers do not show-up, at strange railway stations, at 4:35am, anywhere; pretty elementary. Instead, we hired a car and driver for a leisurely Friday excursion, through the dusky valleys of the brooding Aravalli Hills, on whose sloping sides grow miles of cactus thorns, serving as impediments to herds roaming the semi-arid land. In time, we broke free of the stony hills into more verdant pastures in eastern Gujarat, traveling a dual carriageway we shared with standing-room-only auto rickshaws, ... read more

After another night sleeping while traveling (this time 14hrs on a bus) I arrived here early in the morning. It's a random and typical Indian city which doesn't recieve many tourists. Apparently Mahatma Gandi's asram is here but I don't feel interested in that right now. I checked my backpack into the station locker room and headed for the city centre where there is a big open area that could loosely be called a park. When I arrived there was several cricket games being played and as I walked into the park I was quickly accosted by some bloke about my age who jumped off a moving bike and basically said 'I'm going to buy another cricket ball, when I get back you're playing so wait here'. A little confused I took a seat and went ... read more

We just left Mount Abu which was absolutely beautiful. It was peaceful and calm and pretty much hassle free. We did a trek yesterday for 12 km / 5 hrs around the mountain and through the nature reserve. We saw monkeys, wild boar and lots of birds and found out loads about the local area. Our guide Charles was great and even invited us back to his house for a drop of rum and to listen to his bad danish music and generic chart dance (Saturday Night by Whigfield!). But we realised if we stayed much longer then we wouldn't leave! It was quite strange being in Mount Abu mainly because its really a resort. Its kind of like Rhyl or Skeggy for Indian's. International Kite Festival, Ahmedabad ‘dheel de, dheel de de re bhaiya…’, the popular number from Bollywood’s basket aptly sums the excitement and thrill in the kite festivals held across the world, and delves into the Indianised face of the grand fiesta. The most renowned kite festival of India takes place at Ahmedabad on January 14 to coincide with uttarayan and Makar Sankranti. But it was as early as 200 bc, that Huen tsang of China flew a kite at night to scare the army of the Han dynasty. In the 930 Ad its Japan who first mentions ‘shiroshi’( meaning paper bird) which is considered to be the predecessor of the modern day Kite. China took it up as a popular sport between 960-1130 AD. China also attached some myth with the flying of kites and that ... read more
