Had to record an article in todays Herald Newspaper. Apparently Durex are seeking 1000 Indian volunteers to test their range of condoms. You must be over 18 and be prepared to complete a certain amount of sensitive paperwork. For this they will get free condoms and a hamper of goodies. Durex state that one of the problems is that the European condom is too big for the average Indian. You can imagine the stick we gave to the locals!!!... read more

The powers that be have decided to widen the roads. First of all lots of large rocks were dumped at the side of the road every 300m. Then about 20 men and women together with their babies and young children arrived. One group of men used sledge hammers to break up the rocks into smaller pieces, another group of men dug a channal about 3ft wide and 1ft deep at each side of the road. Another group of men loaded about 20kg of the broken rocks into large baskets which two men lifted onto the heads of the women, who took the rocks to the channals and dumped them in. They worked solidly from 9.00am to 6.00 pm in the fierce heat of the day for about 100 Rupees (about one pound 20 pence) Later on ... read more

Upon arrival in Mumbai, India, we were completely exhausted from our misadventure in Nairobi, Kenya obtaining our visas. Naturally, we were detained by immigration officials at the airport because our India visas were stamped in bold, red: "Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination required" upon entry. This was because yellow fever is common in Kenya, but it was difficult to explain that we were confined to our hotel for our stay in Kenya due to the civil war that was going on at the time. We faced a two-day quarantine at the airport. Diplomatic skills ensued, and begrudged entry was granted. Whew! Next, we changed our flight to the earliest possible flight from Mumbai to Goa. We needed to see a friend, and quick! Inge is a great friend of Renee's and now a good friend of ... read more

Well here we are in Goa - 60 seconds to get to the beach - hot sun, warm water (it really is at blood temperature) long sandy beach palm trees.......oh and little shacks where you can get drinks and food (even chip butties Carols favorite!). So we are really chilling out - New Years Eve was a blast - had dinner outside by the pool then wandered down to the beach - loads of fireworks and still around 25 degrees. We then walked back home on the beach whilst watching the little crabs running down into the water! It really is ace here and cheap food and drink. I hesitate to use the word idyllic but it gets very close. A very happy 2008 to everyone and hope it brings you everything that you could wish ... read more

Hi Linda et famille - and everyone else! - we've been incredibly slack and beset by more more issues than you could shake a skinny indian at! I had to have some minor surgery last week in a Catholic run hospital - general anaesthetic and all - absolutely shit miself but I have to say that the medical care was good - just a bit scary when the guy who'd just mopped the floor in my room then came to change my dressing!! This is just a quickie with no pictures just to let you all know I'm still alive and the stock of ridiculously funny stories is growing by the day. It's been a right rollercoaster so far as you I'm sure you would expect. I haven't even got around to telling the Kashmir tales ... read more

My last stop in ever-surprising India = the beach state of Goa! I wanted to have one more Indian destination, and also figured it would be a perfect time to start my diving certification, so that I could maximize my time underwater in the Maldives! I was very excited to meet my diving instructor at the airport upon arrival, when he rolled up on his skateboard with my open water instruction manual, I felt an instant bond and knew we would get along great! My first night in Goa, I headed straight for the first restaurant I saw advertising MEAT! I had to order the steak and french fries, and under the circumstances I have to say, it was the best steak ever! I was so happy to be back in the land of meat-eaters, as ... read more

Sheeby and his girlfriend picked us up from the guest house and we took them for dinner at a restaurant of their choice. Sheeby said this was "posh and cheap". We drove to Mapusa to the restaurant frequented by only the locals, which caused a stir on our arrival. Becs had been told many times throughout our trip that she looked like a Bollywood star (who's name unfortunately now escapes us) so inquisitive eyes peered all evening, but no autographs were given. The food was delcious and we had our first encounter of a Kashmirian Naan. This was a sweet and colourful side dish with an ecclectic mix of ingredients. Heres a few of the items included: coconut, peas, strawberry jam, glacier cherries, cashew nut and cheese. Gayle loved it, Becky didnt! Following dinner we headed ... read more
