Whilst being back home in the UK for three weeks I went for a wee break to Bonnie Edinburgh. Highlights include eating Battered Mars Bars, Afternoon Tea, The Castle and having Braveheart take us on a guided tour around Edinburgh. I stopped the night in Manchester at the Hill-Billy’s and in the morning after miss-judging the amount of time needed to catch public transport to Manchester airport, I made my check in with 15 minutes to spare. Ten more mins longer and in bed and I would have been writing this from Willenhall. I went through security, spent about 10 mins choosing a book and it was time to board the aircraft- 12 straight hours to Hong Kong. A semi full flight had meant that I had two seats to myself to put my feet up ... read more

Arrived at Hong Kong airport just before dusk so by the time we were on the coach being transferred to the hotel it was dark. Traffic was awful just like the coach driver, so we were glad to arrive at the hotel in one piece. The Grand Harbour Bay in Kowloon is definitely 5 star plus, large marble staircases and so many staff they keep tripping over each other. And another upgrade, this time to an executive Harbour view room on the top but one floor. Two whole walls are glass looking out over the harbour. Tremendous. This morning was an early start for the Hong Kong tour. We visited Aberdeen, the original hong kong village and took a ride in a sampan. The ride in the harbour amplified the vast divide between rich and poor ... read more

Hong Kong, what is there to say about Hong Kong that hasn't already been said? There are only three things to do in Hong Kong; Shop, Eat, and Drink lots. Sure you can do all those things, though I wouldn't say my budget is as high as many of the visitors there. For those who go into Hong Kong and only have that to say, I feel sorry for you. There is so much more to explore beyond the glitz and glamor of the high-end shopping that seem to attract all the visitors. To experience the real Hong Kong you have to get off the beaten path, although for a city of 7 million, compacted down to the size of a small city, there really is no “unbeaten path”. Please find yourself walking down the streets ... read more

The objective today was to visit the History Museum and .... it was so! It was not an early start! Mainly because I play around in the morning with my lovely new Asus Transformer Notebook downloading and organizing my pics. I did not make it out of the mini-room until after ten. Using the M.T.R. to get across to Kowloon was easy. Signage is clear, often repeated and without ambiguity. The specific exits are mentioned by A B C and so on sometimes going beyond K. Following the correct exit letter brought me directly to Cameron Road. From there I followed the directional arrows to the History Museum. Easy-Peasy. In no time I had made it over the Chatham Road via the walkway. Along this elevated path the directions were again clearly given. No way one ... read more

Day two in HK. Walked down to the pier and took Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour. Rush hour was over and very few people were on the boat. On the water was a small boat and on the boat was a man with a net at the end of a long pole. He was scooping up debris from the water. What an idea! I know of a few bodies of water that could make use of this simple method of ridding quais of stinking garbage! Once on the Kowloon side I went to the happy room at the golden arches. I must call these people. Usually the happy rooms at the arches are always very clean. Breakfast became an egg mcmuffin and coffee. The most important goal for today was to secure a ticket for the ... read more

Stepping off the train, Erin and I strained our necks as we looked up, up at the jungle that stretched its branches high into the hazy gray sky. We were immersed in smells and sounds, crowded by a beautiful yet dangerous world that could devour us in a heartbeat. The train rolled off behind us and we found ourselves isolated, but far from alone. Strange sounds encircled us and we looked in all directions, not sure which way to move; each way looked the same and extended as far as the eye could see... read more

Just arrived at the airport to fly to Australia and taking advantage of free, working wifi. It had better be sunny; the sun didn't put in a single appearance in Hong Kong! It's hard to describe what I thought of HK - I can't decide if I like it or not. First impressions as I caught the train from the airport were that it was very grey with poor visibility, but that the scenery also changed quickly from roads and concrete to greenery and mountains to container ships and the sea. They say it has very efficient public transport, and they are right. Not dissimilar to Singapore with the MRT. I mostly went everywhere on foot, although took the tram up to the peak to see the (still grey) views and caught the Star ferry from ... read more

Blog date 30th October. 28th Oct, last day in HK. After breakfast in Starbucks we decided to go underground!! We looked at it on our first day but it looked too busy but we decided we could not leave HK without trying out the Metro. As it turned out it was much easier than we thought. We purchased our tickets and boarded the train, very cheap and clean. No one is allowed to eat or drink on the Metro perhaps London should take note. After a quick change at Mong Kok we arrived at Diamond Hill metro station. They've only gone and built a shopping mall on top of the metro station! Following a quick visit to the shopping mall (not quick enough for Stuart) we visited Nan Lian Garden and Chi Lin Nunnery Buddhist Halls ... read more

It's about 1:30 pm now and we're having a rest in our hotel room after a morning of lots of walking. Also, I'm not feeling very well and needed a break. This morning we walked to the Star Ferry terminal with the intention of taking the ferry over to Central, and then taking the Central Big Bus tour (including taking the Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak). Because of road closures related to the protests, the Central Big Bus tour was not running again. Very disappointing. But we spoke to the Big Bus rep and found out we could walk to the Peak Tram from the Star Ferry terminal on the Central Side. So we took the ferry over (it's kind of like the seabus) and walked quite a long way to the Peak Tram terminal, ... read more
