Geo: 22.33, 114.18Well today was the final day, final day also for cramming more stuff into our already overloaded bags, we had until 12noon to be out of our room but Nikki decided that she still had things to buy, but most of the shops only opened at 11-11.30am which meant we were hanging around waiting. We had put our bags in the hotel storage so luckily we didn't have to drag the bags around. When the shops finally opened, the girls were happy with their bargains!!We collected our bags and caught the airport bus to Kowloon station where we could check our bags directly through Virgin Atlantic and check in, then we caught the airport express train straight to the airport. It was about 2.30pm and our flight wasn't until 7.10pm so the 3 girls ... read more

Geo: 22.3236, 114.173Today we have a little bit of a sleep in, like 8am, all got up and showered and could see it was going to be a beautiful day, sun was shining and there was only a little bit of smog. We set off for some shopping at about 10am, but a lot of the shops only open at 11am or 12noon as they stay open till midnight or just before. We decided to catch the underground to central on Hong Kong Island and with about 12 different exits, we took pot luck to where we would end up. We landed in an area which was Louis Voitton and Chanel, and all the expensive shops so we weren't really interested in staying around. We saw a sign for the Peak Tram and although we had ... read more

I walked all day today. I walked down to Victoria harbour from Tai Chi underground stop, I ate some local food (rice, two sausages and two slices of meat) and drank a lemon tea which actually was bitter. I went to the Art Museum which contained photos of HK, pottery, porcelain, ceramics and a few landscape paintings. I wasn't overly impressed but I did a pottery quiz to test different aspects of my personality and this took up most of my time. Afterwards, I walked around the whole of Kowloon park. It contained a mosque where lots of people were praying outside, it had lots of different mazes and gardens inside, it had playgrounds, lakes , fountains and lots of flamingos. Flamingos are the most beautiful ad elegant animals I've ever seen. From their colours to ... read more

EVENING I felt quite unwell after leaving the tea museum. I saw some caged orang-utans, and walked into the centre where I was overwhelmed by the amount of people on the streets. I hid in Mcdonalds for a while, went back to my hostel and had a nap. Mcdonalds has rescued me for the fourth time this trip, usually providing me with a big Mac or Filet of fish and fries. There I can eat safe in the knowledge that there is some hygiene standard and it gets me away from the noisy streets where I am constantly pushed around by busy people looking at their ipads, and not paying attention to anybody else. In fact in the evening I had a wonderful experience. I walked around to Causeway bay and along it past the ferry ... read more

This morning I walked along to Hong Kong park and the museum of teaware. I've been dying for a good cup of tea ever since I planned on going here one month ago... I walked along Causeway Bay and down the tram route on Hennessy Road. I didn't bother with the metro today as I wanted to get a real flavour of this city. Every time I come to a pedestrian crossing the crossing makes the relentless sound of somebody banging steel over and over with a hammer and only gives people enough time to dash across the road. Some days in the city the smog is so thick that you can't see far in front of you. I imagine this is what England was like in the Industrial Revolution. It is a requirement here that ... read more

Today I went to the National Museum of History of Hong Kong. It was so fascinating I spent four hours there with a break in between to eat in a Vietnamese restaurant (which took me ages with chopsticks.) The museum has seven sections. The three most interesting for me were The Folk Culture in Hong Kong, the Opium Wars and the Cession of Hong Kong; and Hong Kong under the Japanese Occupation and of course, it’s return to China from the British The Folk Culture In Hong Kong Most of the traditions stemmed from the fishing days, agriculture, and involved worshipping the Gods or killing off evil spirits. The most impressive Folk Tradition was that of The Seven Sisters Festival. On this day spinsters offer sacrifices to the Seven Sisters and pray for a good husband ... read more

I love going to the jade market. You can find jewelry of all kinds made with onyx, pearl, quartz, jade and maaaaaaaany more choices. Unlike the jewelry, the market is located in this giant shack so it's not very attractive but that's probably a good thing - so they won't attract too many attention. Bargaining is expected and necessary at the jade market. I've been away for so long that I'm not familiar with the value of a jade, pearl or whatever stones are out there but it's so much fun to learn about it. My mom goes to this one particular stall to buy their jewelry and the sellers are very helpful. People might say that the sellers are not to be trusted because they give ridiculous asking prices but the key is to build ... read more

Guten tag! I've been thinking about posting some of the following photos on here. I'm really not trying to portray Hong Kong as weird in their choice of food, snacks and markets. On the other hand, I realise (realize) it's only weird because some people have never encountered anything like it so if you are curious, please continue but I will warn you, contents might be disturbing... I went to a very traditional Chinese market, which is crowded and incredibly fascinating. I grew up going to these markets and always remembered being bored and irritated but now, I am just fascinated, grossed out and curious all together. We have our store-style mall where everything is packaged and laid out beautifully. And when I say everything is wrapped, everything is wrapped and packaged almost all individually. Vegetables ... read more

Merry Christmas! A lot of people have asked me how the locals celebrate Christmas in Hong Kong. Unlike the U.S., Christmas eve is a festive and loud event. For some reason, the locals love to count down in any major event. So on Christmas eve, thousands of people gathered together by the harbour to witness fireworks and count down till Christmas. Apparently, some people even dress in costume for the occasion. Some people hold parties at their home as well and exchange gifts. On Christmas day, the locals come out and shop. Just like how people in U.S. take the opportunity to drink on special events, people here take the opportunity to shop, shop and shop. And the amount of people are like swarms of bees on a mission and the lines to pay for your ... read more

Ni hao! It's a bright Monday morning and I am mostly awake with a hint of jet lag. It's good to be home but it's also been an interesting three and a half days - I didn't think I would be as overwhelmed with the crowds and such but apparently, I'm not as used to it. Nonetheless, it's still a good time and I've done quite a bit of sleeping and little bit of traveling including a wedding reception, lunch date with Winnie and Christmas party. I've also been eating none-stop! In addition to restaurants, there's a ton of street food and pastry stores and man do we love our pastries. Hong Kong is a city on the go and there is so much walking that it's incredibly convenient to have these stores lined up everywhere ... read more
